Perhaps you've heard of the huge action superstar of the 1980s and 90s, Arnold Schwarzenegger, famous for movies like The Terminator. Even now, at the age of 76, Schwarzenegger has never given up on his passion for bodybuilding and physical fitness.
As a child born in 1947 in Austria, Schwarzenegger had watched movies about Hercules(赫拉克勒斯,大力神) and dreamed of being as big as the heroes he saw on the screen. Schwarzenegger began working on his dream when he was a teenager, exercising and weightlifting nonstop. As a young man he would take part in the biggest bodybuilding competitions in the world, winning the titles of Mr Universe five times and Mr Olympia seven times.
At the height of his bodybuilding, Schwarzenegger decided to try and break into Hollywood. He moved to the US with little money, knowing hardly any English. But he worked tirelessly on learning the language and acting.
He wasn't welcomed into Hollywood with open arms, being told his ac cent wouldn't work, his name was too long and that his body was too big. "…Everyone said…‘You will never become a leading man',"Schwarzenegger said in an interview with Virgin Radio UK.
But Schwarzenegger wasn't going to be held back."I didn't listen to the naysayers,"said Schwarzenegger,"…like Mandela always said, everything is impossible until someone does it. And that's the way I feel."
Schwarzenegger went on to become the Governor(州长) of California in 2003 and ran for two terms before returning to the world of acting. He continues to act, runs exercise programs and has also written a number of books on personal fitness and achieving success.
People now keep flat-faced dogs such as French bulldogs(法国斗牛犬) as pets because they are cute. Some people call these dogs "lazy" because they get sleepier more easily than other dogs during the day. However, these cute dogs are having a hard time, according to a recent study.
Scientists at Eotvos Lorand University in Hungary watched 92 family dogs of different types while they were sleeping.
During the study, the dogs spent about three hours with their owners in the sleep lab. With nothing special to do, the dogs soon fell asleep. At that time, the scientists recorded the dogs'brain activities by an electroencephalogram(EEG, 脑电图), which doesn't hurt the dogs.
The study found that the flat-faced dogs slept more than the other kinds. This may be because they don't get enough sleep at night. The scientists explained that this is because of sleep apnea(睡眠呼吸暂停症), which only happens in French bulldogs.
During their sleep, they can't get enough air and may find it difficult to breathe, which makes them constantly wake up.
Some French bulldogs may sleep while holding a toy ball in their mouths. Owners may think this is funny. But they're actually doing it to keep their airways open so they can breathe more easily.
This, however, is only one of the health problems dogs have because of breeding(培育). According to the website Pet Helpul, a lot of pet dogs are bred based on what people like, such as shorter legs, heavier bodies, and larger ears. Bulldogs are one of them.
Lots of pet lovers are calling for people to respect dogs as they are. "Breeders must take the health of their dogs seriously instead of just for cuteness," Australian vet Karen Hedberg told ABC News,
Naturally, American schoolchildren love holidays. .
Besides having national holidays such as Thanksgiving and Presidents' Day off from school, students get longer breaks in the spring and during the summer holidays. In fact, kids in US only go to school for about 180 days a year. However, parents think there are advantages and disadvantages.
On the one hand, school holidays allow families to spend time together. Many American parents take time off from work during June, July or August to travel with their children on vacation either in US or a foreign country. This means that parents with young children may have to pay more in babysitting or daycare costs. As well, the long summer holidays mean that students sometimes get bored.
For example, some kids enjoy summer camps and outdoor adventure(冒险) holidays. Such trips are great for adventurous students. They also have a lot to offer students who aren't usually interested in traditional PE activities. You can do courses in survival(生存) skills, for example.
Students who are not excited about summer camps and outdoor adventure may take part in courses in computer game design, film making and photography during the holidays. Students can practice their foreign language skills and experience everyday life in a different culture.
A. To students, holidays are perfect.
B. And they get a lot of them each year.
C. Finally, the traditional school trip to foreign countries is always popular.
D. On the other hand, schoolchildren get much more time off school than parents get vacation time.
E. Besides going on trips with their parents, American students enjoy taking part in different kinds of activities during the holidays.
My husband Mike had been working in Florida for five months. Our 5-year-old daughter Kallie 1 him very much. So Kallie and I were flying to Florida to spend a week with him.
The plane was full. 2 we did not get our boarding passes(登机牌) until we arrived at the gate, Kallie and I couldn't get 3 together. Kallie was 4 about the trip and had counted on me reading to her the whole way.
I asked the passengers next to me if they would change places with Kellie or me. They all said 5 .
Meanwhile, a mother and her two children several rows ahead of us were also in the same 6 . The mother could hold her baby, but her 6-year-old son had to sit with strangers. And nobody 7 to help her.
At that time, I saw a group of students on our flight. The students' leader 8 and said to the woman,"Ma'am, I think we can 9 you."He spent 5 minutes rearranging(重排) his group so there was space for the family to sit together. A 10 came on the mother's face.
11 , the man sitting next to the leader turned around to me and asked,"Would you and your daughter12 our seats?" We changed seats and being together made our 13 so much better.
Would that man have offered us his seat if the leader hadn't done so for the mom and 14 children? I am not sure. But I do know that 15 is contagious(传染的) and good deeds(行为) cause more good deeds.

One day, I happened to meet an Englishman in the street and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, I said I would remember at least 20 words a day. The foreigner seemed be very surprised, gently shaking his head and saying, "You don't say!" I didn't understand, and I thought, "Perhaps this is not a right thing to talk ."So I said to him, "Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? you ever been there?"
