When you and your friends turn to each other to talk about problems or trouble, you give each other advice and help. One important thing of our growth is to make decisions to help our friends and learn to support each other. This requires us to learn what it means to help friends and how to help them in right ways.

The first step toward helping others is to identify that they need help. We all know that difficulties are part of our daily lives. It's important to make sure when to help a friend. For example, you may pick up some signs that your friends are not acting like themselves. These signs show they may not be well. Of course, sometimes small things can lead to more serious problems that require more help, because you and your friends can't solve them. Then turning to a parent or a teacher is a good choice.

The next step toward helping others is to listen. Paying attention to others while listening is very important throughout our life. As listeners, we should try to understand what the speakers are feeling or experiencing and try to see things from their views. Listening and paying attention to others when they speak is a sign of respect and a skill.

The last step toward helping others is to give advice at a proper time. When we communicate with others, we need to learn when to speak and when not to. Sometimes being listened to is enough for your friends. They just want someone to understand them and listen to them. It' s not necessary for them to get any advice. If you have some advice, you should make sure that your friends really need it.

Following the tips above can lead to deeper and better relationships between you and your friends.

    1. (1) What does the underlined word "identify" in paragraph 2 mean?
      A . Require. B . Discover. C . Suggest. D . Remember.
    2. (2) What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A . Act as a good listener to your friends. B . Learn how to give advice to your friends. C . Pay attention to your friends' unusual acts. D . Build good relationships with your friends.
    3. (3) According to the writer, what should you do if your friends meet more serious problems you can't solve?
A . Keep the problems as secrets. B . Let them make their own decisions. C . Find out the causes of the problems. D . Get help from a trusted teacher.
    4. (4) What steps should we follow when we want to give our friends advice and help?

      a. listen to others    b. identify that they need help

      c. learn when to speak and when not to    d. build better relationships with friends

      A . a—b—c—d B . b—a—d—c C . b—a—c—d D . a—b—d—c
    5. (5) What is the purpose of the passage?
A . To discuss why people help each other. B . To describe the problems of giving help. C . To introduce the advantages of giving help. D . To explain how we can help others properly.
  • 34. (2023九下·吉林月考)  根据短文内容,判断正误。

Ancient poems, English words, historical events… you must have a lot to remember at school. What if you could have a good memory? Scientists have done a lot to find ways to improve our memories. Here are some tips based on their findings.

    Having an intense(剧烈的) workout

Scientists asked people to either ride a bike slowly for 90 minutes or do it really fast for 6 minutes. It showed that the short but intense exercise made the brain produce more of a chemical called "brain-derived neurotrophic factor( 脑源性神经营养因子)". This chemical helps people remember things quickly. Its amount(数量) goes to the highest point after six minutes of intense workout. That's the time when you should get down to remembering things!

    Sleeping in a rocking bed

When we were young, we slept soundly in our mom's swaying(摇晃的) arms. Scientists have found that if we sleep in a bed that gently sways back and forth, we can have a deeper sleep, which improves our memory as well. So maybe, you could buy a rocking bed.

    Becoming emotional(情绪激动的)

Emotions can have an influence on memories. The moment you become emotional, you can remember things really well. This is because the amygdala(杏仁核) in our brain is responsible for dealing with both emotions and memories. The brain wants us to remember what makes us so sad or happy. So next time you want to remember some knowledge, try to get yourself excited or angry. Then, just take out your book to learn new things!

    1. (1) The passage is about how to improve our memories.
    2. (2) The brain-derived neurotrophic factor is bad for our mind.
    3. (3) Sleeping in a bed that gently sways back and forth helps us have a deeper sleep.
    4. (4) Amygdala in our brain can only be in control of our memories.
    5. (5) When you are excited or angry, you can remember things more easily.
  • 35. (2023九下·吉林月考)  根据短文内容,把 A-E 五个句子填入文中空缺处,使短文意思通顺,内容完整。

A dictionary is very useful for the people who are learning English. People will use a dictionary for help when they have difficulties in reading a passage or doing English exercises. You will make more

progress if you know how to use a dictionary efficiently.

You should choose a suitable dictionary. You can choose a dictionary which is suitable for your English level, needs and interests. For a middle school student in Grade 9, you can choose OXFORD INTERMEDIATE LEARNER'S ENGLISH—CHINESE DICTIONARY.

You may have had such an experience when you are reading a passage: there are some new words in it and you have difficulties in understanding the full passage. What will you do in this situation? I think you should guess the meaning before you use your dictionary.

And you don't just learn a new word's pronunciation, meaning, part of speech and other usages.

A dictionary is a good friend for learning English. It's a waste for you not to use a dictionary in your study. But don't think the more you use a dictionary, the better result you can get. If you can do as I have told you, I think you will improve your English soon.

    A. Here are some ideas on how to use it.

    B. Try to guess the meaning of a new word.

    C. You should use your dictionary in a right way.

    D. You can learn some cultural knowledge from a dictionary as well.

    E. Choosing a good dictionary is very important for an English learner.

Since the age of 5,Laura Lee has had a strange habit—she collects cardboard toilet paper rolls( 厕所卷纸筒). She didn't know this habit would one day become a recycling movement.

In 2018,Lee set up a goal to collect 1,000 kilograms of these rolls. She was then a 16-year-old student at Nanyang Girls' High School in Singapore. On February 2021. she collected 860 kg. She received an Ecofriend Award from the Singapore government.

Why did she choose toilet rolls? "They are convenient to collect and also one of the purest forms of waste to recycle because they are made of only one material," Lee told Singapore Today. "It's more difficult to recycle pens because they are made up of too many different materials like rubber casings, metals and plastics, which require more resources to separate. "

Lee went into a partnership with the. waste management firm Veolia. The firm gave her money for every kilogram of toilet rolls.

She organized "toilet roll challenges" in her school and worked with cleaners to collect used toilet rolls. She gave speeches about what she was doing at local schools. She also raises awareness(意识) about different social groups through her Instagram Live series, "On A Roll".

One big challenge Lee faces is others doubting her because of her young age. "I always have to use my actions to prove that I know about this and I can do it well," she said. She will give away the money collected to a social group on community health.

    1. (1) When did Laura Lee set up the goal to collect lots of toilet rolls?
    2. (2) According to Laura Lee, which is easier to recycle, toilet rolls or pens?
    3. (3) Where did Laura Lee organize "toilet roll challenges"?
    4. (4) What will she do with the money collected?
    5. (5) How do you like Laura Lee?
