One day, a(n) 1 woman came in the store where I worked. I welcomed her to the store, and she immediately started up a conversation, telling me her name was Barbara and asking me about my day. I stepped out to walk with her and nodded along while she 2 .
As we chatted, Barbara stopped to look at a shirt, "I really like the pattern. I used to wear colors like this when I was younger."
I asked, "Oh? What changed?"
Barbara chuckled (轻笑). "Well, as I started to get older, these sorts of clothes just didn't look good on me anymore. Maybe it will 3 for you, since you're a very pretty young girl."
"Don't say that, Barbara! You're still very beautiful."
Laughing, Barbara replied, "Thank you, sweet girl, but it's all right. I'll just 4 to what I normally wear. Patterns like this are made for young people like you."
I always hate it when older people believe their 5 is ugly. Older women buy wrinkle (皱纹) correctors, dye (染) the white and silver out of their hair, and do everything they can to cover their age until they 6 and say to themselves, "I'm just old and ugly now."
I don't see things that way at all. So, I 7 her to try it on.
When Barbara stepped out of the dressing room, I was 8 . The dress fit her 9 perfectly, the colors brought out the warmth in her skin, and most importantly, she looked really, really happy in it. She didn't just like the dress; she liked HERSELF in the dress, clearly feeling more 10 . She even turned in a circle to show us how the skirt flared (展开)!
Before Barbara left, she said, "Thank you for making me feel forty years younger today."

Last week I finished a class at a middle school, receiving some meaningful answers after I asked the students what they would tell their parents about money.
Max said he would say: "Dear Mom. I need to give you some advice on money. I need more allowances(零用钱)! Many teenagers had the same answer: As a teacher, I advise on a few allowances and more if the kid helps with housework. Now that the kids are in middle school. it's time to think about paying them for doing something. My son missed a lot of school when he was in middle school so I offered the down payment(分期付款)on a car if he wouldn't miss any school as a high school student and the result was that he finally got the car.
Grace wanted to tell her mom. "Only buy what we need." Spending wisely and saving money is a good idea for all the students. The idea of thinking carefully about spending is exactly what I want to make them know in class. but they learn more at home. Teenagers look at their parents' spending habits, and they develop the same habits. So watch your behavior(行为)!
Nikola's advice is helpful to all parents — "Mom and Dad, I think I should take part in financial(财务的)activities more so that I can know how to deal with money when I grow up."
Remember, your kids watch everything you do especially when it is about money, so do it right, pointing them in right direction.
When you have a cold drink in summer, you may get a toothache. If eating ice cream or drinking cold drinks make your eh hurt, it could be a kind of protein(蛋白质) called TRPC5 at work.
A new study which came out on March 26 answered a long-lasting question about our teeth—why do cold food and drinks make our teeth hurt? Actually, when you feel a toothache, it's because a kind of protein feels a drop in temperature and sounds an alarm to your brain. The research team found this protein 15 years ago. But they didn't know where in the body it felt the temperature. Now they know it—it's in a kind of tooth cell.
David Clapham from the research team explained how our teeth sensed cold. When someone is eating ice cream, for example, cells with TRPC5 in teeth feel a change in temperature and send a signal to the brain. As a result, you will be sensitive to the cold food and feel pains. I is also found that here will be more TRPC5 if your teeth are worn away(磨损), so a great way to prevent a toothache is to treat it gently. If you don't know what to do, the following tips can help you out;
●Don't brush your teeth too hard. Brush up and down to keep them clean and strong.
●Say goodbye to soda and sticky candy, because they can wear your teeth away.
●Stop grinding(磨) your teeth. That will make your teeth more sensitive(敏感的) to coldness.
If all of these don't work, go to the dentist!
Emma has a bad pain in her head. It's hard for her to move it. Noah doesn't feel good because his body temperature is 38.3 degrees Celsius. William says his movements hurt because he has pains that make him tired, weak, and sleepy. Luna's throat hurts. It's worse when she swallows or talks. Jack doesn't like it when he's looking forward to a delicious meal after getting over a cold and then realizes he can't taste or smell. | A. Taking warm baths or showers can ease your body pains and make you feel better. Heating blankets might also help with some physical pains. B. Using warm salty water as a mouthwash can ease a sore throat. Honey can also help sore throats get better quicker. C. If your fever is not too high (less than 38.5℃), you don't need medical treatment. Just make sure to drink lots of water and rest a lot. A warm bath (around 37℃) can help lower your body temperature. D. Cut fresh ginger (生姜) into small pieces. Press them lightly and put them in a cup of water. Boil it and drink this soup 3 to 4 times a day to ease your cough. E. If you have a headache, put a cold pack on the front of your head. Keep it there for 15 minutes and then take a 15-minute break. F. Apple vinegar (醋) is an amazing natural solution for loss of taste and smell. It can help reduce discomfort and speed up recovery. |
Nowadays, many people have realized the importance of leadership(领导)skills. Poor leaders may cause many problems. But good leaders do better in solving problems than poor ones. Without good leaders, problems can't be solved. What's more, good leaders are good at cooperating with others. Usually, they are good listeners as well. But being good leaders isn't easy. So let me give you some suggestions to help you become a good leader.
Maybe nobody teaches you how to be a good leader, but you can learn it on your own. Read books about great leaders from home and abroad. By reading, you can learn a lot from their experiences and find out their secrets of success. Then you will be more confident of being a good leader.
Learn from students' leaders in your school. There is no doubt that those leaders who are popular with the students in your school must have their advantages over others. Take an active part in the activities organized by the excellent leaders and learn from them at once. Then you will know the answer.
Find the students that have the same interests as you have and start a club. Activities should be organized regularly in the club. When the members in your club have trouble in solving problems, you should communicate with them and find out the causes of the problems. Maybe what you have learned can be helpful. After the problems are solved, you can share pleasure with them. As time passes by, you will get more trust like those popular leaders. Sooner or later, you will be a good leader.
Get started before it's too late! As long as you keep trying, you will develop your leadership skills.
A. Learn from books. B. Be more strict with yourself. C. Practice what you have learned. D. It's not necessary for you to take notes. E. So good leaders are very important. F. In short, being a good leader needs courage and practice. G. Don't you want to know why they are so successful? |
