The Development of Electric Cars
Electric cars may seem like a recent invention, but they have been around for years. In the early 1900s, there were 1 electric cars on the road than gasoline (汽油) cars, because at that time, gasoline was expensive compared with other fuels (燃料), electric cars were more popular.
When gasoline 2 dropped and new technologies on gasoline cars were developed, electric cars were out of date. Gasoline cars became more popular 3 , because they could go farther without stopping.
During the 20th century, gasoline cars got bigger, heavier and faster. They needed more fuel, and it 4 more air pollution. For years, the car makers didn't worry about pollution. They didn't worry about how much gasoline cars used, either. But when people began to 5 that there was not enough oil on the earth, they asked carmakers to produce more efficient (高效能的) and less polluting cars.
One 6 of solving the problem was a "hybrid" car (混合动力车), one that ran partly on gasoline and partly on electricity. Hybrid cars became popular in the 2000s because gasoline prices went up while prices ofhybrid cars went 7 .
An all-electric car uses no gasoline. The problem, however, is that car batteries (电池) need to be recharged (再充电). That makes electric cars not so 8 for long journeys. Many people are not pleased with it. The government and carmakers are working together to 9 safe, cheap and useful electric cars. When more and more people have these electric cars in the future, a gasoline station may 10 .

Some animals can easily find their way home after along journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 meters and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert (沙漠), so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It's like someone walking six kilometers through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth's magnetic field (磁场), while humans can't. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.
At the 2023 Shenzhen Marathon, Luo Shujian, a 45-year-oldman, ran across the finish line with a unique stroller (婴儿手推车). His son Xiaobai who is thirteen years old sat in the stroller and he has cerebral palsy (脑瘫).
Xiaobai's mother and sister, through a video call joined in the celebration of the 56th marathon run by the father and his son since 2015.
Because Xiaobai has cerebral palsy, he spent more than two years learning how to walk. He can't express any emotion (情感) by speaking. But when he is clapping (拍手) and smiling, it means he is very happy. For most of Xiaobai's lifetime, he can only stay in the recovery room (康复室) at home. However, Luo did not give up trying to give his son a full and happy life.
Luo read a story of Dick Hoyt and his son on the Internet. Inspired (鼓舞) by Dick's spirit, Luo started undertaking (从事) marathon training activities with Xiaobai. Luo works 12 hours everyday, and he had no sports experience. So he keeps on getting up at 4 a.m. to jog or cycle before work.
Sitting in the stroller during the marathon is also a big challenge for Xiaobai. "Xiaobai has the same state as runners. He will feel excited in good fitness and feel tired in poor fitness." said Luo. Xiaobai likes to stare at the outside world while sitting in the stroller during races, clapping and smiling to show his happiness.
Luo and his family have overcome (克服) many difficulties and they will keep running together with Xiaobai in the future, giving Xiaobai the best possible life in the process.
The Chinese Pingfeng (folding screen) is an ancient invention and traditional Chinese furniture (家具). Its earliest common use dates from the Han Dynasty. The term Pingfeng means protection from wind, showing its purpose at the very beginning.
As time passes by, it has been made into different sizes with colourful paintings. On screens usually appears a dragon. It stands for nobility (高贵) and power. The crane (仙鹤), a beautiful bird, can be seen on screens, too. It's a symbol of everlasting (长生的) life. Beautiful flowers, which mean wealth and good luck, are also chosen as a popular design of the Pingfeng. All the designs carry people's beautiful wishes.
Behind Pingfeng lies a beautiful story. In the past, the unmarried daughter of a rich family was not supposed to see or be seen by men except her father, brothers or very close male cousins. When an admirer paid a visit, however, she might take a secret look at him from a screen behind which she would be completely hidden. Her father would discuss poems with the young man and ask him to create one. If the daughter and her father gratified the young man's poem and his looks, she might agree to take him as a husband.
Today Pingfeng is back in fashion for its beauty and its practical (实际的) use as furniture. Acting as a moving wall or divider, it can be the perfect match (相配) for modern sofas and walls, which adds style to them.
Pingfeng is more than beautiful furniture.
Dreams may make you smart. This was discovered by scientists who do research on dreams.
What is a dream exactly? Scientists explain that during sleep time your brain reviews your experiences in the day. It tries to connect your new experiences with the old memories (记忆). As your brain connects things, it turns them into a story, and then you get a dream.
Dreams may help you deal with worries and fears. What has happened during the day maybe painful. While you are sleeping, however, the brain will replay the painful memories in a safe dream space. There the bad memories become less painful. And you will feel better after waking up.
Dreams also seem to be able to help you learn. This idea is supported by a study. So scientists advise you not to stay up all night studying, especially when an exam is coming. They say a sweet dream might help you get higher marks.
Dreams may make you more creative, too. It was reported that a famous songwriter came up with his best song in a dream, and wrote it down as soon as he woke up. However, dreams alone can't bring about creativity. In fact, the songwriter spent a lot of time thinking about the song before the dream. In a word, hard work matters (要紧) more for creativity, though dreams also have a role to play.

How time flies! Almost more than two years has quickly passed since I came to the middle school. I find I have changed a lot.
