Why are planes usually white? There are many reasons. First, this color can protect planes from sunlight. Also, white lets people see damage (损坏) on planes more easily. Third, white planes are easier to see at night or during bad weather. | Blue masks are common in hospitals. In the earlier years, the masks were white. But it was found that the white masks would reflect light and make doctors' eyes painful. Besides, blue can make people feel less nervous and not afraid. Also, blue doesn't show dirt easily. |
Tires are all black. Why? Early car tires had a much lighter color. That's because they were made of natural rubber. Its color is off white. Later, people added carbon black to the tires. This makes tires look black. Michelin is a French tire company. It made colorful car tires in 1996. But the colorful tires would attract (吸引) drivers. This could cause car accidents. | The color helps tigers catch their "‘meals". The eyes of some animals, like deer, are different from human eyes. Orange is bright to humans. But deer see the color as green. In the forest, they can't see these "green" tigers. So, it is easy for tigers to hide and catch them. |

①Have you ever visited any traditional Chinese gardens? They look like more natural sights than some Western Gardens. They have a long history. As early as 1500, there were two main types of gardens: imperial gardens and private gardens. Imperial gardens were for the use of the emperor and his family. Private gardens were built by important officials or wealthy businessmen. Both types of gardens were built for hunting and resting.
②The Summer Palace in Beijing is China's most famous imperial garden. It covers about 3,000,000 m². Kunming Lake takes up almost three-fourths of the garden's total area. There are over 3,000 ancient buildings and more than 400,000 plants in the garden. You can also see more than 40,000 valuable works from each ancient period. With such a rich collection, the garden is known as the "Imperial Garden Museum."
③As for private gardens, the most famous one is the Humble Administrator's Garden (拙政园) in Suzhou. It has an area of only 41,000 m². It is quite small compared to imperial gardens, but it's beautiful. When you are standing in any corner of the garden, it all looks like a lifelike picture. And the whole garden looks different in different seasons.
④The traditional Chinese gardens have been designed (设计) to look naturally formed. Mountains and waters, trees and flowers, houses and towers are well-organized. They don't look crowded together at all. In fact, Chinese gardens are in some ways very much like traditional Chinese sight paintings. The two have influenced and developed alongside one another. Both of them show the importance of nature in Chinese culture.
Ravi the teacher was very tired after a long, hard day at school.
He walked towards his house. Just then, Ravi felt something uncomfortable in his throat. He coughed and coughed, and something came out of his mouth—it was a heron's feather!
"How strange!" he thought. "How did it get in my throat?"
When he got home, he told his wife about it. His wife agreed that this was very strange. She also promised she wouldn't say a word. Or her husband would be the talk in the town!
When she went outside, their neighbour waved, "Have you heard any news today?"
"My husband was walking home and…you won't believe it…some heron feathers came out of his mouth! But you must promise not to tell anyone!" replied the teacher's wife.
The neighbour then went to the shop to buy some vegetables. He told the shopkeeper who loved to gossip (说三道四) all about what was going on in the town.
"You know what," said the neighbour, "Ravi the schoolteacher was giving a lesson today…and a whole heron suddenly came out of his mouth. ▲ "
Then the cook came into the shop. "Did you hear about that?" the shopkeeper said in a low voice, "Ravi the schoolteacher was buying pencils in the village shop—and suddenly a lot of herons flew out of his mouth! Ssh, don't tell others!"
The shopkeeper's little boy heard this. He ran outside to tell his friends. Soon, the rumors (谣言) had spread throughout the town!
When Ravi walked into the classroom the next morning, all his pupils were looking at him quietly—it was very unusual! Even more strangely, their parents were looking at him through the windows too.
"Why are you all looking at me like that?" he asked.
"We heard that yesterday a heron flew out of your mouth, and some other kinds of birds too. And a river of water with fish of all kinds in it! We want to see you do it again!" A boy spoke up.
Ravi sighed (叹气) and put his books on the desk.
"Today's lesson is a very important one!" he said."I think you all need to learn it!"
A bell rings at 7 pm every evening in Mohityache Avadgaon village, in India, telling people that it is time for everyone to turn off screen devices (设备), like televisions and mobile phones. At 8:30 pm, the bell rings the second time, telling the 3,000 villagers that screen-free time is over. The leaders of the village introduced it so that young people could focus on their homework and not be influenced by funny videos or phone messages. However, some say that a screen simply allows people to get information — it is not harmful in itself. A person can decide for themselves when to put down a device. So should you set limits (限制) on screen time?
Yes—screen time should be limited
Phones, computers and TV are great ways for getting information and lots of fun. However, they can be addictive (使人成瘾的) and some people need help to break from them. Even if people are chatting on their phone or playing online games together, they can still feel lonely. Screen-free time means people can connect with family and friends in the real world. It's also a great chance for people to go outside and be active, which is good for their health. Too much screen time can lead to other problems, such as not sleeping properly and being short on creativity.
No—people can manage their screen time
Through devices like phones and computers, people can find answers to many questions. Screen time can be productive—you can read great works of literature (文学), discover wonderful facts or read about important things happening in the world. It is great for homework and curious minds. Electronic devices also allow friends and family to stay in touch. Most people naturally take screen breaks, for example when they eat or exercise. People should be free to judge for themselves how much screen time they should have.
Now that you've read a lot about it, tell us what you think on the website theweekiunior.co.uk/polls. Choose YES if you think screen time should be limited, or NO if you don't. We'll show the results next week.

After a while, Manju saw over at Grandmother and said, "You've 6 a lot, but I've done a little." Grandmother said. "Breaks bring bad luck, but your side looks 7 . You're doing a good job."
