I recently visited my friend Lydia and saw her new puppy. The dog was really cute! Lydia smiled as she told me about his first day at home. It was 1 "puppy love".
Later that day, as I 2 my dog Skyler climb the stairs, I thought about how Lydia didn't expect the extra (额外的) care when she brought home a hairy new family member. But that is often what that "puppy love" 3 .
When Skyler joined us, she was house-trained in no time, which 4 us a lot of trouble. At home, she always needed to be behind someone. When taking her on hikes, we were 5 by her energy (精力). If we took off running toward the end of a field, she would have already 6 the finish line before we had even made it halfway.
Now, at the age of 14, Skyler still needs to be right beside you on the sofa or to 7 you into the next room. On walks, 8 we turn the corner onto our street, she pulls hard on her leash (栓狗带) to race toward home. She has made us laugh endlessly and has 9 me countless times.
But it is hard. It is sad to see this once-strong dog have a (an) 10 time walking up the front steps. Over the past few years, we have had to give up on taking certain 11 trips because we are not able to take good care of Skyler. My husband spends hours each week making special food for her that helps to 12 her kidney (肾) problems. And I always have to sit in the back of the car whenever she 13 with us because Skyler needs help to get comfortable, 14 I may get carsick as a result.
Sometimes I complain about (抱怨) old Skyler, but I know she has taught me about love. Dogs give us unconditional love. The 15 we can do is to give it back.
Keeping velvet flowers alive Velvet flowers, pronounced (发音) the same as "Ronghua" in Chinese, mean being rich. They are often used in traditional Chinese festivals. Velvet flowers are not only beautiful handicrafts (手工艺品), but also hold cultural meaning. It is believed that they can bring happiness, peace and good luck. Velvet making looks easy, but it's not. It needs care and patience to learn the skills. ____ Many people throw away the pits (核) inside fruits after eating them. But the craftsmen (工匠) of Weifang nut carving turn them into artworks. Weifang nut carving goes back to the Qing Dynasty. Craftsmen back then often used peach pits to show off their skills. It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in 2008. Bringing umbrellas back to life Oil paper umbrellas, with a long history in China, used to be common. During the Tang Dynasty, they were introduced to places as far as Japan and Vietnam. The hand-made umbrellas become less used in daily life. Instead, they turn into artworks. The umbrellas take many steps to make, including making bamboo ribs, pasting papers (糊纸) and painting. |
Taking care of the old people seems an unpopular choice for many young people. However, this is what Tashi Wangmo, a 34-year-old woman from Barkam, Sichuan, decided to do at the age of 17.
Growing up as an orphan (孤儿) raised by those around her, Tashi Wangmo had always wanted to give back to society (社会). "Finding that Barkam Nursing Home was taking in new workers in 2010, I thought this was the best way to realize my dream." she said.
Tashi Wangmo's love for the elderly people she cares for has grown day by day and seen her put everything she has into her work. "When I first started here, I was just a young girl while some of the old people were in their 50s or 60s. They had no children, and I had no parents, so we kept each other company." she said.
Gradually, she got a better understanding of the elderly and the meaning of her job. She noticed that the key to getting along with elderly people is that you need to think of them as being a bit like kids. "If you can stand a child making trouble for you, if you are patient enough to teach a child to eat, get dressed and talk, then you can do the same for elderly people."
In 2023, Tashi Wangmo was chosen as an NPC deputy. She said that being an NPC deputy is not as difficult as it may seem. "NPC deputies are a bridge between the country and the people," she said. "I became an NPC deputy by simply doing my job, and I want to bring the difficult situations of the people from the mountains into attention and bring hope back to them."
Teeth are wonderful! Let's learn about our teeth.
When babies are born, they have a set of 20 primary teeth, sometimes known as milk teeth which sit in their gums (牙床) waiting to grow. Around the age of six months, babies' first teeth are preparing to grow out of their gums. Children usually have all their baby teeth by the age of three. Then, at around the age of six, children's baby teeth are pushed out, ready for growing adult teeth. The final teeth which grow from the gums are the largest teeth in the human mouth. They are called wisdom teeth and are often not fully seen until a person reaches their late teens or early twenties! An adult usually has 32 teeth.
Looking after your teeth is an important part of keeping your body healthy and it should be a part of your habits in your everyday life. To keep your teeth healthy; the most important thing you can do is to brush them every day. Brushing your teeth twice a day for at least three minutes. Using toothpaste can better protect your teeth from bacteria and plaque (细菌和菌斑). Plague appears and builds up on your teeth when food is left on or between your teeth. It includes bacteria. So if it is not cleared up, it can cause a hole on your teeth or even teeth losing. Unless you brush your teeth every day, you will have to see a dentist. A dentist can give your teeth check-ups and make sure that your teeth are healthy.
