This was the fourth time this year that Lin had been the new kid in school-all because her mother's job kept them moving. Lin's mother had decided 1 here from December. But Lin didn't care about it. For Lin, making new friends was a waste of time. She would 2 no more clubs. She would also add no new names to her phone list.
On her 3 day, the teacher Mrs. Leonard welcomed her in the class and asked a student to help her find her way around. This time, it was a girl named Marley, Carly, or something. Lin had stopped 4 attention to what the kids' names were. Lin knew that she would forget them all, just as 5 kids from all those other schools had probably forgotten her. 6 Mrs. Leonard was giving Lin textbooks, Lin made her decision. She thought that at this school, she would be 7 remembered.
The next day, Tuesday, instead of wearing the usual jeans and T-shirt, she dressed 8 in a pair of bloomers (灯笼裤) bought from an old Halloween clothes store. She also didn't comb her hair. On Wednesday, she wore 9 old dress of her mother's, along with soccer cleats (钉鞋). "At least they'll remember me after we've moved away. " she thought on Thursday as she put 10 a beautiful skirt and a T-shirt. And she also wore a pile of long necklaces 11 her grandmother had given to her to play with.
On Friday, they called Lin's mother to school. Lin was a bit worried about 12 her mom would say when she saw her outfit. A hula skirt from a vacation in Hawaii 13 on top of a pair of old jeans. From the principal's office, she heard her mother and Mrs. Leonard talking.
"She'll be so 14 , " her mother said to Mrs. Leonard in the hallway. "We 15 so often in the last seven months, but this time we plan to stay here. I've got a new job in the town. I believe she'll be able to fit in. "
The sky was clear and the sun was shining brightly before the deadly disaster of the Typhoon (台风). Bernadette Tenegra, a 44-year-old high school teacher, was in her home which was on the bank of a river. The Tenegra family stayed together in their shelter to 1 the storm. They thought that the powerful storm would 2 soon as it did in the past. So they were just hanging on there.
But things didn't happen as they had thought. The water 3 with a frightening speed and their wooden house fell down, sweeping away the occupants (居住者), including Bernadette's husband and her other daughter. They were able to struggle to 4 , but the 6-year-old Tenegra was fighting against the strong wind and water, along with sharp deadly debris (残骸).
Bernadette 5 her way to the child and was holding her and kept telling her to keep on. "I crawled (爬) over to her, and I tried to pull her up. But she was too 6 and wasn't able to make it. It seemed she had already 7 , " Bernadette said, crying. "I screamed but it didn't work. "
The mother said 8 that she would never forget the last words of her daughter before death, "Ma, just let go, just let go. Save yourself. I love you forever ", the super typhoon destroyed a great number of houses and buildings. The 6-year-old 9 Tenegra lost her life. She has just seen a small part of this wonderful world 10 that short lifetime, while the whole world witnessed all the beauty of her.
Last month, I told my pupils in Pompton School about my plan. "I'd like you to do jobs to make some money. " I said. "Then we'll buy food for someone in need. "
I wanted them to experience that it's more meaningful to give than to receive. I hope they could experience a sense of their own ability to make a change.
After working for a couple of weeks, children made plenty of pocket money. I told them we would visit an old woman who lived not far away.
Before Christmas, we gathered in front of the supermarket and went shopping. When we were paying for the bread and other food, Christine cried.
"Flowers! " At the same time, the group all ran towards the holiday plants.
"Don't buy flowers! " I said impatiently. After all, it was more necessary to buy some food.
"But Mrs. Sherlock, " came the loud voice, "we want flowers. "
In the middle of plants, there was a pot of unusually purple flowers. "She will like this one. " All the children agreed.
With the address of a poor woman who had lived alone for years, we started driving. An hour later, we stopped in front of a small house. A woman opened the door. The house was so dark. It took me minutes to adapt to the dim light and then I found the room was old but tidy.
As the kids carried all the food in, the old woman greeted everyone—much to her visitors' pleasure. When Amy put the flowers on the table, the woman seemed shocked. "She's wishing it was a bag of food. " I thought.
"What do you often do at home? " Michael asked.
The woman brightened. " Feed the birds. They often fly to me because I share my bread with them. " She said.
We talked for a while, then said goodbye to each other. Through the window we saw her walk past the food, straight to the flowers. She put her face-in them and looked up with a big smile. She was different before our eyes! In that one short moment, the children saw for themselves the ability they owned to make a change. "I am so proud of you. " I smiled to my pupils.
Sometimes a person needs a pot of nice purple flowers on a dark winter day.
For those who firstly see how Li Wenlong, the 37-year-old owner of a small restaurant in Macao, works in the kitchen, it is a surprising moment. As introduced in Once Upon a Bite, Li is performing difficult physical acts to prepare the dough for Zhusheng Noodles, a type of traditional food in southern China.
To make sure that the dough gets its taste, Li Wenlong takes out a long bamboo pole, riding it on one end and putting the dough on the other. Just like being on a seesaw, Li goes up and down around 3,000 times.
The amazing scene is seen in the fourth season of Once Upon a Bite, a popular documentary series which tells stories between people and food. The six-season programme has a global view to look for a variety of grains — such as wheat, rice, millet, beans and potatoes—and tell the stories of how they became part of the human diet through different kinds of cooking ways.
Besides the stories in different countries, the producers also discovered some of villages the most faraway in China, interviewing locals to describe how their centuries-old growing and cooking traditions have been kept.
"Each grain was once the source of energy for the people of a land and the foundation of a culture, " one of the producers says. "And the development of grain is highly related to the historical development of humankind. We hope everyone can have more knowledge of different kinds of grains, sort of as a way to protect and remain the diversity of cultures. "
Fear is the bad feeling that one has when he is in danger or when a particular thing frightens him. A German proverb goes "Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is. " This is quite true as fear will often cause people to imagine the worst and act unreasonably. In that case, can fear be any good?
Personally, I think a small amount of fear is good and even necessary as it not only acts as a form of control and prevention but also serves to oneself. However, being overly fearful is bad as it will seriously hamper (阻碍) man's progress. In this essay, I will discuss how fear can be a double-edged sword, bringing both advantages and disadvantages to man.
Fear is good as it prevents people from doing dangerous acts and prompts (促使) them to control and regulate their behavior. Next fear is good as it is a powerful motivator (促进因素) . For people themselves such as students and businessmen, the fear of failure will prompt them to work hard and put in their best effort in their studies and business undertakings. This will lead to, results and progress.
Although fear is good, man must keep in mind that too much fear may be harmful to his development. Being overly fearful of the unknown will prevent people from venturing (敢于去) into areas previously unexplored. For example, in the area of space exploration, Apollo 11 would have never landed the first humans on the moon if they had let fear get in the way of their dream. To get great achievements, man must learn to conquer his fear and find the courage to overcome the difficulties that life presents. Only then can the human race continue to make progress and enjoy the sweet smell of success.
In sum, fear is good as it will finally lead to a well-controlled and motivated society. Nevertheless, people must keep in mind that they should not be clouded by fear as it will stop their progress. I believe that a small dose of fear and a good deal of courage will make a great man as such a man will have the spirit to pursue his goals and the sense to act responsibly in the process.

"I enjoyed myself very much. We planted nine Tembusu trees around the neighborhood. I learnt that there is a tree of this type right in the Botanic Gardens. It is over 150 years old. It only flowers twice a year, with a special fragrance. "
—Joyce
"Getting children to plant trees was a good way for them to experience the joy of gardening. During the tree-planting event, we even got a chance to take some vegetables home to grow and share with our children.
—Annie
"We planted more trees with the help of the residents (居民). It was good to have more trees in the neighborhood where residents could get together to enjoy themselves and relax with their families and friends in the shade. Last year's Tree Planting Day was special for residents as they got to take plants back to grow as a reminder of the event. "

At the end of the 15th century, the route was long and hard. It was nearly impossible to r Asia from Europe by land. Portuguese people solved this problem by taking themselves to the sea: They s south along the West African coast and around the Cape of Good Hope.
But Columbus had a different idea: Why not sail west across the Atlantic i of along the large African continent? The young navigator's logic was right, but his math was wrong. He thought (incorrectly) that the length of the Earth was much smaller than it was believed. So he believed that the j by boat from Europe to Asia should be not only possible but easier.
Was Christopher Columbus a hero? That d on who you ask. He was a brave and skilled sailor and leader.
I wonder at me.
