What is depression (抑郁症)? Some might think it's not a big deal, just a sad feeling, while some see it as a horrible disease. It's important to know it as it influences a lot of people.
Recently, the Ministry of Education said China would include examining for depression in students' regular health checks, to find and prevent mental (心理) problems.
It's normal to feel down or sad at times. But with depression, a sad or bad feeling lasts for weeks, months, or even longer because it is a mental illness.
Depression influences more than a person's mood. It can affect the way they act and how well they do in school or at work. It can influence their energy, sleep and eating, too.
If people are depressed, they lose interest in all kinds of things.
Most of all, depression influences how people think and feel about themselves. People going through depression often feel alone. It might seem like no one understands or cares.
They may feel bad about themselves or blame (责怪) themselves for having a hard time.
But depression is not a person's fault. It's also more common than most people think. About 280 million people around the world have depression, according to the World Health Organization.
Depression can start small. For teenagers, friends, family and school can have main emotional (情绪的) effects. But depression can build and get worse. In serious situations, it may lead to suicide (自杀).
However, don't be afraid of it. Depression can be treated with talk therapy (谈话疗法), medicine or both. If you are unhappy for more than two weeks and have some symptoms (症状) of depression, it is time to look for help from doctors or others.
You're not alone. You can try the following ways to feel better.
■ Talk to a trusted adult. such as a parent. teacher or school counselor (顾问), about how you've been feeling. | ■ Stay active and exercise, even if it's just going for a walk.
■ Try to keep a regular sleep schedule.
■ Try to spend time with friends or family, even if you don't feel like you want to. | ■ Eat healthy foods.

①Nobody likes to be sick. Nowadays many children go to the doctor to get medicine when they are sick. In ancient China, they also had doctors. But instead of treating a person after they were already sick, the Chinese believed that preventing an illness before it started was the key to one's health.
②Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a long history of more than 5,000 years. It is a summary of the experience of the working people over many centuries of struggle against diseases. TCM considers human body as a whole of QI, XING and SHEN. The ideas of YIN-YANG and WU XING are important for TCM. WU XING refers to five basic things in the nature, that is, metal, wood, water, fire, and earth.
③One important part of TCM is Yin-Yang. The Yin-Yang symbol means balance. Hold your hand out with your palm (手掌) up. This side of your hand is the Yin side. The back of your hand is the Yang side. They are opposites, but need each other to be complete. Yin is connected with night while Yang stands for day. The symbol of Yin-Yang shows how balance is important in life and in the body.
④Another important part of TCM is chi. It is life force energy. In ancient Chinese medicine, it is believed that chi flows through the body. If chi is unbalanced or blocked, a person may become sick.
⑤How does Traditional Chinese Medicine work? How is Yin-Yang and chi balances? One way is through acupuncture (针灸), which is the way to unblock chi with the use of thin needles (针). The needles are put into the skin along points on the body where chi is blocked.
Insects (or bugs as we generally call them) are of course necessary in the natural environment. But they are everywhere! They get into our homes. They take part in our outdoor parties.
The first one is really simple. If I say "You are bugging me!" to someone, it means the person makes me angry, like a bug! Bugs can be pests (害虫), too. So, when someone really, really makes us mad, we could say "Stop bugging me!"
Ants can also be pests. They are so small that they can get everywhere. In fact, if we sit too long on the ground, they may even get in our pants. So, the expression "to have ants in your pants" means you cannot sit still. You are always moving around.
In places where the weather is getting warmer, insects like flies may be coming out to trouble you.
So, we can say "a fly in the ointment (软膏)" to point to something bad that makes something else worse.
Here is an expression used in a couple of sentences. Lucy's surprise party for her husband's birthday was nearly ready. The cake was made. And all his friends were hiding in their house. Then came "the fly in the ointment". His flight was called off, meaning he would miss his party.
And we really do not think twice about killing them. So, if someone is very kind with no violent (暴力的) feelings at all, we could say that person would not harm a fly.
A. The food was ordered.
B. Now, flies are everywhere.
C. So we have expressions that use insects or bugs.
D. Sometimes their appearance means that something bad is nearby.
E. If you get ants in your pants, you may move around to get them out.
Late last week, workers on an oil ship 1 the animal, all alone, in the water. 2 began swimming toward the side of the ship. He appeared cold, 3 and fearful. The workers lowered a rope and tied it around the dog. Then, they worked together to 4 the animal up to safety. The workers that found the dog quickly gave their new friend a name: Boonrod. The name means something 5 to "survivor (幸存者)" in the Thai language.
One of those workers was Vitisak Payalaw. He has been providing new information on Boonrod on his Facebook page. He said it was 6 that the workers noticed the dog in the water. If there had been waves (波浪), he said, the animal would not have been seen.
No one knows how Boonrod 7 into the sea, or how long he had been out there. 8 Vitisak and others have suggested the animal might have fallen off a fishing boat.
On Monday, Boonrod arrived on dry land. A team of animal 9 was waiting for him in the southern Thai province of Songkhla. Workers at the Songkhla port (港口) also welcomed the dog with a special "welcome" necklace which was 10 yellow flowers. Many people took pictures with Boonrod.
Vitisak wrote on Facebook, "Today (April 15), a ship bringing the dog 11 at around 10 am. His condition has improved. He is getting 12 and can smile."
The dog is now in the 13 of an animal doctor, in Songkhla. The animal protection group Watchdog Thailand said he was in good condition and getting stronger. On Tuesday, the 14 gave pictures of Boonrod getting washed and getting plenty of love and attention.
Vitisak says that 15 no one accepts Boonrod as their pet, he will take him with him to his home in northeast Thailand.

A fire started in a field near a farm. The firefighters were called to put the fire. But the fire was than they could deal with, so someone suggested that a nearby volunteer group should be called. Although some that the volunteers would be of any help, the call was made. The volunteers arrived in an old fire truck.
They rushed straight toward the fire, drove right into the of the flames(火焰)and stopped! The volunteer firefighters jumped off the truck and started spraying(喷) in all directions. Soon, most of the fire was out.
Watching all of this, the farmer was by the bravery of the volunteers. He was thankful that farm was saved. He presented the volunteers with 100000, right there.
A local news reporter later asked the volunteer fire leader what they to do with the money. "That's clear." he replied. "The first thing we're going to do is to fix the brakes(刹车装置)on our fire truck!"
People live in all kinds of houses. They choose their houses for different reasons. isn't a lot of room for houses in the cities, so many people live in very tall apartments (公寓楼). Each apartment building can have many floors, and each floor might have three or more families.
Farmers need large amounts of land. Crops and farm animals need space, too. a result, farmers build their houses in the countryside where there's lots of open land.
For those live in hot deserts, people make houses out of clay because the thick clay walls can keep the rooms cool.
What the people in cold places? They usually raise their houses above the ground. Frozen ground is land that often has a lot of water in it. If a house built on frozen (冰冻的) earth, warmth from the house could heat the frozen ground. Then the house would sink into the mud (泥土).
Look at the houses around you. See how the house fits the place where you live.
