The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, 2013, by Rachel Joyce

The novel tells a story of a 60-year-old man who lived a boring and unhappy life, until one day, he received his old friend's letter who got cancer. Recently a British couple, Jessica and Edward, had flown to Crete. They found themselves attracting a lot of attention after coming across a large amount of money in the street.

At first, there was nothing special about their vacation in Crete. However, it was as they were exploring the souvenir shops that everything changed. The pair were just walking down the street when Jessica suddenly kicked something lying on the ground. It looked a bit like a make-up bag and so they assumed that someone had lost it.

Without thinking twice, Jessica picked up the bag and opened it. She was shocked to see a lot of money in it—a total of 7,100 Euros. There was probably a lot they could do with all that money. However, the couple didn't have it in them to steal what belonged to someone else. Going to the police was the first thought that came to mind when Jessica saw the money. She didn't consider that there was any other option, so the pair handed over the money to the local police.

The police found the owner, an elderly woman, and told the couple that the woman wanted to meet them. When they eventually met at the police station, the woman couldn't stop hugging and blessing the couple, although the couple firmly believed they were just doing the right thing.

News of what the British couple had done quickly spread throughout the island. The locals offered them free taxi rides and even had their hotel room upgraded. The pair appreciated that, but it was all getting to be a bit too much. They just wanted to have a normal vacation.

The couple is probably hoping that they fly more under the radar during their next vacation. There's only so much attention that they have to deal with.

    1. (1) What did the couple do after they found the money?
A . They decided to keep it. B . They tried to look for the owner. C . They spent it on souvenirs. D . They turned it over to the police.
    2. (2) Which of the following can best describe the locals in Crete?
A . Kind and grateful. B . Sociable and energetic. C . Rich and generous. D . Honest and determined.
    3. (3) What does the underlined part "fly more under the radar" in the last paragraph mean?
A . Have more fun. B . Spend less money. C . Take more flights. D . Gain less attention.
    4. (4) What can be inferred from the British couple's experience?
A . No pain, no gain. B . Less money, less trouble. C . It pays to be good to others. D . Money is a good servant.

In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been doing more to follow in his footsteps.

One practice involves where to display the goods. For example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food later in their trip. In department stores, the women's shoe section is generally next to the women's cosmetics (化妆品) section: while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later.

Besides, businesses seek to attract customers' senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wines went up.

When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also manage to get high rewards. They find that customers make decisions in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $ 10 million houses.

In today's world, from the placement of food to the design of houses, businesses are always exploring new and creative ways to influence customers. By doing so, businesses continue to shape our buying habits and influence our purchasing decisions.

    1. (1) Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section?
A . To save customers' time. B . To show they are of high quality. C . To help sell junk food. D . To sell them at discount prices.
    2. (2) According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy?
A . Opening the bread store early in the morning. B . Displaying British wines next to French ones. C . Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread. D . Inviting some customers to play French music.
    3. (3) What is the California builder's story intended to prove?
A . An ocean view is much to the customers' taste. B . The more costly the house is, the better it sells. C . A good first impression on customers increases sales. D . The house structure is a key factor customers consider.
    4. (4) What is the main purpose of the passage?
A . To show dishonest business practices. B . To introduce the growth of businesses. C . To report studies on customer behavior. D . To explain how businesses increase sales.

Researchers in France say they have successfully trained ants to sniff(嗅) out cancer cells. ln lab experiments, the team finds that the insects, including ants, have a better sense of smell and can quickly learn to notice VOCs(volatile organic compounds), which are released by cancer cells.

To conduct their research, the researchers performed tests with 36 ants, smelling cells under a laboratory setting. The experts exposed the ants to the smell of a sample of human cancer cells. This smell was then related to a reward of sugar solution. Then the researchers exposed the ants to two different smells. One was a new smell and the second was the smell of the cancer cells. Once this test was successful, the researchers exposed the ants to different cancer cells. As such, the researchers found that ants can tell the difference between cancer cells and healthy cells.

This isn't the first time that researchers have used the animal sense of smell to detect or find cancer cells. "Dogs' noses are well suited for medical diagnosis and are used for the test of cancer," the researchers explained. However, training them to do so requires several months to a year. Having high potential, ants are able to learn very quickly at lower cost, and are efficient.

The approach could be adapted to a range of other experiments. However, this research is only the beginning, and there are still difficulties that must be overcome before ants are actually used to discover anything in the real world. For example, it would be necessary to list what VOCs each type of cancer has and to see if ants can really be used in the medical field in the first place. Once those problems are overcome, the day may come when ants will be used to detect cancer.

    1. (1) What does the new research show?
A . Ants have the ability to detect cancer cells. B . Diseased cells grow faster than healthy cells. C . Ants can detect cancer cells without training. D . Ants can be used as a medicine to cure cancer.
    2. (2) Why did researchers conduct the research on ants rather than dogs?
A . Ants are more intelligent than dogs. B . Dogs are not able to detect cancer cells. C . Training ants could save time and money. D . Ants have a better sense of smell than dogs.
    3. (3) What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A . Ants will soon be applied in medical field. B . The research needs to be further developed. C . The research paves the way for cancer treatment. D . The result of the research has been put into practice.
    4. (4) What is the best title of this passage?
A . The Potential of Ants in Sniffing B . Ants vs Dogs: Finding Cancer Cells C . Researchers Train Ants to Find Cancer Cells D . The Challenges of Using Ants to Find Cancer Cells

How to Be a Successful Online Student

While regular schools still exist, the virtual classroom plays an important role in today's learning community. However, not all online students can achieve success in it.

Be able to communicate through writing

In the virtual classroom nearly all communication is written, so it is necessary for students to express themselves in writing. Some students have limited writing abilities, which usually requires more practice. Whether working alone or in a group, students share ideas on the subject being studied, and read about those of their classmates.

Be willing to "speak up" if problems arise

Remember that teachers cannot see their students in an online course. If they face technical difficulties or problems, they MUST speak up; otherwise, there is no way anyone can know something is wrong. While trying to explain something, students strengthen their own knowledge about the subject.

It's important for online students to think about the questions carefully and organize their ideas before answering questions. Time is given to allow for careful development of answers. Testing and challenging of ideas is encouraged. Many times online students will not always be right; they just need to be prepared to accept a challenge.

    Take the program seriously

In fact, many students say it requires much more time and effort. Requirements for online courses are not less than those of any quality program. Many online students sit at computers for hours just to complete their assignments.

    A. Be open-minded about sharing experiences.

    B. Be able to think ideas through before replying.

    C. Students can keep the online environment friendly.

    D. Online learning is not easier than study in regular classrooms.

    E. Here are some unique qualities for online students to be successful.

    F. In this way, students gain deep understanding from their classmates.

    G. This means students must make their comments and requests clearly.

  • 28. (2023高一下·东莞期中)  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had been swimming competitively for five years but after such a long time, I was ready to quit. I was often the only African American at the swimming competitions and our team couldn't afford good uniforms. However, my number-one reason for wanting to quit was that I kept receiving "Honorable Mentions (荣誉奖)". Any athlete knows that you don't want to have a bookshelf full of "Honorable Mentions", which you get just because you showed up.

One summer's day, the day before a big swim meet, I decided to tell my grandma that I was quitting the swim team. When I told her, she looked me in the eye and said, "Baby, remember these words ‘Quitters never win and winners never quit.' Your grandmother didn't raise losers or quitters. You go to that meet tomorrow, and you swim like you are a grandchild of mine, you hear?" I was too afraid to say anything but "Yes, ma'am."

The next day we arrived at the swim meet late, missing my group of swimmers in the 15/16 age group. My coach insisted I be allowed to swim with the older group. She asked me to join the race in order not to the waste the chance. However, she didn't expect me to do well, but at least I could win the eighth place because there were only eight lanes.

As I was stepping on the board, all the other girls looked at me. I quickly noticed that these girls were all here to do just one thing — beat me. All of a sudden, my grandma's words rang in my head, "Quitters never win and winners never quit. You swim like you are a grandchild of mine. Quitters never win and winners never quit." "Yes, Grandma, I will swim like I am a grandchild of yours," I said to myself.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已写好。请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph 1Without thinking twice, I swam harder than I had ever swum before.

Paragraph 2It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me.
