Hi John,
How are things going there? We're all fine. And we can't 1 to see you again on New Year's Eve. Dad plans to buy some fireworks(烟火)and we all want to have a 2 in Mom's favorite restaurant. Now we're enjoying having a few days off. We need to relax and do some shopping. We also hope to visit Aunt Anne next week before we 3 to work. But it depends(依赖于)if it will snow or not. It's quite 4 to get to her house when there is snow. Usually she asks us to wait until(直到)spring. She says she will come to visit us soon. Oh, let me know when you arrive and I 5 have dad meet you at the train station. He will try to get there earlier.
Have a good day and see you on the 31st!
Steve
Making friends is not easy. Sometimes it can take 1 before you become true friends with someone. Friendship means different things to different people, 2 most people have the same opinions (观点) about what a "TRUE FRIEND" should be. There are some common qualities of a "TRUE FRIEND".
Firstly, true friends should be 3 with each other. It means telling the truth 4 and 5 telling lies(撒谎), but of course, this is not always so easy. Sometimes you do not want your friends to know 6 about you, such as getting a terrible score in a test. Then you may want to tell a lie to make yourself feel much 7 , but this is not a good idea. Your friends will 8 out the truth at last, and they will be 9 because you lied to them. So it is very important 10 friends to believe in each other.
The second most important quality of a true friend is being a good 11 . You do not want to have a friend who is 12 to listen to your problems, or a friend who might talk about your problems with everybody in school. It is very important for friends to 13 a secret.
Finally, be generous to your friends. You should 14 your things with your friends.
Please remember 15 we give you. We believe you will have more friends in the future.
Stop wasting food! Activity update The activity to reduce food waste has just entered its third week, and we're already seeing some great results. We'd like every student and teacher to join in the activity at school and at home, so if you haven't started yet, read on and join in! |
Stop wasting food at school According to school lunch director Marge Kaplan, "The children are making a big effort to think in a sensible way about the food they put on their plates. We now have about 15% less waste and we think this percentage will grow as more children join in the activity." The school canteen now offers two sizes for all main meals: small and large. This week they'll replace single bread rolls with slices of bread. You can take as many slices as you want, but one at a time to save waste. |
Stop wasting food at home Every year, we waste about a third of our food. A lot of this waste is cereals, fruit and vegetables. In the UK, more than 97% of waste ends up in a landfill site. That's a lot! Come to a special meeting with supermarket owner Carlos Rodriguez to learn how we can save food and money at home! |
Activity meeting! How to save food and money at home When: Friday 12 May, 5—6 p.m. Where: School hall Who: Carlos Rodriguez What: Top tips on how to store food, measure sensible portion sizes and cook tasty meals from leftovers Students and families welcome! |
Over the past 6 years, Zhang Chaofan has given away 1.35 million yuan and raised 5.2 million yuan from the public to help more than 400 people with health problems—including teachers with cancer (癌症) and disabled children in poor families—learn traditional Chinese culture.
Zhang, 29, was born without a left arm in Changchun, Jilin, but her hard work to become stronger has encouraged many people. She was chosen along with 67 other honorees (领奖人) to receive the Eighth National Ethical Role Model award (第八届全国道德模范提名奖) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on November 5th, 2021.
In 2015, Zhang set up a handwriting and painting school in Changchun. When she found that some parents were unable to pay for their children's education, she made the lessons free and began providing 300, 000 yuan every year to help them.
In early 2020, her school was made to suspend all courses because of COVID-19 (新冠肺炎) but it didn't stop her from helping the poor families. She raised more than 8.9 million yuan and gave them away to Hubei hospitals.
"Women in the new times should have the courage to create value and also have a sense of social duty," she said. "It is my great honor to be chosen as a model. This will become a driving force for me to move ahead and keep helping the poor and the disabled."
Over the last few centuries, there have been many changes in our lives.
To start with, people were not able to travel such a long distance in such a short time in the past. Planes were not very popular at that time because they used to be a very expensive way to travel. Nowadays, we have fast, comfortable vehicles, such as cars and high-speed trains.
Secondly, in the past, people had to work much harder because they did not have the tools that we have today. Today, most of the difficult and dangerous work is done by computers and machines.
Thirdly, in the past, the living conditions were not as good as they are now. There were no bathrooms or running water in many houses, and many people could not buy things like fridges, TV sets or washing machines. Now, most families have several of these things.
Lastly, communications have become much easier than before. In the past, we kept in touch with others by writing letters or sending faxes, but now we have many other ways to choose from, such as making a phone call, sending emails or messages and chatting online. Moreover, we can even see the people whom we care making a phone call with through mobile phones, and we can see each other while chatting online. The most surprising thing is that we can make a phone call with the astronauts and see them when they are in space. What a magical thing!
Thanks to the technology, especially the Internet, our lives have become much easier and happier than before. I'm sure they will become more wonderful in the future. Don't you think so?
One German school has come up with a cheap and simple DIY system to help with the air moving problem in the room during COVID-19. It was invented by a teacher's scientist husband, Frank Helleis.
In the school, above every desk, there is a clear plastic funnel attached to a narrow pipe (连接着窄小管道的塑料漏斗). All the pipes are in turn connected to one wide pipe leading to a fan (风扇) that directs the air outside through a window. Warm air breathed out by the students rises up overhead and is sucked (吸) up and pushed outside before it can spread through the room. Another window is kept half-open to allow in fresh air.
The system manages to take out over 90% of aerosols (气溶胶) from the room. It can be built with materials from a DIY store for around $235. Some people were successfully putting all the materials together in half a day. And it has been shared online for anyone who wants to use the idea.
Helleis had the idea after discussing with his team on how they could help during COVID-19. "We found the best thing to do was to take out the aerosols," he said.
Helleis says air purifiers (净化器) can be useful but are more expensive and noisier than his invention. And unlike his invention, expensive purifiers don't deal with CO2, which might cause tiredness. This gives schools a reason to keep his homemade system.
The school plans to spend the next few weekends installing Helleis' system in all the classrooms.
Gaynor was a nine-year-old girl. She lived in a village in North Wales. In July 1976, on her way home from school she saw a silver object shaped like a saucer (茶碟) in the field not far from her home.
The strange craft (飞行器) was about 30 feet long and 9 feet high. It had yellow windows along the side. There was a light shining in a kind of box on the top. Although Gaynor was very frightened, she did not run away. Instead, she lay quietly in the tall grass and watched the door of the strange craft open. She saw two people wearing silver suits come out of the craft. They were carrying some kinds of equipments (设备) which they used to examine the ground. They were short and had large pink eyes, Gaynor reported.
After about half an hour, the two people went back into the craft. At once there was a loud noise and the UFO took off. Although Gaynor told her mother what she had seen, her family decided to keep quiet about it. They didn't want people to laugh at their daughter. However, 18 months later, Gaynor told the story to UFO experts. They made her fall asleep, so they could be sure if she was telling the truth. Not only did she repeat her story, but also she was able to draw a picture of what she had seen.

Sally is a friend of mine when I was studying in the middle school. I still remember that one year, my school held a singing . I took part in it because I really loved singing. I sang with a girl named Sally. Unluckily, I was so that I forgot the lyrics (歌词). I was on the stage (舞台), looking pale in the face. We lost it. I felt so sorry. But Sally tried to comfort (安慰) me by saying, "There will be chance soon."
After a month, our school's art festival began. I entered it. The person I thought of to join me was Sally, although I wasn't sure if she would like to. She said she would join as well I was asking other people to join me. How happy I was! The day of the festival arrived. As we walked into class, our classmates started cheering for us. The big words "Come on!" were on the cards for us. It was a really and touching afternoon. We ourselves.
As you can see, who I want to thank most is Sally, who didn't up on me. It is her that helped me to go on. In my opinion, nothing can separate us. Sally will always be there with me forever.
