Families are taking down their decorations and throwing out their trees when Christmas has come to an end. However, one man in Texas is reusing the trees for a good cause. Canes (拐杖) for Veterans (退伍军人) Central Texas, which was set up by Jamie Willis, makes free canes out of waste wood for veterans in need. Willis started the organization when he found himself in need of a strong cane, he told CBS News.

Jamie Willis had served in the army for eight years, but was left disabled. He would use a cane to get around, but didn't like the one he received from Veterans Affairs. He decided to ask for a suitable replacement (替代品) from the organization Free Canes for Veterans. Oscar Morris, who ran the organization, apologized to Willis because they were all handed out.

He then considered making one for himself. Luckily, with the help of Morris, Willis made his first cane. Morris encouraged him to make another cane for someone else in need, which gave Willis an idea. He started the Canes for Veterans Central Texas.

During its first year, Willis simply collected thrown-away trees and wood. Now, after getting some attention, Willis has received many donated Christmas trees from neighbors and natives. Since 2016, Willis and his team have made 222 canes for veterans in need. He's even started to make the canes with slogans (标语) and designs chosen by the veterans, making each one meaningful to those veterans.

"It's a great feeling,"he told CBS News. "It takes their eyes off their so-called disability and it takes their eye to the cane. Because when people look at a person with just a metal cane, everyone just wonders what happens,"Willis added. "But now, when they're walking around with canes that we make, they're looking at the cane, a piece of artwork. "

    1. (1) Why did Jamie Willis finally decide to make himself a cane?
A . He liked the cane with a slogan. B . The cane he received was out of date. C . He failed to apply for a satisfying cane. D . The canes in stores were too expensive.
    2. (2) What made Willis start his organization?
      A . His own hobby. B . Recycling enough Christmas trees. C . Public support. D . Morris' encouragement.
    3. (3) What is the local people's attitude to Willis' behavior?
      A . Supportive. B . Unclear. C . Disapproving. D . Doubtful.
    4. (4) What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A . Willis' canes are designed to attract public attention. B . Willis' canes help reduce mental stress of the disabled. C . People like Willis' canes more than the metal canes. D . People respect the disabled more with Willis' canes.

Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, highest and driest continent on the planet. The lowest temperature ever recorded on Earth was -94. 7℃in eastern Antarctica in 2010. The continent experiences regular Katabatic winds, reaching 300 km per hour. There is little rainfall and the air is very dry. Indeed, the Polar Plateau (极地高原) is regarded as a desert which experiences similar rainfall levels to the Sahara Desert.

It is the fifth-largest continent and is almost 1. 5 times the size of the United States. Its coastline covers about 18,000 km. About 98% of the continent is covered in a thick continental ice sheet and the remaining 2% is rock.

Antarctica has six months of daylight followed by six months of darkness. It contains 70% of the planet's freshwater and 90% of the world's ice.

Strong winds and wild storm shave been closely connected with Antarctica since its discovery and continue to be a main challenge for modern explorers. Most of the early diaries and tales of exploration of Antarctica are filled with stories of how the weather was man's biggest enemy on the continent. Nature's power is seldom seen as ferocious as it is in Antarctica' making it one of the most difficult places to live on Earth.

Robert, Scott's British expedition reached 90 South but all members unluckily died on their return journey. But prior to that expedition, the Norwegian-led expedition of Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole on December 14,1911, which was unprecedented.

Before this, the thought over the existence of a "southern land"was not confirmed until the early 1820s. At this time, British and American business operators and British and Russian national expeditions began exploring the Antarctic Peninsula area and other areas south of the Antarctic Circle. In 1840, it was believed that Antarctica is indeed a continent and not just a group of islands.

    1. (1) What can we know about Antarctica from paragraph 1?
A . It is covered by sand. B . The air there is wet. C . It hardly rains there. D . The average temperature there was high.
    2. (2) What does the underlined word "ferocious"mean in paragraph 4?
      A . Strong. B . Gentle. C . Common. D . Amazing.
    3. (3) Which expedition first arrived at the South Pole?
      A . British. B . Norwegian. C . American. D . Russian.
    4. (4) Which is the most suitable title for the text?
      A . Antarctica: A Dream Place B . Antarctica: A Plateau C . Antarctica: A Challenging Place D . Antarctica: Expedition's New Goal

It's easy to believe that robots are stealing jobs from human workers and badly affect the job market; after all, you've likely heard that they are tracking and moving packages without the use of human hands.

But there's no need to worry about a robot takeover just yet, says a new study from BYU sociology professor Eric Dahlin. Dahlin's research found that robots aren't replacing (取代) humans at the rate most people think, but people are likely to greatly exaggerate (夸大) the rate of robot takeover.

To understand the relationship between job loss and robots, Dahlin surveyed nearly 2, 000 people about their views on jobs being replaced by robots. They were first asked to guess what is the percentage of employees whose employers have replaced jobs with robots. They were then asked whether their employers have ever replaced their jobs with robots.

The study found that only 14% of workers say they've seen their job replaced by a robot. But those who have experienced job displacement due to a robot overstate the effect of robots taking jobs from humans by about three times.

"Our understanding of robots taking over jobs is greatly exaggerated," says Dahlin. Those who haven't lost jobs overstate it by about double, and those who have lost jobs overstate it by about three times. Eye-catching headlines saying a bad future of employment have likely overblown the situation of robots taking over jobs.

The finding fits early studies, which suggest that robots aren't replacing workers. Rather, workplaces, where both employees and robots are working together, deliver more value in a way. "An everyday example is an autonomous machine at your local department store,"says Dahlin. "This robot cleans the floors while employees clean under shelves or other difficult-to-reach places. "

    1. (1) How did Eric Dahlin carry out his research?
A . By asking people questions. B . By comparing early studies. C . By interviewing employers. D . By studying new businesses.
    2. (2) What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A . Bad effects of technology. B . A fall in jobless workers. C . Benefits of using robots. D . The finding of the study.
    3. (3) What might deepen people's worry about robot takeover according to the text?
      A . Low pay. B . News reports. C . Physical health. D . Fewer workplaces.
    4. (4) Which statement will Eric Dahlin probably agree with?
A . Robots can work as human partners. B . Job markets will be affected seriously. C . All human workers will be replaced. D . Work experience matters too much.

3 Ways to Create an Exercise Habit

A lot of people want to know how to get motivated to work out and build an exercise habit that sticks. Of course, wanting to make exercise a habit and actually doing it are two different things. Changing your behavior is difficult. . But there are some strategies that can make it easier to stick with an exercise habit.

    • Develop a routine to make starting easier.

. That means they are also behaviors that you start over and over again. If you can develop a routine that makes starting your workout mindless and automatic, then it will be much easier to follow through. You can start building your own routine by adding your exercise habit on top of a current habit or by setting a schedule for yourself.

    •

The best way to make exercise a habit is to start with an exercise that is so easy that you can do it even when you can't get motivated to work out. Struggling to find motivation to go for a run? . That's all you have to do to consider today's workout a success. Often, this little start will be enough to get your motivation flowing and help you finish the task.

    • Focus on the habit first and the results later.

. Most people start with some type of goal. "I want to lose 20 pounds in the next 4 months. "Or,"I want to squat(蹲举) 50 pounds more six months from now. "This is the wrong approach. What matters most in the beginning is establishing a new normal that you will stick to, not the results that you get.

    A. Living a new type of lifestyle is hard.

    B. Start with an exercise that is very small.

    C. Never work out while you are running low on willpower.

    D. Habits are behaviors that you repeat over and over again.

    E. Just fill up your water bottle and put on your running shoes.

    F. If you don't consistently get started, then you won't have a habit.

    G. The typical approach to diet and exercise is to focus on results first.

Chuck and his elder brother Peter lived with their dad Kyle and their grandfather Stan. They referred to each other as "the Hardy boys. "

One evening, Chuck and Peter asked their grandfather about the number one activity on his bucket list(人生愿望清单). "I was going to rebuild my dad's farmhouse and maintain it. It's a shame I could never do it,"he sighed(叹息). Stan worked hard as a car mechanic, but his earnings were never enough to maintain such a huge farm.

Months passed and there was no mention of the farm again. Stan and Kyle continued working in their car repair shop, while Chuck and Peter worked downtown. On Stan's 75th birthday, Chuck and Peter decided to give him a surprise.

"Grandpa," Chuck started, "this year we decided not to give you a cake for your birthday. " He smiled. "Really? You broke your years-long tradition of giving me a chocolate cake?! How could you?!" Stan joked. "Ah, wait and see, Grandpa. I think you're going to like this a lot better than a chocolate cake," Chuck replied.

At that moment, Peter excitedly brought out his laptop and flashed a 3D model of a modern farmhouse. Kyle and Stan stared at the computer screen. "What are we looking at?" Stan asked his grandsons. "We know how much your dad valued his farm and how much you wanted to honor him by maintaining it. Chuck and I raised money to fix the farmhouse and the farm, "Peter said with a smile.

Stan covered his mouth with his hand. Tears instantly streamed down his face. "You'd do that for me?"he cried. "Grandpa, you're the best grandfather on earth," Chuck told him. "Wed do absolutely anything for you. There's nothing else you need to say but to assure us that you'll help us rebuild the farm, Grandpa! You too, Dad!"

Kyle and Stan nodded their heads. " Absolutely. When we're done, I'll throw a barbecue party! My dad said that if I ever get to maintain the farm, we should throw a barbecue party, " Stan said excitedly.
