A man got lost in a desert. He walked for two days but he still couldn't find his way out. Dying for water, he found an empty house in the desert. There was only a water pump(水泵)in the house! The man was so happy that he ran to draw(抽)water. But no matter how hard he tried, no water came out.
He was sitting sadly on the ground, when he saw a little bottle with a cork(瓶塞)in it. On the bottle, there was an old note saying: "You must add the water into the pump before you can draw water! Don't forget to fill it with water again before you leave!" The man took the cork out and found the bottle was full of water! "If I only consider myself, I can go out of this desert as long as I drink the water," he thought, "If I do as the note says, I might die of thirst(口渴). Should I take the risk or not?"
At last, he decided to do as the note said and began to draw water. Surely, much water started running out from the pump! After he drank enough, he filled the bottle with water and added his words after the old words on the note. "Believe me, do as the note tell you!" he wrote.
The coldest and most difficult place in the world to live is Antarctica (南极洲). It is the land of snow and ice near the South Pole (南极). Most people do not think there is much life in the icy waters around it. They are wrong. Actually, there are more than one hundred different kinds of animals there. The most famous animal of Antarctica is the penguin (企鹅). Halley Bay (哈雷湾) was the world's second largest home for penguins.
However, penguins are now in great danger. Recently, scientists found that the number of penguins has dropped quickly. One of the main reasons is that many storms hit Halley Bay. Thousands of baby penguins died from the terrible weather.
Scientists feel worried about this. Halley Bay used to be a safe place for penguins but now it isn't. Luckily, another home of penguins has gotten much bigger. In order to keep safe, many penguins have moved there. Although penguins may have greater chance to keep alive, they are still facing the danger of dying out. Unless we do something, they won't have anywhere to go one day.
A blind box keeps what's inside a secret (秘密). Usually, there are toys in blind boxes, but now stores are putting leftover (过剩的) food in them.
. Each box costs little money but has a lot of food inside. They are more and more popular in China's cities, such as Beijing, Nanjing and Chengdu.
Back in 2021 when I was studying in the UK, I bought leftover blind boxes from an app called Too Good To Go. Each box cost about 3 to 5 pounds (27 to 45 yuan), and there were usually three to four things inside. For example, a box I bought from the coffee shop Costa had three kinds of bread and one cake. .
Every time I bought a blind box, the excitement of opening it hit me first. . Wasting less food is also good for the environment.
But the boxes also brought me problems. . Also, the food may not be healthy enough. I had to make other dishes, such as a salad to make the meal healthier.
A. The food inside is near its expiration date (保质期) and will be thrown away if no one buys it B. Since I can't choose what's in the box, sometimes I got the same kind of food C. That helped me save a lot of money D. I like to buy blind boxes E. The box cost 3 pounds but the original price (原价) was around 10 pounds |
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of the greatest works by Mark Twain. The book is so interesting. Even today, it is 1 popular among kids. Although I am in my thirties, the book remains one of my favorites. After re-reading the book recently, I have 2 an important lesson from Tom Sawyer.
In our daily lives, we are often given some boring or tiring tasks. What's in your 3 when your mom tells you to clean the floor? Have you ever wanted to complain? I think most people have.
Tom Sawyer, however, thought "4 " when he was given a boring task. One Saturday morning, Aunt Polly told Tom to paint the fence (篱笆). Tom's friend Ben Rogers happened to walk past. Instead of complaining, Tom told Ben that he felt "5 " about the task. "Only one in a thousand—maybe even two thousand—boys can do this!" Tom said.
Tom's 6 made Ben interested in the task. He even gave Tom his apple so that he could have a chance (机会) to 7 the fence. If Tom had thought about 8 but complaining, he would have had a bad day painting the fence.
This story teaches me a valuable lesson: Complaining (抱怨) is 9 . The next time you are given a boring or tiring task, don't complain. Unlike what happens in the story of Tom Sawyer, it is unlikely that someone will come and do the work for you. However, without complaining, you'll feel 10 and perhaps even do a better job!
Some people live in their hometowns. However, many Chinese choose to leave the countryside and then search work in the cities. Zhong Wei is one of them and he
(live) in Wenzhou for almost 13 years. He is busy with his work in factory. He said that it was a shame that he had no time to go back to his hometown.
Besides Zhong Wei, Linlin also lives far from her hometown with her parents. She has to choose to part with her grandparents in the countryside. Last week, her parents (take) her to the Hangzhou National Tea Museum. It was a relaxing peaceful place near a lake. They watched how to make a perfect cup of tea. It reminded Linlin of her grandpa who enjoys drinking tea and (collect) tea sets. It also encouraged her (learn) more about Chinese culture.
Although many people like Zhong Wei and Linlin are not in their hometowns, they have discovered some good changes in their hometowns. They know that their hometowns have developed (rapid). Zhong Wei thinks things will become better. However, according to him, some things will never change. Linlin agrees with (he) and considers that hometown is still a wonderful place. It holds all the childhood (memory).
You may think you can't live in summer with no air conditioners(空调). ①But in ancient China, hand fans were the only help for people to keep cool. Chinese people started to use hand fans about 2000 years ago.
The fans have different shapes, like round and square. They are usually made from all kinds of things. Palm leaf (棕榈叶) fans are cheap and easy to make. Sandalwood(檀香) fans have a sweet smell.
Now, hand fans are not just something for people to cool down. They become artworks. Tuanshan and zheshan are the most popular.
Tuanshan is like a full moon. There are beautiful birds and flowers on tuanshan. In ancient China, women liked to use it. Poets(诗人)often use tuanshan to describe a woman's unlucky life. Nalan Xingde wrote, "If only life were as beautiful as when we first met, why should the autumn wind bother(费心)to pity(怜悯)deserted(遗弃的)painted fan?"
But men, especially literati(尤其是文人), usually like to use zheshan. Because zheshan is usually made of paper and they can write on it. Today Chinese people still use these fans. ②下次你看到一把扇子,你可能会想起关于它的故事。
