Last summer holidays, my classmates and I helped with a charity show. Its aim was to raise money for those children 1 couldn't go to school in poor areas. It was very meaningful for us to do it.
We did a lot for that. I felt happy when I 2 to be the host. Though it was exciting, I was 3 nervous because of the TV cameras that I couldn't sleep all night. I knew that lots of people 4 to watch the show, also there would be a large audience in 5 front of the TV. As a few famous stars would come to the show, one of my duties 6to introduce each of them. I also had some 7 things to do. So I often worked 8 morning to night. It was hard work,9 I was happy. I practiced a lot before the show. I had to remember all the words and do 10 right at the same time. At first, I thought I would never be able to do it better. I kept 11 myself not to be nervous.
Slowly everything became easier. The big day came very fast. 12 people came to the show. They donated money and materials. And the local business also gave 13 a lot of support. How generous they are! After the show, we sent the donations to those poor children. Soon they wrote back. They were really grateful to us. I was very proud14 I could help them. I hope15people will always help them.
One of the worst feelings in the world is trying your hardest at something but still getting a bad result. In the case of schoolwork, studying for hours and bringing home 1 grades may make you feel hopeless or helpless, but it does 2 sometimes. If you are having such a problem, make sure to 3 your old study habits or methods and after some time, you'll be amazed by the results.
The most important rule is to act 4. Don't sit around and let it become worse, and don't ignore it. Instead, admit that you need the change and go in search of it as quickly as possible. The faster you face up to the5, the faster you can find a way out and see some results. Make sure that you study 6 by reviewing your textbooks and 7 notes while you study.
If you are still disappointed with your grades, then it is time to figure out where you are going wrong exactly. Look over the8 and assignments to see if you are having trouble with a particular kind of questions. Request an appointment with the9 and use this time to discuss your work and get his/her 10 as well.
Dealing with discouraging grades is something that every student will face at one time or another. It won't be fun, but take a realistic look at your study habits and your performance on past exams. Figure out where you are having trouble and devote yourself to fixing these problems.
Paul and Jason were brothers who lived and worked on neighbouring farms. For 35 years they farmed side by side, sharing machinery and goods as needed, without a single problem.
However, one autumn, things changed. It began with a tiny disagreement about a horse, which grew into a major difference. The difference led to angry words, followed by weeks of silence between the two brothers.
One morning there was a knock on Paul's door. He opened it and saw a builder holding his toolbox." I'm looking for a few days' work," the builder said." Are there any jobs here I could help with?"
"Yes," answered Paul, extremely pleased to see the builder." I do have a job for you. Look at that farm across the creek(小溪). That's my brother's farm. That creek used to be a grass field, but last week my brother dug a path from the river and made the creek. But I'll go him one better. See that pile of wood? I want you to build me a fence, two metres tall, so 1 won't need to see him anymore."
The builder said thoughtfully." I think I understand the situation and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you."
Paul had business in town that day and left the builder to his work. When he returned, the builder had just finished his job. Paul was shocked. Instead of a fence there was a bridge, stretching from one side of the creek to the other.
As Paul stood on the bridge, staring in amazement, his younger brother Jason, came across, and took Paul's hand." You are a good man to have built this bridge after all I've done," said Jason.
Then, Paul, with tears in his eyes, said to the builder who was packing his bag to go," Thank you so much. Please stay. I have much more for you to do."
"I'd love to." the builder said quietly," but, I have many more bridges to build."

b. Jason dug the creek.
c. The brothers became angry with each other,

Dear Aunt Aggie, I'm having a problem with my classmate, Joan, at school. The other day I wrote an email to another classmate, Beth, in which I said something about Joan that perhaps wasn't very nice. Unluckily, when Beth was writing back to me, she sent it to Joan@163.com, which is Joan's email address! Now Joan is really angry with me and won't talk to me, and Beth is unhappy as well. She has said sorry to me a hundred times already, but the harm is done. I feel bad, because I never would have said those things to Joan's face, but how do I get her to forgive(谅解) me? What should I do? Joe |

Dear Joe, This problem is more common than you might think! Email is very useful, but also very dangerous, as you don't know where your message might end up! First of all, you should say sorry right away to Joan. Explain that it was a mistake, and that you didn't mean to hurt her feelings. It may take time for her to be able to forgive you, but that's up to her. Then you might want to do something nice for her. Perhaps send her some flowers to show that you're truly sorry. Also, you should remember that old saying:" If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." And good luck! Aggie |
Sometimes, people are not clear about what kind of food is healthy and what kind of food may do harm to our health. The food guide describes six main food groups: meat, dairy, grains, fruit and vegetables. The USDA also suggests how much of each food group is proper to eat daily. Though this guide was prepared by the US government, it is very useful for people all over the world.
Doctors everywhere suggest people eat more grains, fruit and vegetables and less meat and dairy food. When parents have poor eating habits, their children usually do, too. After all, children eat the same way as their parents. Then they will develop good eating habits. Doctors suggest parents give their children healthier food such as fruit, vegetables and juice.
Everyone wants to live a long, healthy life. We know that food we eat affects us in different ways. For example, doctors believe that fruit and vegetables can really protect people from many different diseases. On the other hand, animal fat can easily cause diseases.
A. The USDA has prepared a food guide to help people learn about which kind of food is the healthiest to eat. B. When parents eat healthy food, their children will learn to enjoy it, too. C. Change our eating habits now and we will enjoy many years of healthy living. D. Eating healthily is important for children as well as for their parents E. The last group is fats and sweets. |
