Everyone needs friends. We all like to1 close to someone.2 is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do things with.3, sometimes we need to be alone. We don't always want people 4. But we would feel lonely if we 5had a friend.
No two people are just the same.6 friends don't get on well. That doesn't mean that they no longer (不再) like 7. Most of the time they will make up and become 8again.
Sometimes friends move away (搬走) . Then we feel very 9. We miss them very much, but we can 10and write to them. It could be that we would never see them again. And we can 11new friends. It is surprising to find out 12we like new people when we get to know them.
There's good 13for people who have friends. They live longer than people who don't. Why? It could be that they are 14. Being happy helps you to stay well. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares. If someone cares about you, you take 15care of yourself.
Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955. He grew up in Seattle, Washington. Bill Gates was named William Henry after his father and grandfather. He was a very clever boy. His favourite subjects at school were science and maths. When people asked him what he wanted to be in the future, he always said, "A scientist."
When he was 13 years old, Bill started to play with computers. At that time, computers were very large machines. Once he was interested in a very old computer. He and some of his friends spent lots of time doing unusual things with it. In the end, they worked out a software programme with the old machine. Bill sold it for 4, 200 dollars when he was only 17.
In 1973, Bill went to Harvard University. At Harvard, he developed the BASIC language for the first microcomputer. In his third year, he left Harvard to work for a company called Microsoft. On Saturday morning, every boy in town was happy, except Tom Sawyer. Tom's aunt said he had to paint the fence (围栏) because Tom had caused some trouble. The fence was thirty yards long and three yards high. He knew other boys would laugh at him. He didn't want to become a joke, so he thought hard. Then he came up with an idea and picked up his brush to start the work,
A moment later, Ben Rogers came with an apple in his hand.
"I'm going swimming, " said Ben. "Do you want to come? Oh, you have to work, don't you?"
Tom got a little angry, but soon he had a wonderful idea.
"Of course not. I'm enjoying myself. Does a boy get a chance to paint a fence like this every day?"Tom said and went on painting.
Ben thought about this. He was watching Tom's every move and was getting more and more interested.
After a while, he said, "Tom, will you let me do some painting?""No way, you see, Aunt Polly wants it to be done properly. I'm the only one that can do it right.
"Oh, please, Tom, "begged (恳求) Ben. "Ill be really careful. Let me try. I'll give you half my apple in return. Wait, I'll give you all of it. "
"That's a deal," said Tom. "But you must be careful. "He gave Ben his brush with worry on his face but joy in his heart. He started to eat Ben's apple.
All day, boys passed by and wanted to paint. When Ben got tired, Billy began to paint. He gave Tom his favourite kite. Then Johnny gave him twelve marbles (弹珠) , and so on.
That afternoon, Tom got lots of "treasure", and the fence got three coats of paint. Aunt Polly was so pleased when she saw the painted fence that she gave him a large cake!
How much do you know about school life in Singapore (新加坡) ?
In Singapore, many middle school students spend a lot of time on their studies. People always think that good schooling is the ticket to success (成动) 、So, many of these students try their best in their exams. They have a hot of homework every day and exams are usually a big problem to them. Sometimes, a few even have to go to evening classes after school.
Schools have many activities outside school hours. The students can join in sports and games, music and dance, swimming and rock-climbing. They also join in community service (社区服务) .
In their free time, most students like to listen to pop music. Hollywood movies, Hong Kong and Singapore movies are very popular, too. Some of them also spend their free time searching the Internet, e-mailing their friends and playing computer games. They sometimes go to cafés, fast-food restaurants, shopping centers and big bookstores.
So life for middle school students in Singapore is not easy but rich and colourful.
—They are (讨论) how to celebrate my grandfather's birthday.
I like to get up late, so my idealschool starts at9 a. m. It finishes at 3p.m. , so we will have lots of time forafter-school activities. There is a big dining hall.
We have an hour for lunch. We eatlunch and chat there. We can also listen to pop music in the hall. We eat fruitand vegetables every day. We have Maths every day because I think Maths is veryinteresting to us. I love computers, so we have Computer Studies every day. Wewear school uniforms, but we do not wear ties. The classes are quite small. There are 15 students in each class.
There is a park on one side of ourschool and a shopping mall on the other. We have a big library with lots ofuseful books. We also have a tennis court and a swimming pool.
There are lots of clubs andafter-school activities. We only have half an hour of homework every day, andwe do not do homework at weekends. Every month, we go on a school trip to amuseum or a theatre.
April 26 is a special day for friends. It is "Hug (拥抱) a Friend Day". Can you guess how people celebrate it? That's right. Friends hug one another, in a warm and friendly way!
Why do we need this day? Giving a hug can show our love, support or even just mean "hello" or "goodbye". It can make a person feel happier and warmer, or even bring him better health by taking stress (压力) away. And a hug doesn't cost anything. So why not hug your friends?
However, it can also get you in trouble. Ryan Blackmon, a middle school student in North Carolina, US, was fighting with another student, and a teacher pulled them apart (拉开) . When she finished, Ryan said "thank you" and gave her a hug. This did not make the teacher feel happy. Instead, she angrily took Ryan's arm and took him to an office. Then school officials said Ryan must say sorry to the teacher.
Why did she get so angry over a hug? First of all, Ryan is a boy and his teacher is a woman. In that situation (状况) , she might think Ryan's hug showed the wrong kind of love. Also, a student hugging a teacher shows that they are friends, on an equal (平等的) level. That might have hurt her feeling of authority (权威) .
So be careful who you hug, and how you hug them! The best way is just to ask first, or to say, "Give me a hug!" From the person's reaction, you'll decide to hug or not to hug.
