It was Sunday morning. Peter, a seven-year-old boy, was watching TV in the room while his brother was doing his homework. Their father was watering the flowers in the garden and their mother was going out to do some shopping. At ten their mother came back with a heavy basket. Peter ran up to her. He wanted to know what his mother bought. He found a bag of oranges in it. He liked them very much and wanted to eat them. His mother stopped him. She gave five to each son and went to the kitchen. Peter ate up his oranges but his brother was busying doing his homework and didn't eat them. Suddenly the telephone rang and his brother Bill ran to answer it. Bill's friend asked him to play football with them. And when Bill talked with his friend, Peter took two oranges away and ate them. Bill found it, called Peter out and beat him behind the house. He didn't tell his parents about it.
The next morning Miss Ball taught the students subtraction. She asked Peter a question. Peter didn't listen to the lesson carefully and couldn't understand it. Miss Ball began to give him an example, "If your brother has five oranges and you take two away from him, what will the result be?" Peter thought for a moment and said, "I'll be beaten. "
Almost all children expect their parents to give them more pocket money. But most of the time, their parents just give them a certain amount(数量). And the amount of money that children get from their parents is different from family to family. The frequency(频率)of getting money is different, too. Some children get pocket money every month. Do you know why?
First of all, parents expect children to choose between the spending and the saving. Then children should understand what their parents expect them to buy with their pocket money. Usually, some children spend all of the money soon after they get it. Experts usually advise parents not to offer more money until it is the right time. By doing this , children will learn to spend money well.
In order to encourage children to do the housework, some parents pay children for doing that. However, some experts don't agree because helping at home is a normal part of family life.
Pocket money can give children a chance to experience three things. They can spend it by giving it to a good course. They can spend by buying things they want. They can save it for future use. Saving money helps children understand that money never comes easily. Saving money can also open the door to a better future for children.
Parents may be surprised at how fast their kids grow up, but a study finds that U. S teenagers are developing more slowly than those in the past.
Scientists at San Diego State University have worked on a study of over 8 million U. S kids aged 13-19 for 40 years. The findings show that today's teenagers are less responsible(负责任的) and that most of them don't have a part-time job. "The whole development has slowed down. Today's 18-year-olds are more like 15-year-olds in the past, " said Professor Jean Twenge. "Teenagers are taking fewer risk than those in the past. "
Scientists have also found that more teenagers spend longer time living with their parents instead of renting(租) their own room or apartment. So is that slower development "good" or "bad"?It may depend on how you look at it, the scientists said. "The upside of slower development is that teenagers aren't growing up before they are ready, "said Professor Twenge. "But the downside is that they go to college and into the workplace without as much experience with independence. " Today's students may be smart and creative, but they often have trouble with planning, time management (管理) and problem-solving, added Professor Twenge.
One of the reasons for these changes is that today's teenagers would like to spend much time online. They keep on watching videos or playing games on the Internet instead of spending more time with their family and friends in person. Another one is that parents have become much more child-centric. In fact, parents had better let their children do everything by themselves. They should try their best to make their children become independent as soon as possible.
a. Their parents do too many things for them.
b. It's difficult for them to get a part-time job.
c. They dislike living in the real world.
d. They spend too much time online

I don't see my family very often. It's been more than 8 years since I movedthe US to Beijing. During those years, my parents grew(old) than before, just as I did. When I went off to college(大学),we lived in different (city),but we still kept in touch(联系) through the phone.
But(live) in Beijing is a bit more difficult. My home town is on the other side of the earth. It's12-hour difference. This means that when it's day-time in Beijing, it's night-time in my home town. This makes it difficult(find) a good time to call my family. But we try to call at a time that is good for both of us. So I(usual) call my parents late at night and talk about the things that happened in our lives. It's nice to check in with them and seeeverything goes.
Next month, I(fly) back to the US to see my parents and sisters. It's not easy for us to get together, when we do, we'll have a lot of fun. Like many other foreigners living in China, I do miss my family. We try to stay in touch as we can.
Everyone knows that exercise is important. We all need to exercise. Doctors say it is good for us. Children who often exercise are more alert. This means they do better in tests and schoolwork than those who don't exercise.
There are many ways to exercise. Make sure you exercise in the following ways. You have to like what you're doing. Exercise enough but not too much. It's best to exercise twice each week. Try all kinds of things until you find one, two or even three sports that are right for you.
You can exercise at fitness centers(健身中心). They have a lot of equipment(设备) there. Some people buy equipment in their homes. But it is very expensive.
Exercising can be fun. Or they can go outside and play sports together. How do you exercise?
A. Thirty minutes each time is enough. B. Friends can exercise together at a fitness center. C. It makes our heart and body strong. D. You can walk, run, swim, skate, or play ball games. E. Everybody needs exercise. F. The equipment will help exercise your arms, legs and other parts of your body to make you fit. |
