  • 14. (2023高一下·奉贤期末)  After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

The dangers of sitting all day are obvious. Researchers have shown that remaining sitting for extended periods of time, like at your 9-to-5 desk job,do harm to your health. Although exercise is a big part of reducing the harmful effects of sitting, it was unclear how many gym periods were needed (help) until now.

A new study, (publish) in The Lancet, shows the ideal formula for reducing the negative effects of a sedentary(久坐的) job. Instead of a fixed number of hours spent exercising, the ratio (比率) depends on how much you sit: people  work a typical eight-hour day should spend at least one hour each day moving. If you sit six hours a day, you should spend half an hour exercising. The research also gives the indication  the exercise doesn't have to be all once or too strict. It can be spread throughout the day and be as simple as walking.

The team behind the study analyzed data from a pool of a million adults over the age of 45 in Western Europe, the United States and Australia. (use) previous data, the researchers examined data, from 16 published studies and used it to determine how much exercise(require) to compensate for sitting. Their recommended daily exercise goal is  (high) than previous advice but not necessarily less achievable, so long as it can be completed throughout the day.

(fit) in an hour of exercise a day sounds especially discouraging if you have a desk job, but there are plenty of exercises you can complete before and after work.it means taking a 10-minute walk during lunch, your body will thank you in the long run.

    Communal Eating?

In China, communal eating (合餐共食) is considered very important for forming a close relationship. In the memories of most Chinese, one of the happiest moments in their lives was seated around a table with families or friends,dishes and chatting over wine.

In the campaign against the COVID-19 outbreak, this dining tradition has been greatly . Since each diner picks food out of the communal plates on a bite-by-bite basis with their chopsticks, the virus can be transferred from saliva (唾液) to chopsticks to the dish. What's worse, diners often others with their own utensils, such as chopsticks or spoons, to express friendliness and care. Several cases of coronavirus are thought to have through families when sharing food during the Chinese New Year period.

Communal eating has thus become a target of both governments and restaurants. Posters have been by local governments to encourage people to use serving utensils. Concerned about customers being very careful about returning to restaurants, the catering industry (餐饮业) has  joined the campaign. For example, many restaurants, once allowed to reopen, have immediately sprung into action, particularly offering set meals for one single person.

These changes are likely to continue and could be encouraged by local regulations, as eating together  can always protect the public health. The measures will  the traditional mealtime manners.

The move away from a traditional cultural is ongoing. But as an expert said, "In modern times to eat individually may lose some tradition, but it can also mean more opportunities forsomething new in Chinese food and eating habits."

六、Reading Comprehension(34’)
  • 20. (2023高一下·奉贤期末)  Read the following two passages. Each passage is followed by several questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

I was grocery shopping recently in my hometown, N.Y., when I heard a young voice rise. "Mom, come here, you've gotten see this! There's this lady here my size!"

The mother was mortified and rushed to a boy she called Mikey, who looked to be about seven; then she turned to me to apologize. "Oh, I'm so sorry."

I smiled and told her, "It's okay." Then I looked at her wide-eyed son and said, "Hi, Mikey, I'm Darryl Kramer. How are you?"

He studied me from head to toe, and asked, "Are you a little mommy?" "Yes, I have a son," I answered.

"Why are you so little?" he asked.

"It's the way I was made." I said.

It takes only one glance to see my uniqueness. I stand three feet, nine inches tall. I am an achondroplasia dwarf (软骨发育不全的侏儒). Like most achondroplasia dwarfs, I have two average-height parents, as well as an average-height brother. When I was born, my mother was told in the hospital that I was a dwarf. Not knowing a lot about dwarfism, my mom's main concern was my health. Our family doctor put her mind at ease when he told her he felt I would not have any major medical concerns. He was right.

When I was growing up, my parents encouraged me to do all the things the kids around me did. So when my neighbors got two-wheel bikes, I got a two-wheel bike. When they roller-skated, I roller-skated. I didn't see anything different in my parents' eyes about me. Why should I look at myself differently? Therefore, I just tried to smile and accept the fact that I was going to be noticed my whole life. I was determined to make my uniqueness an advantage rather than a disadvantage. And when I accepted myself as I was, life wasn't that difficult after all. Most people around me were friendly and protective.

I'm 47 now, and it's the children's questions that make my life special. "Why are you so short? How old are you? Are you a mommy?" When I talk with children, they leave content that their questions have been answered. My hope is that in taking time with them, I will encourage them to accept their peers, whatever size and shape they come in, to know that every human deserves due respect.

    1. (1) The underlined word mortified is closest in meaning to____.
      A . angry B . ashamed C . interested D . grateful
    2. (2) What made the author accept her physical uniqueness?
A . That she almost died at birth. B . That her parents loved her more than her ordinary-sized brother. C . That her parents treated her as an ordinary person. D . That all the people around her were protective and kind.
    3. (3) Why is the author patient with children's questions?
A . Because she wants to tell them about the rare disease. B . Because she notices that children are usually kinder than adults. C . Because she also has a child and wants to be a loving mum. D . Because she expects them to respect every human.

    Living History

Hillary Rodham Clinton is known to hundreds of millions of people around the world. Yet few beyond her close friends and family have ever heard her account of her extraordinary journey. She writes with humor and passion about her upbringing in suburban and her transformation from Goldwater Girl to controversial First Lady.

    Thinking, Fast and Slow

    Diary of a Wimpy Kid

The authorities are closing in, but when a surprise storm hits, the Heffley family is trapped indoors. Greg knows that when the snow melts he's going to have to face the music, but could any punishment be worse than being stuck inside with your family for the holiday?

The 2012 London Olympics had enough problems to worry about. But one more has just been added — a communications blackout caused by solar storms.

After a period of calm within the Sun, scientists have detected the signs of a flesh cycle of sunspots that could peak in 2012, just in time for the arrival of the Olympic torch in London.

Now scientists believe that this peak could result in vast solar explosions that could throw billions of tons of charged matter towards the Earth, causing strong solar storms that could jam the telecommunications satellites and interact links sending five Olympic broadcast from London.

"The Sun's activity has a strong influence on the Earth. The Olympics could be in the middle of the next solar maximum which could affect the functions of communications satellites," said Professor Richard Harrison, head of space physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire.

At the peak of the cycle, violent outbursts called coronal mass ejections occur in the Sun's atmosphere, throwing out great quantities of electrically-charged matter. "A coronal mass ejection can carry a billion tons of solar material into space at over a million kilometres per hour. Such events can expose astronauts to a deadly amount, can disable satellites, cause power failures on Earth and disturb communications," Professor Harrison added. The risk is greatest during a solar maximum when there is the greatest number of sunspots.

Next week in America, NASA is scheduled to launch a satellite for monitoring solar activity called the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which will take images of the Sun that are 10 times clearer than the most advanced televisions available.

The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory helped to make the high-tech cameras that will capture images of the solar flares and explosions as they occur.

Professor Richard Hold away, the lab's director, said that the SDO should be able to provide early warning of a solar flare or explosion big enough to affect satellite communications on Earth. "If we have advance warning, we'll be able to reduce the damage. What you don't want is things switching off for a week with no idea of what's caused the problem," he said.

    1. (1) The phrase "communications blackout" in paragraph 1 most probably refers to____during the 2012 Olympics.

    A. If you are going to follow someone, focus on their talent, not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors.

    B. In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously hold poor role models.

    C. Creative people have an endless resource of ideas.

    D. I was very proud of myself.

    E. But soon I grew bored.

    F. Study your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not serve.

Blind imitation is self-destruction. To those who do not recognize their unique worth, imitation appears attractive; to those who know their strength, imitation is unacceptable. In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful. When I first learned to cook, I used recipes and turned out some tasty dishes. Why follow someone else's way of cooking when I could create my own? Imitating role models is like using training wheels on a child's bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying on them.

If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did. If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results of the weak choices of others.

In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off screen, their personal lives may be disastrous.

Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique. Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, not desperation. The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them. The problem a creator faces is not running out of material; it is what to do with the material knocking at the door of imagination.
