"Goodbye, kitchen!" As Kate whispered, she walked slowly through the empty house one more time.
"Kate! It's time for1to leave." said Mum. Before Kate got into the car, she couldn't help staring at their house again.
After they arrived at the new house, "So, what do you think of our new house?" Mum asked.
"Not as nice as our old one," Kate replied in a(n)2voice.
Mum pulled her into a hug." Kate, I know you3our old house, but we can't go back to it. Why don't you take a look at our new house? Maybe you'll find 4. special." she suggested.
Kate sighed and went out of the house. The yard was big with one huge tree. There were wooden steps nailed up the side of it, so she5the tree. On the second-to-last step, her foot slipped* as the board shook6she grabbed* for the last rung*.There she had a clear view of the7, especially the bedroom with a window seat.
Suddenly a large hole in the tree caught her eye. Kate looked inside and found a metal box8a piece of paper in it.
"Dear Adventurous One: if you have found this9, you managed to survive the shaking second-to-last step on this tree. (I kept meaning to fix that!)
"Now I shall tell you10I leave you in this note. I leave you my tidy room. You can see it from here. L leave you my window seat for reading. I also leave you this wonderful tree. With all that l leave you, you must be11.
"Leaving this house was one of the hardest things. The only things I can't leave you are the12I made here, such as the happiness with my family. l know you won't need them13you'll be busy making your own. Anyway, I'm going to create my new life at my new home.
"Ellen Cartwright, age 12."
Kate put the note back into the box, and stuck it in her pocket. "The first thing I'm going to do is14 that shaking step." she said as she climbed down. She really15beer new life. After all, this was going to be her house now.
Build a Water Clock
You will need: Make it as follows: Step 1: Use a pushpin to make a hole on the side of a cup, very close to the bottom. This will be the top Put the top cup on another cup (the base cup). And tape then. Place a third cup next to the base. The third cup is called the bottom cup. Step 2: Pour the water into the top cup while covering the hole with your finger. Start a timer as you uncover the hole. Water will flow into the bottom cup. Step 3: When your timer reaches I minute, quickly draw a line on the bottom cup to mark the top of the water. Make a line every minute. The water will flow slowly as the cup empties. Stop timing when the stream is just a drip. Step 4: Number your marks, starting with "1" from the lowest line. Empty the bottom cup and repeat steps 2-3. Check your marks against the timer. Correct them if necessary. |
The city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, has hundreds of Japanese restaurants. A world away, in Hamamatsu, a city on the east coast of Japan, there are many places to buy and eat Brazilian food. Why is each country's food so popular in the other? The answer to this question dates back to the early 20t century.
In 1908, people from Japan began to immigrate* to Brazil to work on coffee plantations*. Many of these Japanese immigrants (called nikkei) moved to Sao Paulo and settled in a neighborhood called Liberdade. Like many immigrants, they spoke their native language and prepared traditional foods from their home country. Over time, the nikkei opened many Japanese markets and restaurants in the Liberdade district. Today, this neighborhood has one of the largest Japanese communities outside of Japan. Restaurants sell ramen noodles and sushi everywhere. Also, each weekend, there is a large street market. Street sellers sell traditional Japanese goods and foods. The event is popular with both city residents and tourists.
In the 1980s - three generations after the first nikkei settled in Brazil - a reverse immigration began to take place. Over 300,000 Japanese Brazilians, later generations of nikkei, moved to Japan. Many settled in Hamamatsu. Most Japanese Brazilians spoke only their native language (Portuguese). They also missed the foods and culture of Brazil. As a result, all over Hamamatsu, food shops and restaurants have sold traditional Brazilian foods since then.
Today it's possible to eat excellent Japanese food in Sao Paulo and traditional Brazilian food in Hamamatsu. Whether travelling through Brazil or Japan, it's worth visiting these two cities to experience the tastes and cultures of their unique immigrant communities.
American researchers from Washington University say they have invented a method that could produce oxygen and fuel with salty water on Mars. It would support future human exploration activities on Mars.
The method operates with electrolysis. The machine the researchers created is called an electrolyzer. The researchers say it can separate salty water into oxygen and hydrogen gases. Oxygen would be needed for humans to breathe, and hydrogen could be used to fuel spaceships and machines.
The method is practical because scientists have already found that Mars once had huge amounts of water, and that the planet probably has much water today. But most of the water is thought to exist in the form of ice because of the cold weather. So the research team notes that any water that is not frozen is almost surely full of salt.
The new method is cheap and environment-friendly. It can take salty water directly and change it into oxygen and hydrogen. However, the usual process can be difficult, costly and harmful to the environment. It requires the salt to be removed first.
Compared with the method used by NASA (the.US space agency), the new method is more effective. The NASA machine is designed to change carbon dioxide(CO2) from Mars into oxygen, which has been tested on Mars. The lead researcher on the new method said the new method could produce 25 time more oxygen than the NASA method, while using the same amount of power. It can also produce hydrogen fuel, which the NASA method cannot. However, the new method hasn't been experimented on Mars yet.
In a news release, the engineering team also suggested the new method could even find valuable uses on the earth. It could possibly be used to change salt water into oxygen and hydrogen through "seawater electrolysis". It may also be able to provide oxygen to researchers exploring new environments in the deep sea.
The dead mother lay cold, leaving her daughter Maggie behind. Her neighbours ran to her little house but no one wanted to take Maggie. Two years before, a fall from a window had injured her back and she had been unable to leave behind her bed since." Take her to the poor house for children," said a farmer.
Joe Thompson, a childless shoe maker who happened to pass by, stopped and said to him, "It's a terrible thing to put her there."
"O, sir!" Maggie cried out, "Don't leave me here alone!"
Though Joe Thompson looked rough", ne was kind-hearted." No, dear, "he answered," you won't be left alone." Lifting her in his arms, Joe went home.
"______________ shouted Mrs Thompson upon his return home.
"Be gentle." Joe said. He carried Maggie into a small room. Then he stood in front of his wife. Usually he got out of his cold wife's way, Kept s1lent when she fired up.
"Nobody wanted the poor child." Joe said.
His wife shouted back, "Why don't you take her to the poor house?"
"Janel" cried the shoe maker, "It's a small thing for us to keep this poor motherless little one for a single night; to make her life comfortable for a single night!"
His voice shook, he turned his head away, so that his wet eyes couldn't be seen. Mrs. Thompson was shocked, without answering, but a soft feeling came to her heart. "Look at her kindly, Jane." said Joe and then left.
When back home, he looked through the window. Maggie's eyes were fixed upon his wife; but he saw nothing of her usual coldness, or rudeness.
After dinner, Mrs. Thompson prepared some bread and softened it with milk for Maggie. The hungry child ate with great pleasure and gave her a look of thankfulness that awoke old human feelings which had been slumbering* in her heart for years.
"I don't mind keeping her a day or two longer, she is so weak."Mrs. Thompson said to her husband the next morning.
In fact, after a week, Mrs. Thompson left all thought of sending Maggie to the poor house. She carried her in her heart as well as in her arms. As for Joe Thompson, an angel had come into his house, disguised as a sick, helpless child, and filled the cold hopeless house with the sunshine of love.

It was one of (令人惊异的) moments she had experienced.
Pahlsson screamed so (大声地) that her daughter came running from the house. "She thought I had hurt (我自己)."said Pahlsson.
Sixteen years earlier, Pahlsson had removed the diamond ring (煮,烧) a meal. When she wanted to put the ring back on later, it was gone. She thought that one of her three daughters had picked it up, but the girls said they hadn't. Pahisson and her husband (搜寻) the kitchen checked every (角落), but turned up mothing. (终于), she gave up.
Pahlsson and her husband thought maybe the ring (扫) into kitchen rubbish and spread over the garden, where it remained (直到) the carrot's top accidentally grew through it. For Pahlsson, its return is magical.
