"Good morning, " the new teacher said. "I'm Ernesto Flores, your teacher for fifth grade. " In all his years in school, Julio had never heard a teacher use his or her first name. Of course, the students always found out what they were, but it was up to the students to discover this information for themselves.
"Now I'd like to find out who you are, " said Mr. Flores. He began to call the roll (点名), starting with the boys. Julio shook his head. Teachers always began with the girls.
"Julio Sanchez, " called Mr. Flores, pronouncing it Hulio. That was the correct way to say the name in Spanish.
Several kids laughed. They had never heard Julio's name pronounced without the J. Mr. Flores looked up from the roll book. "Isn't that how you say your name?" he asked Julio. "Or do you prefer Julio with a J?"
"At home, they call me Hulio. But at school everyone calls me Julio, " Julio said.
"Do you like two pronunciations of your name?" asked the teacher. "It's a good Spanish name and you should be proud of it. "
Julio smiled. "I know, " he said, "but it doesn't matter to me. "
"Are you sure?" asked Mr. Flores. "Your name is a very important part of you. "
Julio thought for a moment. "Okay, " he said. "From now on, everyone please call me Hulio. Puerto Rico, where I was born, used to be a Spanish colony (殖民地). "
"That's right, " said Mr. Flores. "Can you tell us something about Puerto Rico?"
"I came here when I was only eight months old. I don't remember anything, " Julio replied.
"I think you can interview your parents instead, " Mr. Flores said.
Julio nodded. It would be fun to learn more about the place where he had been born.
Julio had to admit (承认) that Mr. Flores was creative and interesting.
Since the outbreak of COVID19 in early 2020, public health and government officials have put social distancing rules in place and advised people to stay at home as much as possible. Many schools around the world started online learning.
Do teenagers have it easy being home all the time? Not necessarily. They can't connect with teachers and friends in person and do outdoor activities. They are even concerned about the deadly disease. These have caused a rise in anxiety among young people.
In a study of about 1, 500 teens last spring, 70% kids said that they were struggling with anxiety and 45% had felt more stressed than usual. Poncin, a professor of clinical child psychiatry (精神病学), said that it's difficult to show exactly what is causing the increased stress. Some factors focus on our communities and families, while others are individual (个别的). "There are many stress factors that teens are worried about, like their parents losing jobs, family members getting sick, parents not being home, not talking with friends, and more, " Poncin said. "Teens need to learn how to be together and how to talk and be with people. "
Thinking about something over and over also builds stress. To help ease (缓解) their worries, teens can bike, walk the dog or even pick up a new hobby.
In my home state of North Carolina, Roy Goode, head of the local educational agency, is especially concerned about students who don't have the resources they need to learn at home. "Today's students are tomorrow's leaders, " he said. "We need to make sure they all have a chance to succeed so we can overcome any challenge that comes our way. "
How to Deal with Your Homework
Write it down.
Make a note on your notebook. Always remember to write down any homework for school so you won't forget anything.
Create a homework station.
Find somewhere comfortable and quiet to work. It will take twice as long to get the homework done. Shut off your cell phone, power off your computer and close the door.
Do it as early as possible.
Don't leave homework to the last minute. The earlier you start your homework, the sooner you will finish!
Do all your homework as early as you can. Then you won't have a pile of (一堆) homework the next day.
Think about how long it will take you to finish each homework subject. For example: English—ten minutes, science—ten minutes, math—forty minutes, Chinese—twenty minutes, etc.
Relax yourself.
You can easily get tired by sitting through an hour or two of homework without stopping. Once you finish homework for a subject, take a small break. Just make sure it's quick(no more than 15 minutes). Do not turn on the cell phone, or you'll never go back and finish your homework.
A. Use your time in a proper way.
B. Start as soon as you get home.
C. Start with your hardest homework.
D. Never do your homework in front of the TV.
E. You can take a walk or find something to eat.
F. After short breaks, return to finish up the rest of your work.
G. Keep a homework notebook where you record all your homework.
Dear Seth,
You are only three years old, and at this point in your life you are not able to understand this letter. But some day when you 1 , I hope you will find something 2 in what I am going to share with you.
Life can be 3 . There will be people in your life who won't be very nice. They'll 4 you because you are different, or for no good reason. You will also face heartbreak and might be 5 by those you love. I hope you don't have to face these too much, but such things happen.
Be open to life anyway. You'll find cruelty(残忍) and 6 in your journey through life, but don't let that 7 you from finding new things. Don't retreat(退却)from life, and don't hide or wall yourself off(把自己隔离). Be open to new things, new experiences, and new people. You will 8 many times, but if you allow that to stop you from trying, you will 9 many chances. Do remember failure is a stepping stone to10 .
You will meet many people who will try to do 11 than you, in school, in college, and at work. They'll try to have nicer cars, bigger houses, nicer clothes, and so on. To them, life is a competition. However, I believe life is a 12 . If you always try your best to 13 others, you are wasting your life. Learn to enjoy your life instead and you will make it a journey of 14 , of learning and of love.
Finally, know that I love you and always will. You are 15 a really wonderful journey, and I will always be there for you.
Love,
Dad
In my hometown there's a river. After school, many(student) went there and swam, but my parents didn't allow me to swim there. One reason was that almost every year one or two people died in the river and the second was that I was very thin and weak. My parents (worry) about me.
One afternoon, I didn't have class; my friends and I went outside to play. We went to the river and they swam there; they (be) very happy. I stood on the bank. I really wanted to swim, but I was afraid. At that moment one friend smiled and (persuade) me, "The river is shallow. You can swim here and I can teach you. " I walked down to the river and she taught me. After half hour she said, You practice here. I want to swim for a while. I practiced (happy) again and again. When I stood up, I felt the water was deep and I sank in the water. Suddenly a hand caught me. It was one of (I) friends.
I went home but I didn't tell my parents. Soon my parents knew that event, which made them very(anger). My father has a friend, knew that thing and told my father, " Your daughter is so thin, and she needs to do exercise. I can teach her (swim). " Dad thought he was right and allowed me to swim. Therefore I could swim every day.
Bob and I hung out the whole summer, running in the field, swimming in the lake and exploring everywhere joyfully.
It was a typical summer afternoon. Bob suggested we skip a language lesson to play basketball. Aha! I would show my defense, lay-ups and three-point shooting. I loved to explore, I loved sports, and I loved basketball most. I believed I would be the next LeBron James.
But my passion for sports came to a sudden stop when I began experiencing extreme back pain later that day.
After several visits to doctors, finally I was told that a spine (脊柱) surgery was necessary. Unfortunately, the surgery accidentally damaged my spinal cord (脊髓). I was in the ward hanging face down to relieve the pressure on my spine.
After four-month rehabilitation training (康复训练) in hospital, reality slowly set in – I was unable to walk again. I couldn't believe this should have happened to me, that it wasn't possible to recover, that I wouldn't become a famous basketball player, that my life as I had known it, was over. My future would be chained to a wheelchair. I was just 16 years old!
Back home, I learned how hard it was going to be to get around in a wheelchair. I withdrew from my friends and my basketball. At Bob's repeated invitation, I agreed to go to our regular swimming hole. Unable to make it down the riverbank alone, I was too proud to ask for help. When I finally realized my pride would keep me away from people and sports I loved, I let Bob carry me on his back to the river's edge.
Allowing others to help was a turning point. I realized my attitude was the biggest barrier I had to face. How could I expect others to see my potential if I didn't see it myself? How could I realize my basketball dream if I withdrew into myself?
Paragraph1:One day, Bob took me to a wheelchair basketball game.
Paragraph2:With Bob's encouragement, I decided to have a try at my dream.
