Chess is a complex (复杂的) game that takes a lot of thought, skill and strategy. Winning the title of "National Chess Master" is quite an honor, but it's an even greater achievement for a child to make—especially one that has lost half of his brain.

17-year-old Griffin McConnell recently won the title of National Chess Master after undergoing (经受) his fourth brain operation.

As a young child, Griffin was interested in chess. He started playing at just four years old and never stopped, even when faced with several terrible brain operations.

Griffin suffered from severe seizures (突然发作) that were affecting his quality of life, which is what prompted (促使) the brain operations in the first place. When they didn't seem to be effective enough, Griffin and his medical team made the decision to do a hemispherectomy (大脑半球切除术). During the risky hemispherectomy, doctors carefully removed around a quarter of the left side of Griffin's brain and separated the rest from the right half of his brain.

Griffin had to relearn how to walk and speak and do everything on his own again! It was a slow, painful journey and he never used his right arm and hand freely following the operation. However, one thing he picked back up pretty quickly after the hemispherectomy was chess.

Griffin said, "It's kind of interesting because I feel like chess is one part of me, and that's why I did so well. It's interesting because I wanted to relearn chess more than I wanted to walk or talk."

Despite the challenges Griffin faced, he went on to win one chess match after another. Recently, he even won the Colorado Scholastic Championship!

Looking at wind turbines (涡轮机), you might wonder, "Where does all the energy go?" You might think it's used immediately, or stored away until needed. However, the reality might surprise you. Because of being short of long-term storage choices, most energy from wind farms is lost. In

fact, during 2020, electricity that could have powered two million homes was wasted for this reason!

Wind power depends heavily on the weather. This causes problems when the wind isn't blowing. If the need for energy exceeds (低于) the supply of wind power electricity may be cut off. Conversely, power may be wasted when it cannot be stored over the long term.

Ocean Grazer, a Dutch company, is suggesting a new solution for this problem—an underwater storage system! Called the Ocean Battery (电池), this system's purpose is to collect and store electricity in an environmentally-friendly manner using a system of pumps (泵) and turbines.

During low demand (需求), the electricity from wind farms will pump water from underground pools into expandable bladders (囊状物) on the seafloor When power is needed, the water runs back down into the pools through a turbine, creating energy. This idea is similar to how hydroelectric (水力发电的) dams work.

What changes will the Ocean Battery bring? It can be used with solar farms, tidal energy farms, and any other off-shore electricity producers.

This new solution can have a 70%~80% efficiency (效率) rate, and since it can run a countless  number of cycles in its lifetime (around 20 years), it is cost-efficient and dependable. Its many-sided use as well as its high efficiency makes it a great way for energy storage! It can be used almost everywhere.

An example for the Ocean Battery is already being tested in the Netherlands and several other areas. Underwater storage of electricity causes greater challenges compared to storage on land, and we may see newer and more helpful designs as technology continues to advance.

    1. (1) According to Paragraph 1, the underlined part "the reality" refer to the fact that ________.
A . only a small part of the energy from wind farms is used B . wind power depends heavily on the weather C . problems happen when the wind isn't blowing D . wind power can't meet the demand for electricity
    2. (2) Which paragraphs show how the new solution works?
      A . Paragraphs 2 and 3. B . Paragraphs 3 and 4. C . Paragraphs 4 and 5. D . Paragraphs 5 and 6.
    3. (3) What does the writer think of the new solution in Paragraph 6?
      A . Expensive. B . Impossible. C . Hopeless. D . Useful.
    4. (4) The best title for the passage is "____________".
A . Wind power comes from windy weather B . More helpful designs continue to appear C . An underwater battery to store wind energy D . Most energy from wind farms wasted

Everyone is different and unique, thus everyone does not learn in the same way. Here is the question: Which is better, group studying or studying alone?

Studying alone allows you to set the perfect study environment so you get the most out of studying. It also allows you to use the most effective (有效的) learning methods. Some students learn best with flashcards while others learn best when they reread texts. Find your learning methods, and make your studying be the best results.

When you study alone, you're able to pay attention to exactly what you need to learn. It's easy to look over the things with which you're already comfortable and familiar.

When you set a date and time to get together with a study group, it stops you from procrastinating (拖延) because you know other people are counting on you to be there.

When you study in a group, you can remember more information. This is because you take your notes and put the information into your own words rather than reading from a textbook.  Moreover, it's very similar to teaching the others in your group, which leads to remembering the information better.

Being with other people allows you to get different ideas about the things. Sometimes someone can say just one sentence or word and it will all make sense.

    1. (1) Do people learn differently?
    2. (2) How do you avoid procrastinating?
    3. (3) What are the advantages of group studying from the passage?
    4. (4) Which one would you choose, group studying or studying alone? Why?
