I grew up in a small town in Minnesota. There I had some very good friends. We played together happily. But it was such a small town that life there seemed very1. I always wanted to leave there and go to a(an)2city. When I was 15, my dream3came true. My parents told me that we would move to California soon.
After I moved to California, however, I found life there wasn't as good as I had4. I suffered some serious culture shock in the first months. There was everything I had ever5, such as beaches, mountains, amusement parks and sunshine! All of those6were rather new to me and very exciting to me at first. But7time went by, I realized that8of them was making me happy. I didn't want to ride the biggest roller coaster(过山车), go to the best shopping mall, or go to the most beautiful9to enjoy sunshine or swim. I really10my friends in my hometown.
We often take what we have for granted. Please cherish what you have and be happy every day.

I've been smoking ever since I was very young. To be honest, I never considered what could happen to my body if I kept smoking. I just knew that I couldn't help smoking, especially when I felt very anxious. One day, I started to notice that it was getting harder and harder for me to do simple things like walking. Several months later, I couldn't get through a conversation without coughing.
Finally, I went to see a doctor. He told me I had COPD(慢肺阻). He said I had to stop smoking. I wasn't sure I could make it. To be honest, I wasn't sure I wanted to. He said that it would get harder to breathe if I didn't stop smoking, and that one day I might have to be seriously ill in bed. That made me so scared enough that I decided to give a try. However, after a few days, I failed. I knew it would be harder when I spent a lot of time with my best friend who was a smoker.
Then I tried again. That time, I tried the patch(戒烟贴), which made a big difference. It took almost 5 months, but I was finally able to stop smoking. I could feel comfortable and hopeful. My son has also been a huge help. He has been a non- smoker for almost ten years now. Whenever I wanted a cigarette, I would give him a call. He helped me remember why I had to stop smoking.
What should you do while you are away from home? Here comes some advice.
If you are leaving children or your husband/ wife at home, make sure they have everything they might need from you while you are away. Freeze a few favorite dishes so that they can taste your cooking while you are away. Leave a photo of yourself with little children, who will be happy to see your face each day. Leave instructions with the children's caregiver(看护者) for everything from snacks to bedtime habits.
Always let your family know where you will be. Give them flight numbers, hotel names and addresses, as well as a schedule of your activities. Plan for a way for them to reach you when necessary. Make sure they have the phone number for the places you're staying at. If you will go hiking or camping, schedule regular check-in time for calling your family.
Clean out the fridge. Toss out the food that was left over as well as any items that will expire(过期) before you return. Keep the vegetables for at least one or two meals in the fridge so that you won't have to go on a last-minute shopping trip as soon as you get home.
Buy timers for three or four lights throughout the house and set them to go off at different time. This will help the house look as if there were people in it while you're away. You should also plan for a friend or neighbor to cut the grass if you will be away for a long time. Maybe thieves break into your house if it looks uncared for.
Social media plays an important role in our lives. We check our social
media accounts(账户) such as emails and Facebook almost every day. Lately, people like posting pictures just for the purpose of getting others' attention through their "flowers", no matter whether these pictures are good or not. Recently, I was very annoyed with these types of posts, so I decided to stop using social media for one week.
After not using social media for a week, I can honestly say that everything has changed. Before last week, I used to check Facebook more than five times a day, as well as of my other social accounts, and I couldn't understand why I did that. Now I check Facebook much less.
People are so obsess(迷恋的) with posting pictures that have no meaning to them just for the purpose of posting something online. Whenever I look at Instagram, all of the comments on pictures are the same. People depend on how many "likes" they get on what they post as an achievement. I just want to say, "None of it matters!" As I start to fully understand this now, I wonder why I have social media if all of this annoys me so much. But then I realize that I actually post meaningful things that my friends enjoy, and to me, that's more important than getting "likes" on a picture.
Maybe as a society, we are using social media wrongly. I think we sometimes forget that social media helps us contact with people who are far away from us. I think it's a beautiful thing that I am able to go on Facebook and feel connected with people that I don't have the opportunity of seeing every single day anymore.

When I was a junior high school student, my family received call. It said that my grandfather had a heart attack and (send) to the hospital just now. We set out (immediate) to be with him. When we arrived, we learned his operation was over and he was in the ICU, so we headed straight to the ICU. At the door, I felt too nervous to enter. Then I realized that a doctor came close to me and walked me step by step. She told me (relax) because my grandfather would be OK soon. Then her (explain) about the tubes that were coming out of his body was very clear. What she said gave me strength and made me feel (peace). As she said, my grandfather gradually made a full recovery and now he has good health.
I don't remember what she looked like, I remember she cared about a teenage girl was a little afraid to see her grandfather in the hospital. Her kindness passed beyond her patients to (they) families. It has been seven years, but her simple act still makes a lasting impression me.
