—Yes, we'd better learn to look after ourselves.
—Certainly, go along the road and turn left.
I used to hate being asked to do something in class because I didn't like attention drawn(吸引)to myself. I always chose to sit at the 1 of the classroom.
All this changed after I joined a sports team. My teacher suggested I 2 for the basketball team. At first, I thought it was a 3 idea because I didn't have a good sense of balance(平衡), nor did I have the 4 to play basketball well. But the teacher kept advising me to go for it, so I decided to have a try. When I first took part in the practice course, I didn't even know some basic 5 of the game. Sometimes I was so nervous that I even got the ball in our own team's basket. That made me feel 6stupid. Luckily, I wasn't the only one "new" at the game. Then I 7to put my heart into learning the game and do my best during the practice. I practiced and practiced. Soon I knew the rules and the "moves". Being part of a team was 8. As time goes by, I learned how to play and made friends. I never had so much 9 ! And I started to feel better about myself.
Now I have more self-confidence(自信)in myself. Even if I am not sure about the answer, I raise my hand 10"hiding" in the back of the classroom. So, let's change from now on. It will really make us much better.
The students of Class 1, Grade 3 are sharing their volunteer experiences. I joined a volunteer team last summer vacation. We mainly helped the disabled and the old. We helped the old to check blood pressure every day. Besides, we told stories and chatted with them to cheer them up. I chose this job because of the fact that a lot of elderly people are lonely. This experience made me think more about other people and their needs.
I have been volunteering with Help Cat for the past 3 years, working with the homeless cats. I helped to clean their houses, fed them and gave them love and attention. I felt I was making a difference and getting better. This experience told me that every cat deserves(应得)a loving home. I realized I could do more than I thought I could.
I once volunteered at our community to help clean up the street. Every weekend, I got up early and worked together with the cleaners. Seeing people living in a cleaner environment, I realized I was helping my community and it made me a better person.
I can't agree with you more. About two weeks ago, I helped my neighborhood plant some trees and flowers as a volunteer, which made our community more beautiful. It gave me a huge sense of pride. |
Mr. Charles was very upset because some of his boys whistled (吹口哨) during school hours. At last, he was so angry that he said he would punish anyone who whistled again.
The next morning, when the room was very quiet, a loud whistle was heard! The students were very surprised, and Mr. Charles at once looked around to find out who did it.
The blame(责备)fell on a big boy, John. He was often a troublemaker. But he strongly shook his head, yet nobody believed him. Mr. Charles would bring him up for punishment. At that time, a thin little boy named Max was off his seat.
"Do not punish John, sir, "Max said to Mr. Charles. "It was I who whistled. "
"I was working on a difficult math problem, and I finally found a way to solve it. But before I remembered where I was, I had whistled right out, sir! "
"I am very, very sorry, sir. I did not mean to whistle, but I can't let John be punished for my fault(错误). "
Mr. Charles said, "OK, since you did not whistle on purpose, I can't punish you. "Max returned to his seat with a red face, but all the students in the class were proud of him, for every student could see how bravely he had acted.
Max was truly a brave boy. He had done what he should do, even though at the time he might be punished.
Life is like a journey. On the way, we have happiness and sadness. Sometimes it is full of regrets. It's not difficult for anyone around you to tell his regrets. When we get older, we look back and wish that we had made better choices. How can we avoid future regrets?
Make better plans. If you start to do something, you'd better make a plan before doing it. The earlier, the better. You will know what comes first and what comes last. You'll also know what you should do and what you shouldn't do. If changes happen, you will have more time to deal with them
Live a more active life. You can go around more often. More outdoor activities can keep you relaxed and active. You also need to show your kindness to others. "Thank you" can bring a smile to someone's face. Learn to say "sorry" and don't be angry with others.
Find the right friend. A friend can make your life colorful and he or she may break your life as well. So you need to think twice when you choose a friend. When you get into trouble, ask friends for help. A little help may get you good results.
Never fear failure. Everybody fails, even the greatest person. We should not fear failure, because failure is not the end of the road. We must take failure as a chance to learn and improve ourselves.
Imagine you need to send an important document(文件)far away as soon as possible. How would you do it? Chances are that you would use email or a smartphone app. However, for many people, the answer to that question is the fax machine(传真机).
The first fax machine was invented in 1843 by Alexander Bain. Then in 1964, modern fax machines became widely available. In the 1980s and 1990s, they were considered the fastest and safest way to send information.
With the development of technology, you might think email would have made the fax machine a thing of the past, but you'd be wrong. Fax use continues to grow by more than 12%every year. One explanation is that fax machines are still easier to use for documents that are written by hand. But the real reason for their continued use has to do with security(安全).
Email is convenient, but it can be hacked. This is a danger for governments, hospitals and other organizations. Using a fax machine allows information to go directly from one place to another without needing to be saved on a computer. It can then be kept in a physical location where it's more difficult to steal.
Fax machine technology grew quickly throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and it continues to develop today!
Most people drink tea in the world. But tea does not mean the same thing to different people. In different countries, people have different ideas about drinking tea.
In China, for example, tea is often served when people get together. Chinese people drink it at home or in tea house at any time of the day. They often use hot water to boil tea leaves.
Tea is also important in other Asian countries. People in these countries have a special way of serving tea. They hold a tea ceremony(仪式)in their houses when important guests come. It is very old and full of meaning. Everything must be done in a special way in the ceremony. There is even a special room for it in their houses.
In the United States, people usually drink tea at breakfast or they drink it after meals. Americans usually use tea bags to make tea. This way is convenient but tea bags can change their smell easily. Even so, people still prefer using tea bags. In summer, most Americans drink iced tea. They like to put some ice in their tea.
