The days of elderly women doing nothing but cooking huge meals on holidays are gone. Enter the Red Hat Society -a group holding the belief that old ladies should have fun.

"My grandmothers didn't do anything but keep house and serve everybody. They were programmed to do that," said Emils Comette, head of a chapter of the 7-year-old Red Hat Society.

While men have long spent their time fishing and playing golf, women have sometimes seemed to become unnoticed as they age. But the generation now turning 50 is the baby boomers (生育高峰期出生的人), and the same people who refused their parents' way of being young are now trying a new way of growing old.

If you take into consideration feminism (女权主义), a bit of spare money, and better health for most elderly, the Red Hat Society looks almost inevitable(必然的). In this society, women over 50 wear red hats and purple (紫色的) clothes, while the women under 50 wear pink hats and light purple clothing.

"The organization took the idea from a poem by Jenny Joseph that begins: "When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple. With a red hat which doesn't go," said Ellen Cooper, who founded the Red Hat Society in 1998. When the ladies started to wear the red hats, they attracted lots of attention.

"The point of this is that we need a rest from always doing something for someone else," Cooper said. "Women feel so ashamed and sorry when they do something for themselves. " This is why chapters are discouraged from raising money or doing anything useful. "We're a ladies' play group. It couldn't be more simple," added Cooper's assistant Joe Heywood.

    1. (1) The underlined word "chapter" in paragraph 2 means____.
      A . one branch of an organization B . a written agreement of a club C . one part of a collection of poems D . a period in a society's history
    2. (2) From the text, we know that the "baby boomers" are a group of people who
A . have gradually become more noticeable B . are worried about getting old too quickly C . are enjoying a good life with plenty of money to spend D . tried living a different life from their parents when they were young
    3. (3) It could be inferred from the text that members of the Red Hat Society are____.
A . interested in raising money for social work B . programmers who can plan well for their future C . believers in equality between men and women D . good at cooking big meals and taking care of others
    4. (4) Who set up the Red Hat Society?
      A . Emily Cornette. B . Ellen Cooper. C . Jenny Joseph. D . Joe Heywood.
    5. (5) Women join the Red Hat Society because____.
A . they want to stay young B . they would like to appear more attractive C . they would like to have fun and live for themselves D . they want to be more like their parents

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.

The total amount of packaging(外包装)has increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household's waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.

Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for burying(埋)this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Besides, the plastic from the package puts some creatures in danger, especially birds and fish.

Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it is also applied to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary materials are collected. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

    1. (1) What does the underlined phrase "that over-consumption" refer to?
A . Using too much packaging. B . Recycling too many wastes. C . Having more material than is needed. D . Making more products than necessary.
    2. (2) The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show____.
A . the tendency of cutting household waste B . the increase of packaging recycling C . the rapid growth of supermarkets D . the fact of packaging overuse
    3. (3) According to the text, which of the following is true about recycling?
A . It leads to a waste of land. B . It means burning packaging for energy. C . It helps control the greenhouse effect. D . It is the solution to gas shortage.
    4. (4) What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A . Unpackaged products are of bad quality. B . It is wrong to judge quality only by packaging. C . Supermarkets care more about packaging. D . Other products are better packaged than food.
    5. (5) What does the writer tell us in the last paragraph?
A . Fighting wastefulness is difficult. B . People don't waste any more. C . People only recycle necessary goods now. D . We should continue our consumer culture.
六、阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
  • 28. (2023·) 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

My father is a truck driver, and has been transporting scrap metals (废金属) and other dangerous materials. Someone has to move these things, and I am glad it's someone as reliable as my dad.

One evening my father brought my brother and me to collect my mother. We arrived and were waiting in the truck when my father smelled something. Smoke came from a house, a block behind us. He quickly drove around to the house. The smoke was obvious, and we saw fire when he opened the door and went inside. He came out with a woman and rushed back in for her children. He didn't stop until all the children were out. When the firemen arrived, we went back to get my mother. My father didn't even mention it to mom.

Once in the scrap metals he found a gold nursing pin, a badge (徽章) given to nurses when they graduate. This one had an initial and last name, and a date in the early 1920s. Dad researched and learned that the rightful owner was now in a nursing home several hundred miles away.

The next Sunday he drove to see her. She was ecstatic. The pin had been lost for over 50 years. The woman asked my father how much he wanted for the pin and he refused any reward. But the woman became upset when he accepted nothing, so he compromised by accepting gas money for the trip, though I am sure that he didn't tell her how much the drive actually cost.

Any one of these events makes my dad hero, but he never stops. I've learned from him that being a hero means doing whatever you can whenever you can.
