As an old Chinese saying goes, Spring Festival comes right after the Laba Festival, so get ready for a bowl of porridge while looking forward to the long-awaited family get-together.
Today, people across China are celebrating the Laba Festival. It is a traditional Chinese festival. It's on the eighth day of the 12th lunar month. What does this festival mean to Chinese people? OK, it just tells people to prepare for celebrating the coming New Year's Day and for wanderers to return home to get together with their family.
Long long ago, Laba Festival was a day of thanks for a good harvest. On this day, people usually eat Laba porridge, a porridge with eight kinds of mixed grains(谷物). Many temples today have the tradition of giving out Laba porridge to the public. The sweet, red porridge is believed to bring luck and joy.
The festival is also the day for people to put garlic in vinegar(醋). The garlic turns green, and this Laba garlic will be eaten with dumplings on Chinese New Year's Day. While in the past, It was used to let people remember to pay back the money they had borrowed, as Laba is near the end of the year and 'garlic' (suàn, 蒜 in Chinese) sounds the same as 'calculate'(suàn, 算).
Customs are quite different across the country. People in Qianxian, east China's Anhui Province, will eat the Laba tofu a few days before. In Xining City, northwest China's Qinghai Province, people will eat porridge with beef and mutton.
The Great Sphinx of Giza(吉萨狮身人面像)
Most scientists agree the Great Sphinx of Giza was built around 2,500 B. C. But John Anthony West says that it's much older. If he's right,"Everything anybody has learned about ancient civilizations(文明)would have to be completely revised , "he told a magazine.
West,a writer and film-maker,first got interested in ancient history after studying the work of a French researcher. The researcher said Egyptian civilization could have developed as early as 30,000 years ago, rather than 4,500 years ago,as most experts believed.
West joined a scientist to do research together. Their research suggested that the Sphinx had been worn down over the years by water, rather than by sand and wind.
Wait a minute?Water? How could that be?The Sphinx is in the Sahara Desert, which has been dry for 12, 000 years! However, before that time, it was very green. If it's true that water wore down the Sphinx, West thinks that it must have been built centuries earlier.
Whether West is right or wrong, it's important to challenge accepted ideas. That's how science progresses.
West gave some advice to kids: If you are interested in a topic, read everything you can on it. Do your own research. Don't always believe everything your teachers tell you. Ask lots of questions, and find your own answers.
I went to the park with my older sister, Cathy, on Friday. My sister left her jacket on a bench(长椅)when we played games. When we went back to the bench, a little girl in a red T-shirt was sitting there. She looked like she was 8 or 9 and had long blonde hair. She had some money in her hand. When she saw us, she got up and walked away. I asked my sister, "Did you have any money in your jacket?" "Yes, Anna, I did." she answer. I said, "Have a quick look in your jacket."
Cathy looked in her jacket, but her money was not there. "That girl stole(偷)it!" I said, and we ran after her. We caught(抓住)her soon. My sister was very angry and she said, "Give me the money!" The girl gave the money to Cathy and ran away. Then we went home. But before we could tell our parents, my mother said to Cathy, "You left your money at home. It's on the table in the kitchen. "So the girl in the red T-shirt was not a thief(小偷)! Maybe she thought we were bad girls.
