—That's amazing.
—Oh, what a pity! I ____any of them yet.
My husband and I bought a house when we were in our fifties. One of the1 we bought it was thatit was so amazing. It had a big Japanese red pine(松树), which looked2 in our front yard. For 20years, it was a beauty to all who3 . Animals liked to climb it and play there. Beside it was my smallgarden of4 and bushes that I'd planted.
Early last year, a heavy snowfall hit our city.5 we were enjoying a quiet Saturday morning, thehouse shook and we heard a loud sound. The tree had6 , destroying most of the bushes and roses in thegarden. We called some workers to take the tree away. After a week, the yard was7 a mess with woodshaving(刨花)and holes everywhere.
In March, I bought a few bush and rose seedlings(幼苗)to8 those that I thought hadn't lived. But in May, plenty of new flowers were growing in the yard! My old bushes and roses grew back and werehealthier than ever before! Our yard turned9 a beautiful garden. And this summer, one year later, allof the plants are three times bigger than they were before.
Life might be10 for you at the moment, but you never know what the future holds. It might just bemuch brighter.

Welcome to Classic Reading. I'm your host, Jordon. While living in China for the past seven years, I'vebecome interested in Chinese culture, especially classical Chinese poetry. I have also known some Chinesepoets, such as Li Bai, Du Fu and so on. Today, I will talk about a poem from the Tang Dynasty by the poet HeZhizhang. Here is an English version(版本)of the poem by Xu Yuanchong, a world-famous translator ofancient Chinese poems in both English and French. Let's take a look at his translation.
Oh, I return to the homeland I left while young,
Thinner has grown my hair, though I speak the same tongue.
My children, whom I meet, do not know who am I.
"Where are you from, dear sir?" they ask with beaming eyes.
In this short poem, He Zhizhang tells a story about a visit to his birthplace. It's been decades(数十年)since the last time he was home, but he could still pick up his local accent. Things did not change much, butthe people did. The poet had mixed feelings about it, so he wrote this poem.
Personally, I like this poem because it reminds me of my own hometown. No matter where I live or forhow long I've been away, my hometown and family will always have a special place in my heart. I hope youcan enjoy this poem as much as I do. See you next time!
Are you good at remembering what you've learned at school? Is it an easy process for all people? Noone's memory is perfect. Even the smartest people forget things. This does not mean a person has a badmemory. It means he is not using his mind to his advantages.
The brain has short-term memory and long-term memory. When we learn something new, it stays in ourmemory for around 20-30 seconds. This is our short-term memory. It can hold a small amount of information. If we repeat it and use it often, this information can move from short-term memory to long-term memory, which is the place where memories are stored for a long time.
The skill for remembering is moving information from short-term to long-term memory. No one knowsexactly how this happens. But one thing is for sure—practising, or making repetition of information, is one ofthe most popular methods of remembering. And scientists say that long-term memory will never fill upcompletely with memories in one's lifetime.
Then why do we forget things? Forgetting things that are not important helps our brain to rememberthings that are important. Our brain is always "cleaning out"useless information to make room for somethingmore useful.
If you are interested in improving your memory, there are lots of simple things you can do, like eatinghealthily, sleeping well and exercising daily. Besides, it's also important to challenge your brain. You can playmind games, learn a musical instrument or study a new language. All you need to do is to keep your brainhealthy and active.
Feng Boyao and MengShuqi found that their city library didn't have enough Braille books for blindpeople and many of the Braille books were out of date.
So, they teamed up to help the blind by fixing the problem. Feng and Meng both studied at No.37 MiddleSchool in Taiyuan, Shanxi province. They invented a new kind of Braille reader. Their work won first prize ina national competition aiming to nurture creative thinking by encouraging youths to solve social problems. The invention was also granted(授予)a national patent(专利). When connected to a computer, their Braillereader can turn words into raised dots(凸起的点). Blind people can read by touching the dots, which aremagnets(磁铁). This is the first Braille reader that uses magnets.
"We found that today's Braille readers are very difficult and expensive," Feng said. "So, we decided todevelop a user-friendly product, especially for young blind children from grades1 to 3. Moreover, it only costsabout 2000 yuan."
After making their first device, Feng and Meng visited a school for the blind to get advice and improvedit based on the students' needs, like changing the size of the screen and the amount of space between the dots. "We hope the invention will be popularized(普及)in the future to help those blind people who can't affordthe Braille reader now," Meng told Taiyuan News.
