In Flanders, a small town in Belgium, lived a little boy called Nello. He became an orphan (孤儿) at the age of two. Then he lived with his grandpa in a small house. Life was harder for them.
Their life depended on Nello's grandpa. Every morning, the old man would collect fresh milk from one house to another. He then had to load (装载) the milk on a cart (马车) and sent it to the city. Growing up a little older, Nello would try to help his grandpa to travel from Flanders to the city.
One day, as Nello and his grandpa were going home from the city, they saw a large dog lying on the side of the road. The dog was motionless (失去意识).
"What happened?" asked Nello. "Is the dog dead?" His grandpa touched the nose of the dog with his hand and examined the body of the dog. He then said to Nello,"The dog is seriously ill. We have to take him to a vet (兽医),or he will die." With the words, his grandpa put the dog on the cart and the two went home. The fact was that the dog was abandoned (抛弃) by his master because of his serious illness. Seeing the dying dog, Nello was heart-broken. The kind-hearted boy took good care of him. Even though Nello and his grandpa did not have enough to eat, he would still feed the dog with milk and bread. Day by day, the dog began to stand on his feet, and became stronger and stronger.
Later they even give the dog a name—Patrasche. From then on, Patrasche became member of the family.
Patrasche had been badly treated by his master all his life. Never had anyone treated him nicely as Nello and his grandpa. Patrasche was thankful for the kindness he received, so he wanted to help them,
From then on, people in town would see such a scene: a large dog was pulling a cart loaded with milk with the grandpa pushing behind and Nello helping at the side.
a. Patrasche helped to pull the cart.
b. The dog had the name--Patrasche.
c. Nello and his grandpa found a sick dog.
d. Patrasche became a member of the family.
China has sent the final section (部分) of its Tiangong space station into space. After a13-hour trip, the new section, known as Mengtian, docked (对接) with Tiangong space station on the early morning of November 1st,2022,finally completing it. The new section was launched(发射) from Hainan Island in the south of China.
For years, China has been working hard to create its own space station. Last year, China began to launch three modules (舱) of Tiangong space station, one at a time. The main module, Tianhe, was launched in April 2021. It holds the power source and main controls for the station, as well as the astronauts' living area. In July 2022, China launched its first laboratory module, Wentian, which is the country's largest ever spacecraft.
The new module, Mengtian (meaning "dreaming of the heavens") . is also designed as a laboratory. It is about 18 meters long and has 8 special research areas for experiments. Mengtian is set up so that experiments can also be run outside the module itself. Chinese astronauts can use special robotic arms to run experiments from inside Tiangong.
China's space program is working with the European Space Agency on some experiments on the Mengtian, China says that one day, foreign astronauts will also be able to visit Tiangong,
Tiangong space station is expected to last 10 to 15 years.Though the Mengtian module completes the station, China could add more modules in the future.
China's space program has grown greatly in recent years with a series of (一系列) successes. In 2020, for example, its Chang'e 5 probe (探测器) returned to the earth carrying moon rocks. Those were the first moon samples (标本) brought to the earth since the 1970s.
Some students often complain about learning English. The subject, they say, takes up too much of their time. They have to read many passages, look up new words in the dictionary and do lots of exercises. Although they work hard, they still can't get good scores on tests. "Why?" they ask. "How can I enjoy success?"
The story of Chinese astronaut Deng Qingming might help to answer their questions. Deng was chosen as an astronaut trainee (接受培训者) in 1998. That was long ago—you readers hadn't even been born yet. Since that day, he had spent almost all of his time training hard to become an astronaut. Over the years, Deng has seen other trainees with him go into space one after another. However, he was always a.backup (后备人员). He often felt sad. Sometimes, he even cried.
But Deng never gave up. Although he is now in his fifties, he keeps training hard. "I must be ready whenever the chance comes to me," he once said. Finally, on the night of November 29, 2022, he and two other astronauts boarded the Shenzhou 15 spaceship and flew into space. Deng had waited 24 years for this very moment.
So, if you want to give up learning English (or something else), think about Deng's story. Your efforts might not pay off immediately. Be patient, though. Try to improve your methods and keep going. One day, success will knock at your door. Being different from Deng, you probably won't even have to wait 24 years for that moment!
How to Improve Your Reading
Learning how to read well in English might not be an easy task. Reading well in English is useful for many reasons, not only for taking tests. If you want to improve your reading in English, the following are just for you!
Choose right reading materials.
There are so many choices! There are textbooks and graded readers, but there are also a lot more books you can read. Here is a good rule to follow: choose reading materials where you understand at least 80% of the content (内容).
Be intentional (意图明确的).
Being intentional means doing something on purpose with a reason in mind. With reading, you need to be intentional by setting a reading aim. Decide on a certain number of pages you want to read each day. To make sure your daily practice gets done, spare some time and put it in your study plan!
.
Reading can both introduce you to new vocabulary and teach you how to use them. Many words in English are often used together in a consistent (相互连贯的) way. Reading groups of words, or words that go together, will help you better understand how to use your new vocabulary.
Don't try to understand everything.
As you're practicing your reading, you need to accept the fact that you might not understand every single word, and that's OK! Your brain can't learn so many new things at one time. It's more important to get the big picture of what you are reading. .
A. Read word groups.
B. Don't choose a book that is too easy or too difficult.
C. You could also be intentional with planning a time to read.
D. But it's something you'll have to do on your language learning journey.
E. And you can go back to check the new things you don't understand later.
F. We should read with our friends together.
Jack sat alone on the bus ride home from school. All his friends were 1 their class projects excitedly, but Jack remained silent. How could they understand his feelings when their parents would help them? His parents worked all the time.
When the bus stopped, he raced home, 2 his schoolbag on the floor, and walked straight to his bedroom.
"Jack?" Grandpa's3 called out."Was that you?"
Jack stopped 4 he closed his bedroom door."Yes, Grandpa, it's me."
Grandpa Higgins came from the kitchen carrying a sandwich. "You don't sound okay," he said as he took a 5 .
Should Jack tell Grandpa the truth? What could it hurt? He quickly 6 they should do a class project for the weekend and together they would build something with an adult. The students needed to make a 7 to explain how their projects had gone.
Grandpa listened quietly. " 8 are you so unhappy?"
Jack felt his 9 and anger rising inside him. "Because I don't have anyone to help me." He sounded so sad and so angry.
Grandpa raised his eyebrows (眉毛) 10 . "What am I?" he asked gently. Jack froze. "You'd build a project with me, Grandpa?"
"Sure, I would," Grandpa said."Just let me finish this sandwich."
Jack's heart seemed so 11 that he thought it would float (漂浮) away. He rushed to the schoolbag and 12 his assignment paper (任务单). Then, they studied the assignment and made a list of ideas. Finally, they 13 to build a cardboard robot from old biscuit and noodle boxes. They used glue, staples (订书钉),and tape. Grandpa helped a lot and he 14 found a box of eyeball stickers (眼球贴纸).
When they finished, Jack looked at their misshapen (奇形怪状的) robot. He couldn't stop smiling. "I think it's the best 15 I have ever built. Now I have to write my report," Jack said, hugging Grandpa. "Thank you, Grandpa. I had a lot of fun."
How can I become a better person? This question has been in my head for long. As students, we spend most of our time (study). I know that learning at school (make) us better persons, but I always dream of doing more.
Last year, I got to know a group of autistic (患自闭症的) children. We called (they) "the Snails". It was hard to communicate with them at first, because they wouldn't like to. After two-week training, I became more skilled and got (close) to them day by day. I also received much (please) when playing with them. What's more, I found that every one of "the Snails" had his or her own talent. And their colorful pictures on the wall caught my special attention, it was difficult to tell what they were trying to express.
(deep) moved by their pictures, I decided to hold a charity (慈善) sale. We walked on the busy street, selling their creative pictures. 60 pictures (sell) that day. People thought their pictures were full imagination.
Back to the question about how to become a better person, I think I'm lucky enough to get my own answer.
