Waste can be seen everywhere in the school. Some students ask for more food than they can eat, and others often forget to turn off the lights they leave the classroom. They say they can afford these things. But I don't agree with them.
Waste can bring lot of problems. Although China is rich in some resources, we are short of others, for example, fresh water. It is reported that we will have no coal or oil to use in 100 years. So if we go on our resources, what can we use in the future and where can we move? Think about it. I think we should say no to the students waste things every day. Everybody should stop wasting as soon as possible.
In our everyday life, we can do many things to prevent waste happening. For example, turn off the water taps when we finish washing; turn off the lights when we leave the classroom; try not to order more food than we need, and so on. Little by little, everything will be changed. Waste can be stopped one day, if we do our best.
Becky was in the bathroom. She was brushing her 1 and the tap (水龙头) was on. "Turn that tap off," a voice came out. Becky was scared. She looked around, but saw no one. "Turn off that tap. You are 2 water!"
"Who...who are you?" Becky's voice was 3 .
"I'm a drop of water. Do you know 4 I'm from?"
"From the tap, I think," said Becky.
"Yes. But a few days ago, I was in a cloud. Then I dropped into a river. The river 5 me to a lake. Then I travelled to your city and it was time to get cleaned up."
"Get cleaned up?" Becky asked.
"Yes. I was 6 during my journey, so they must clean me up. Then I travelled 7 the pipes (水管) under the ground. I waited there 8 you called me, and here I am. After you've finished with me, I'll go to a sewage plant (污水处理厂). Then they'll push me into the river and I'll go 9 to the sea again."
"Again?"
"Yes. So remember not 10 me or waste me!"

Turn the taps (水龙头) off while brushing your teeth, and take short showers of four minutes or less! | Be an advocate (倡导者)! Share your knowledge with others, and help them become eco-heroes too! It takes lots of people working together to make changes happen—so share, share, share! |
Reduce, reuse, recycle! Before you throw something away, stop and think about what else it could be used for! | Be friendly to wildlife! Make your garden wildlife-friendly! You could build a bee hotel, or even create a pool. If you own a cat that goes outdoors, put a bell around its neck so that vulnerable wildlife can hear it coming and make their escape! |

The Taojinshan Greenway (绿道) in Shenzhen has been open to citizens since July, 2019. Sitting at the west side of Shenzhen Reservoir, it is as long as 7.07 kilometers.
With plants along both sides and lakes lying at different sites, tourists can enjoy wonderful scenery all the way. If they are tired, they are free to take a rest at the 3 stops that were built for breaks. Additionally, five unused guard posts (岗亭) along the old route have remained. They serve as sightseeing platforms for visitors to feel the cultural spirit behind the place.
Of all its 13 scenic spots,8 were designed to have AI helpers. From them, visitors can gain information on parking, tour guide services and more. The smart greenway, with free Wi-Fi available, also provides environmental data, such as temperature, wind speed and air quality. What's more, it can give visitors warnings of coming extreme (极端的) weather and natural disasters, including rainstorms and typhoons that may hit Shenzhen.
"Started in the middle of 2015, the building process of the Taojinshan Greenway has taken good care of the wildlife and environment nearby," said Yang Shiming, an official in charge of the project.
The greenway is an example of construction projects without doing harm to nature. It also shows the role that technology plays in building a smart greenway for more life convenience.
A man named Randy in Canada liked to hunt for trees. He looked for big trees and old trees in Canada. He made maps to show where these trees were. He did not want to cut them down. Actually, he wanted people to take care of them.
Ancient trees are today rare (稀少的) everywhere in the world. On Vancouver Island in Canada, there are so many big trees. The biggest trees are about 800 years old. They are the survivors of a forest fire. The fire brought damage (损害) to the area about 350 years ago. Randy was told of a very tall tree on Vancouver Island. The tree was said to be 314 feet tall. That would make it the tallest tree in Canada. Randy set out to find the tree.
But someone else found it first. It was found by a logger—a person whose job is to cut down trees. The logger wanted to cut down Canada's tallest tree and all the trees around it.
Randy made a path (小路) in the forest in order that people could see the tall tree. The tree was so big and beautiful that even more and more people wanted to save that forest. Thanks to these people, that forest is now a park. Canada's tallest tree is still there.
There may still be a bigger tree out there. Maybe you will find it. But there are only a few old forests left in Canada. Many are still at risk of being cut down.
Pollution is one of the biggest problems in the world today. In many places, rubbish is thrown into lakes and rivers.
In some cities, the air is filled with pollution. If it is not cleaned up, more people will be hurt.
Land and water pollution kills many animals every year.
If we do not act to improve the environment, more living things will be killed by pollution.
We should separate rubbish into different groups. In this way, it can be recycled and reused. We had better plant more trees. What's more, we shouldn't put the waste into lakes or rivers.
If we can do these, we will make the world a better place to live in.
A. Trees reduce dust and help keep the air clean. B. This makes some old people and children ill. C. It's time for all of us to take action right away! D. We can make our lakes and rivers cleaner and cleaner. E. Because of this, these places have already been polluted. F. As well as people, animals are also harmed by pollution. |
Trash collection is problem for Curitiba. First, the city has only one landfill. Second, its garbage trucks do not fit on some of the streets in the city's low- income(低收入)neighborhoods. Curitiba knew the solution lay in getting everyone involved(参加).
In 1989, the city started a recycling program called Garbage That Is Not Garbage. The city set up a central recycling center for sorting(把…分类)recyclable materials, food-based and waste. Colorful cartoon characters were symbols of different kinds of recyclable materials, which could help children get to know the importance of recycling. Collection bins were the same colors as the cartoons, reinforcing(加强) the message. People made money by picking up the trash at these bins and taking it to the center for processing. Today, Curitiba claims to have the highest recycling rate of any city in the world.
Câmbio Verde, the Green Exchange program, and Compra do Lixo, the Buying of Garbage program, are successful recycling programs in Curitiba. They get low-income- residents(居民)to join in the city's recycling program by having them transport trash from neighborhoods that are hard for garbage trucks to reach.
Depending on what they deliver, people exchange their trash for cash, food and services. Their way of life is improved, and the city is better able to manage its trash. These programs are one way Curitiba has gotten creative as a green city. It shows how involving everyone can make green living possible.
