As a teenager, school was difficult for me. I had a kind of 1 disorder, which means I couldn't direct my attention to what I was doing. So when everyone else in the class was centering their attention on tasks,I could not.
In my first 2 class,Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it,all finished in 45 minutes. I immediately put up my hand and said,"Mrs. Smith, you see,the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not 3 the task. "
She looked down at me through her glasses, saying,"You are not different from your 4 ,young man. "With her encouragement,I tried. But I didn't finish the reading 5 when the bell rang. I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became 6 to me. It was about a blind person,Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn't get much education. But Louis didn't 7 . Instead,he invented a reading system of raised dots, which opened a whole new world of knowledge to the 8 .
Wasn't I "blind" in my class, being made to learn like the "sighted" students? With thoughts running through my head,I found myself 9 attracted in reading and writing. I completed the task in less than 40 minutes. I realized that I wasn't different from others. I just need a 10 place. If Louis could find his way out of his problem, why should I give up?
I didn't expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith,so it was quite surprise when it came back to me the next day with an"A"on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words,"See what you can do when you keep trying. "
Every day, people spend hours and hours on their phones and computers. So how can we keep a healthy relationship with digital devices(数字设备) in this fast-moving world?
Anna Marsh,a professor of psychology at University of Toronto, tried not to use the digital devices. So she gives some advice on how to keep a healthy digital diet while using technology
First,we should care for our brains just as we care for our bodies by controlling(控制) the digital intake. In fact, reducing(减少) our use of the devices is like eating less junk food. What we need to do is to think about whether our heavily used apps and websites benefit our life or not. After that, add some healthy apps to our phones, such as self-care and learning apps.
That's why we should be careful about the time we spend on the digital devices. For example,we can keep the phones on or near our body all the time, but we'd better only check them once or twice a day. Getting out into nature or doing some exercise is also a good way to stop us from looking at our phones.
A. After she stopped using them, she felt she had more time to think. B. Also,if we focus only on our devices,we will miss out on our lives. C. Then we can remove apps like games. D. And it seems impossible for most people to cut out screen time completely. E. Reducing our use of our phone is not easy. F. And it's better to put our phones away at dinner or when having family activities. |
Have you ever been to Singapore? For thousands of tourists from China, this small island in Southeast Asia is a wonderful and safe place to take a holiday. On the other hand,Singapore is an English-speaking country,so it's also a good place to practice your English!
Have you ever tried Chinese food outside of China?Maybe you fear that you won't be able to find anything good to eat when you travel. In Singapore, however, you'll find a lot of food from China, you won't have any problem getting rice, noodles or dumplings. Singapore is also an excellent place to try new food. Whether you like Indian food,Western food or Japanese food, you'll find it all in Singapore!
Most large cities have zoos, but have you ever been to a zoo at night?Singapore has a Night Safari. It might seem strange to go to a zoo when it's dark. However,if you go to see lions, tigers or foxes during the daytime, they"ll probably be asleep!A lot of animals only wake up at night,so this is the best time to watch them. At the Night Safari, you can watch these animals in a more natural environment than in a normal zoo.
One great thing about Singapore is that the temperature is almost the same all year round. This is because the island is so close to the equator(赤道). So you can choose to go whenever you like-spring,summer,autumn or winter. And,of course,it's not too far from China!Come and experience the life in Singapore!
Aron Ralston is an American man who is interested in mountain climbing. As a mountain climber,Aron is used to taking risks. This is one of the exciting things about doing dangerous sports. There were many times when Aron almost lost his life because of accidents. On April 26,2003,he found himself in a very dangerous situation when climbing in Utah.
On that day,Aron's arm was caught under a 360-kilo rock that fell on him when he was climbing by himself in the mountains. Because he could not free his arm,he stayed there for five days and hoped that someone would find him. But when his water ran out,he knew that he would have to do something to save his own life. He was not ready to die that day. So he used his knife to cut off half his right arm. Then, with his left arm,he bandaged himself so that he would not lose too much blood. After that,he climbed down the mountain to find help.
After losing his arm,he wrote a book called Between a Rock and a Hard Place. This means being in a difficult situation that you cannot seem to get out of. In this book,Aron tells the importance of making good decisions, and of being in control of one's life. His love for mountain climbing is so great that he kept on climbing mountains even after this experience.
Do we have the same spirit as Aron?Let's think about it before we find ourselves"between a rock and a hard place",and before we have to make a decision that could mean life or death.
At the end of Grade 10,I realized I needed to find a summer job. I was tired of having to ask my parents for money. I wanted to go to the shopping center or movies with friends without having to ask for S20 from my parents. I imagined having a job at a store or at a summer camp where I could play games with children. But what actually happened was disappointing. The only job I managed to find was cleaning up tables at a local restaurant.
At first, the idea of clearing tables upset me. The thought of getting up at dawn(黎明) to go clean up after people made me regret ever asking for a job. The first day was terribly busy. I was running around, racing to get a table ready for the waiting customers. I'll never forget how tired I felt that day,but I'll also never forget sitting down for lunch with my co-workers for the first time. People my age or ten years older all sat together and talked about their days. All of a sudden,I was a part of that, and it felt good to be so included.
I've now worked at the restaurant for almost one year. I've learned to be happy about getting up so early because I know there are going to be a few good moments every day there.
From starting there as a shy student,I've been able to grow into a person that can go up and greet anyone,at work or anywhere else. A year ago, getting an impolite customer might make me feel bad,but very soon I can laugh it off with my co-workers. The little job has given me so much, and I can't wait to go back and continue to grow from my experience.
