"Oh boys, don't throw stones at that poor bird." said an old man.
"Why, sir?" said a little boy, "She is so noisy."
"Yes, but she uses the voice which God gave her. And it is probably pleasant to her friends. Besides, I am afraid the stone will rebound, and hurt you as long as you live!"
"Rebound?"
"Well, let me tell you a story." The old man said. "Fifty years ago, I was a boy like you. I liked throwing stones and I could throw accurately (准确地). One day, I went to visit Mr. and Mrs. Smith, an old couple in the countryside, with my parents. And I happened to see so many swallows (燕子) busily making nests under the roof of their house."
"The Smiths warmly told me that one of the swallows had come to their house for seven years and it was a mother swallow. That day, she had just returned after a long trip. She was building her nest in the some place and she planned to raise her young children there."
"Half an hour later, the mother swallow sat upon a stick near her nest and had a rest, looking at me trustfully. For fun, I tried my skill upon her."
"Unluckily, she was shot on the head, and dropped dead!"
"Then all day long, her mate (配偶) flew about, and was so sad. I was heartbroken and regretful when seeing this. And I began to hate myself."
"The Smiths finally found out all of these. They didn't say a word to me on the matter. They just buried the swallow silently."
"Now the couple have passed away. I have carried the deep wound in my memory for fifty years."
"Don't you see how that stone rebounded and hit me? Yet if I could prevent you from throwing a stone that may rebound and deeply hurt your later, I shall be very cheerful."
The boys at once dropped the stones in their hands.
Knowing how to read, write and talk in one language is enough for many people. They prefer to focus their energy on other things that improve their lives. Scientists, however, continue to discover that bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages fluently, has more benefits than many realize.
First, it's good for a child's brain. Learning a second language improves their academic achievements. Many studies have shown that children who learn a foreign language get better grades at school. Bilingual children also show a better ability in their native language. Their grammar, vocabulary and spelling skills are stronger than those of single-language speakers. Children who learn a second language become expert problem-solvers and creative thinkers. That's because their brains are constantly working to sort out which language to speak and when. Studies further show that bilingual teens are better at multitasking.
Multilingual parents understand the benefits of learning more than one language. Ben Mazor of Montreal speaks English, French and Hebrew. He says, , "Kids' brains are like a sponge (海绵). They absorb everything. It comes to them so easily while they're young. So why not give them the chance to learn another language? "
A number of studies show that ★ . Scottish researchers did a study using data from 835 native English speakers, who took an IQ test at the age of 11. They were tested again in their 70s. Researchers then compared the tests. Those who spoke two or more languages had obviously better cognitive abilities (认知能力). Dr. Thomas Baka, co-author of the study, concluded, "Our results suggest a protective effect of bilingualism against age-related cognitive weakening."
So, who would refuse the benefits of learning a second language?

Dear Patrick,
Every time before a test, I feel so nervous that I can't p well on the test. How can I change the situation?
Guisi
Hi Guisi,
It's normal to feel nervous before or even d a test, but you have to learn to focus and calm yourself. (thank), there are a few ways to deal with this.
First, you can try including more exercise in your daily or weekly routine. This can help lower your stress. When it comes to the test itself, you can use some methods to stop yourself feeling nervous. For example, you can close one hand and the other in turns, (bring) your attention to the physical motions ( (物理运动) . A idea is to breathe deeply, hold your breath and c to five, and then breathe out slowly, also counting to five. These are only meant to be short b, however, so you can get back to taking the test soon.
If you still have trouble (feel) nervous, you can ask the teacher to move your table to a c of the room or, if possible, take the test alone in another room. Whichever way you choose, I wish you the best of luck.
Pat
