Rain can be disappointing, but don't cancel your day out just because of that. There are plenty of things that you can do on a rainy day.
Go to a museum This is probably one of the first things we all think of when it starts raining, so museums can often be filled with people. This makes it difficult to buy tickets. But with a little forward planning, it can be an easy thing. Simply keep up to date with your weather app and book tickets ahead on rainy days. |
Go for a walk This may sound strange at first. However, a walk in the rain can not only be fun, but it can also clear the mind. The sound of rain is something we all find relaxing. Walking in the rain with an umbrella can be a great experience. It can give you a new view on where you live. |
Go traveling Would you like to travel with your friends? On a rainy day, tourist spots will be much quieter. Trafalgar Square in London, the Angel of the North in the North East and the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol are just a few sights you could visit. |
Go to an indoor market An indoor market can make a rainy day busy. At an indoor market, you can get away from the rain, have something to eat and find something you love. Britain is famous for its indoor markets, from Affleck's in Manchester to Snoopers Paradise in Brighton. There are so many indoor markets to choose from, so you can find anything that you are looking for. |
Have you read The Tale of Peter Rabbit? It's a very famous children's book, written by Beatrix Potter. Beatrix was born in 1866. She and her brother kept many small animals as pets—rabbits, mice, frogs and even bats (蝙蝠)! They both liked to draw their pets, but Beatrix liked drawing animals from her own imagination most. She also loved enjoying and drawing nature when they visited beautiful places like Scotland and the Lake District.
To make some money, Beatrix started drawing cards with animals. She liked writing and illustrating letters too. One day, she wrote a letter to her friend's son, and told the story of Peter Rabbit. She decided to make the story into a book. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was published in 1902, and it was a great success! She wrote, illustrated and published many more books. She also created dolls, painting books, games and other things according to her characters.
Three years after The Tale of Peter Rabbitwas published, Beatrix bought a farm in the Lake District. She learned about farming and bought more farms and land to help protect the landscape (自然景色). She enjoyed country life very much, and was very active in protecting the environment.
When Beatrix died, she left almost all her farms and land to the National Trust, an organization which protects historic places and landscapes. You can even visit Hill Top Farm today, which is exactly like it was when Beatrix lived there!
So if you haven't read The Tale of Peter Rabbit, or other Beatrix Potter books, why not visit your local library or bookshop today?
Zong Qinghou was the founder (创始人) of Hangzhou Wahaha Group. He was born in 1945 in wartime China. He grew up very poor in Hangzhou and often went hungry. His father was out of work, and his mother supported the family of five children as a factory worker.
"Because of the hardship, as a child I had many dreams and hoped to make big money for my parents in return," Zong said in a history book. As the eldest child, Zong left school after junior high to support his family and spent over ten years doing different jobs, including hard physical work at a far-away farm.
In 1978, Zong returned to Hangzhou and spent the next ten years working as a salesman. "My only dream at that time was to have my own company and do what I wanted to do, and I had been looking for such a chance," he said in the history book. The chance finally came in1987. Zong borrowed 140,000 yuan to start his own company, selling ice pops and stationery to students at a nearby primary school.
The company, which would later become Wahaha, sold ice pops for a cent each. The company is privately owned. During his door-to-door sales, Zong learned that many children were picky (挑剔的) eaters and didn't get all the necessary nutrition (营养). That was a big headache for parents.
Seeing a potential chance, Zong worked with a professor of nutrition to invent a vitamin drink for children, called Wahaha Oral Liquid.
The product became a huge success. The company achieved nearly 100 million yuan in sales in the third year after it went on the market. That year, Zong founded the Hangzhou Wahaha Group after buying a failing canned food factory.

The Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday, said the best records are the ones you tell your friends about at school or in the park. He said about 75 to 80 percent of the records are new and updated because there are so many records to choose from. The Guinness World Record researchers find more records than they can put in on a book. They get about 100 requests every day, but they say no to about 95 percent of them. Records have to be measured and prove that they happened. They can't hurt people or animals.
"The 2024 edition is the end product of a year in which nearly 30,000 applications were reviewed (审核) by our records managers," said Glenday.
