The novel corona virus (新型冠状病毒), now, officially named Covid-19, is a new illness and scientists are still studying the best way to control it.1, defeating(战胜)Covid-19 is not only the job of scientists and doctors. People also have 2 important role to play in this battle. The best way 3 prevent the virus spreading is by protecting yourself and staying healthy.
Scientists are now sure that Covid-19 is passed between people through coughing and sneezing. The virus travels 4 the air and can be breathed in by people nearby. It may also land on places such as tables and chairs. If these places 5, the virus maybe on your hands. Touching your eyes or mouth with unwashed hands can let the virus 6 your body.
To protect yourself and 7, wear a mask(口罩) at all times when out in public. This stops the people in good 8 from breathing in Covid-19 and reduces(减少)the amount of the virus that ill people send into the air. Most importantly, wash your hands often and 9, especially while you are outside your home.
Covid-19 is undoubtedly a serious challenge, but if we all contribute and behave responsibly, it is an illness 10 we can overcome (克服).
Thirty engineers were working as a team in a company. They were young and eager to learn. The management decided to teach them about finding real solutions to problems.
One day, the team was called for a1in a hall. They were quite surprised and all reached the hall holding all kinds of2. As they entered, they found a box placed in the center, full of flat balloons.
The manager asked everyone to pick a balloon and blow it up. Then they were asked to write their names on their respective(各自的) balloons3so that the balloons wouldn't blow out. All tried, but not everyone was4. Five balloons blew out5pressure(压力) .
Those who failed to mark6names on the balloons were ruled out of the game. As a result, 25 engineers came to the next level. All the balloons carrying their names were7and then put into a room, here and there.
The engineers were told to pick the balloon with his or her name on. All the 25 engineers began to search for the respective balloons in a rush. It was almost 15 minutes but no one8find the right one. The second level of the game was over.
Then came the final level. The engineers were asked to9any balloon and give it to the person named on the balloon. Within a couple of minutes, all balloons10the hands of the respective engineers.
The manager announced this was the real solution to the problem. Many times in our life, sharing and helping others give us real solutions to problems
Give your dead batteries a new life. Recycle them! Batteries(电池) are used to power clocks, computers, tools and more. However, your batteries have some serious power when their lives are over. |
WHY TO RECYCLE BATTERIES: Remember, batteries are harmful waste. This means we should properly throw them away. You may not think one little battery can cause that much pollution. But don't think of it as just one battery—there can be millions. In Canada, each person uses about 20 single-use .batteries every year. That's about 700 million batteries! I fall these batteries end up in landfills(垃圾填埋场), the heavy metals inside them can get into the water, land and air. It can be harmful to humans and wildlife. By recycling single-use batteries instead of throwing them away, you can cut down pollution and also help save energy. All batteries are mainly made of plastic and valuable metals. Through recycling programs, dead batteries can be changed into something useful like steel products, or even new batteries! |
HOW TO RECYCLE BATTERIES: Make a difference by starting to collect batteries at your home or school today. You can prepare a box for battery collection and invite friends, family and classmates to bring in old batteries to be recycled. |
There are many safe ways to deal with your batteries. You can: Find a Call2Recycle public collection station near you. Ask the store where you bought the batteries if you can return them there. Communicate with your local city government to find out if there are special programs for recycling used batteries! |

In today's world of modern science and medicine, a more traditional treatment is once again becoming popular—animal friendship.
It is now well-known that people with problems such as heart disease(疾病) or cancer live longer and get better more quickly if they have pets. Keeping pets lowers blood pressure and makes people less worried. Animals are increasingly important in treating older people who have memory loss(丧失)and other brain problems. These people often feel nervous and upset. Activities with animals help them improve their physical condition and also give them joy, entertainment and loving friendship.
Here is a case that shows the benefits(利益)of animals. John was a six-year-old mute. He had no physical problems. He just refused to talk. His older cousin, Ned, had a parrot called Sally, and John used to visit it. When he arrived, Net used to say, "Hi, John!" We all know parrots copy what they hear. After a few visits, Sally began saying "Hi, John!" when John came into the room. Then, one day, John turned to the parrot and replied "Hi, Sally!" Staying with the parrot encouraged John to begin talking.
Another use of animal helpers is in schools. In some cases, animals are used to help children with physical or personal problems. In other cases, they are used to teach children to get on and share with others, and even to teach them about animals.
lf you want to know more about animal helper programs, you can get in touch with organizations like Riding for the Disabled or do a search under "animal therapy" on the Internet. You don't have to be an animal trainer or a doctor to join in.
Ben carelessly broke a window and fell onto a piece of broken glass that stuck into his right leg. It caused a deep wound. He lost a lot of blood. Lisa fell off a bike by accident just now. Her left arm is broken. It is swollen(肿胀的) badly now. How painful it is! Emily was doing an experiment in the chemistry lab with her classmates. All of a sudden, their clothes caught fire because of the wrong operation. They were so scared and didn't want to get burnt. Sam got stung(整) by a bee while playing in the garden with his elder brother. Now he is crying loudly with a swollen face. A ball hit Zheng Fei directly on the nose while he was running on the playground. Suddenly, blood from his nose was all over his face! |
A. Cover the wound with a paper towel, clean cloth or an article of clothing. And then press it hard until the bleeding(出血) stops or help arrives. B. If you are with someone who breaks an arm or a leg, call for help from an adult. Tell the person to keep the broken part still and stay with him/her until help arrives. C. Quickly cool the burnt area under running water for at least 10 minutes immediately. Call a doctor if burns are larger than 1/4 inch. If the burn looks deep—the skin may be white or brown and dry — go to the E.R. D. Ask the person to sit straight and lean (倾斜) their head forward. Hold an ice pack against the bridge of the nose after the bleeding slows down. If it doesn't stop after ten minutes, call a doctor immediately. E. Call for help and tell the person not to pull out anything that is stuck in a wound. Stop bleeding by pressing hard around the object but not on it. Put something clean to get the object in place. F. If someone is stung by a bee, get out the sting with a card or something clean if you can. Then put an icepack on the sting. If he/she starts to have breathing problems, call for help quickly. G. Have the person drop to the ground and cover his face with his hands. Then ask him/her to roll(滚) until the fire is out. Get some medical help if he/she gets burnt. |
The scientist was in a hurry. She had to get some for her experiment before darkness fell. She was testing the water in the rivers that went into the ocean. Her job was to find out the cause of pollution the sea at nearby beaches. She lifted out the water and looked angrily at the rubbish in it. Old clothes, plastic bags and pieces of paper were in the water. "Don't people that everything they throw onto the street gets washed into rivers? And they lead right into the ocean!" she said loudly. "How many years will it take to make it clean again?"
The scientist felt sad deep in her heart. She about the ocean animals as she walked back to the beach. But when she got there,a group of students and teachers from local primary school were carrying bags of rubbish to the bins. They had spent their afternoon cleaning the beach! She was with joy.
she spoke with the teacher, the students gathered around them. With smiles on their faces, they shouted, "We do something to protect the ocean!"
"That's right," agreed the scientist,as she smiled at their kindness.
Recently, the result of the national reading survey has come out and it paints a shining future for reading habits in the Internet times. Last year more than 20, 000 people from 55cities all over China took part in the survey. The survey shows that although the daily reading time and yearly reading number of paper books, printed newspapers and magazines have dropped, digital(.数字的) reading has continuously increased. Every day Chinese people use different digital devices(装置) like mobile phones. personal computers or iPads for about100 minutes on average(平均)15.5 percent higher than the year before.
According to the survey, Chinese people's reading habits have changed because mobile phones offer people more chances to get different kinds of reading materials on digital platforms. More than 50 percent of the Chinese people who were interviewed prefer digital reading mostly on mobile phones.
Another interesting result is that the number of people who like to listen to audio-books(有声读物) has increased since 2015 .More than 30 percent of the people who answered the survey listen to audio-books, higher than the year before. It may have something to do with the way people go to and from work - many people in the countryside drive or take public transport for long hours and it leads to the greater need for audio-books
