Teaching your child about safety is important, and it is skillful, too. When you teach safety rules to your little child, it will help if you provide clear reasons for the rules. Try to help your four-year-old child understand that these rules are not used to stop his fun, but to keep him safe. The fairer your rules seem to your child, the more likely he is to follow them.
Try to avoid scaring them. The reason why you don't want your child to climb up onto the top of the tree is not "You'll fall off the tree and break your neck and die." but "If you do it, you may get hurt." If you exaggerate(夸大) potential dangers, your child will not believe that your rules are serious.
When your child doesn't follow your safety rules, you need to make him see that unsafe behavior is dangerous. If your child runs out into the street, you should immediately pull him back, repeat your rules, explain your rules and warn him not to do it again.
If your child then repeats the unsafe behavior, you should let him know the connection between his actions and the results. In the example above, you might make him come back right away. " I told you that you can't run in the street. It's not safe. If you can't play outside safely, you can't play outside."
If your safety rules seem fair to your child, he will probably be ready to follow them and even accept them as his own rules. And they will gradually become his safety habits and part of his developing consciousness(意识).

Atule'er is a 200-year-old village in Sichuan Province. It's on a 800-meter cliff(悬崖) top in southwest China. The 200-year-old village became known around the world when a photo of its rattan ladder (滕梯) appeared in 2016. The rattan ladder was the only way for the viliagers to go to the outside world. It usually took them about two hours to carry farm products to sell at the nearest market. And you can imagine how difficult it was for children to climb up and down the rattan ladder twice a day.
Chen Beier, a reporter from Hong Kong, China, visited the special village on a warm spring day in 2021. She set out to make a documentary called No Poverty Land. The trip turned out to be hard when she was half way up the steel ladder to the special village. At last, she finished the 2556-step steel ladder journey. She found the villagers were glad to have the steel ladder. It helped them be safer to go up and down and it also helped them save more time.
Atule'er has become a tourist attraction. About 100,000 visitors went to visit the village in 2020. Villagers had a much better way to improve their lives.
The government has also built houses for the villagers at the foot of the mountain or in the town near the village since 2021. The houses are 25㎡ to 100㎡ with modern kitchens, toilets, running water and electricity. " I'm very happy that I got a very good house in 2022," villager Mose Laluo told reporters, "After moving to the town, my children can go to school easily, and hospital services will be convenient, too."
China has changed a lot, and the village is just an example. But some people just find it hard to believe. Now, reporters like Chen has shown us what can be done about that: Don't just tell people about the great changes. Show them when you can.
a. Villager Mose Laluo got a new house from the government.
b. Chen Beier went to Atule'er for the documentary named No Poverty Land.
c. The photo of the rattan ladder made the village known in the world.
d. Villagers went up and down with the help of the rattan ladder.
Most of us have learned the virtue(美德) of honesty from some stories. The story of Pinocchio teaches the importance of telling the truth to us. Every time Pinocchio lies, his nose grows longer. These types of stories show children that "honesty is the best". The fact is that people lie for many reasons.
One reason people lie is to hide a mistake. While it is true that everyone does something wrong from time to time, some people do not have the courage to admit their mistakes because they are afraid that they will be blamed(责备). For example, students might lie to their teachers about unfinished homework. They might say that they left the homework at home. These students do not want to get in trouble, so they make up an excuse.
Parents, particularly those with young children, may teach their children to use this type of "protective" lie in certain circumstances(状况).76. Many parents teach their children to explain that their mother and father are too busy to come to the phone at that time. In this situation, a protective lie can mean greater safety.
Lying to keep the peace or to stay safe can have positive results. However, lying to stay out of trouble can lead to more trouble in the end. Understanding the motives behind the impulse(冲动) to lie might minimize this habit of lying.
A. But why do so many people lie? B. In fact, they did not do the homework at all. C. The children don't want to lie any more. D. People lie for many reasons, both good and bad. E. Another reason for lying has to do with self-protection. F. The protective lies are useful and necessary for children. G. What should children do if a stranger calls while their parents are out? |
