Longago, people lived happily under the rule of a king. The people of the country were very happy as they led a very rich life with a great deal of wealth and 1troubles.
Once, the king decided to go visiting places of historical centres at places far away. He decided to travel 2to meet this people. People far away were very happy to have a talk with their king. They were 3that their king had a kind heart.
After several weeks of travel, the king 4the palace. He was quite happy that he had visited many historical centres and found his people leading a happy and rich life. However, he was unhappy with one thing.
He had great pain in his feet as it was his first time to cover a long way by foot. He told his ministers that the roads weren't comfortable and that they were very stony. He said that he was very much 5 the people who had to walk along those roads every day as it would be 6 for them too! So he ordered his servants to cover the roads in the whole country 7 leather sothat the people of his country can walk 8 .
The king's ministers were surprised to hear his order 9 it would mean that thousands of cows would have to be 10 in order to get enough leather. And it would cost a huge amount of money also.
Finally, a wise minister came to the king and said that they 11 do that because he had came up with 12 idea. The king asked what it was. The minister said, "Instead of covering the 13 with leather, why don't you just havea piece of leather cut in right shape to cover your feet?"

Some people may think thatstudents who study abroad have more time for fun and less homework. But in fact, Grade 12 studentsin Canada are just as busy as students in China. In Canada, students have to work hard to all the tests and homework. To relax oneself from the important courses, like math and English, students will often choose one or two elective courses in the last year of high school. They are usually easier and have more fun.
Take me as an example —- I chose an interesting course, cooking and health. This course is to help students develop a healthy lifestyle and diet. The biggest fun of this course is thatstudents can experience cooking. I believethisis the reason why there're a large number of students on the waiting list. Usually, there are one ortwo food labs every month. Teachers always let students decide what they want to cook. Students are divided into four groups with six people, and we enjoy the cooking time a lot.
After attending this class for more than three months, I believe it's not as easy as others think it isbecause it requires basicknowledge of science, life skills and practice.
Some peoplemight think they are just for fun and don'tneedto be taken seriously. But I believe it is a great way to get relaxed from the other heavy schoolwork and I do learn a lot from those electivecourses.
A new study warns that about thirty percent of the world's people may not have enough water by the year 2025. A private American organization called Population Action International did the new study. It says more than three-hundred-thirty-five-million people lack enough water now. The people liveintwenty-eight countries. Mostof the countries are in Africaand the Middle East.
P-A-I researcher Robert Engelman says by the year 2025, about three-thousand-million people may lack water. At least 18 more countries are expected tohave serious water problems. The need for waterkeeps booming. Yet the amount of water on Earth stays the same.
Mr. Engelman says the population in countries that lack water is growing faster thanin other parts of the world. He says population growthin these countries will continue to increase. The report says lack of water in the future may result in several problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water often means drinking waters not safe. Mr. Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of diseases, which are carried in water. Lackof water may alsoresult in more international conflict. Countries may have to fight for water in the future. Some countries nowget sixty percent of their freshwater from other countries. This is true of Egypt, the Netherlands,Cambodia, Syria, Sudan, and Iraq. And the report says lack of water would lower the ability of developing to improve their economies. This is because new industries often need a large amount of water when they are beginning.
The Population Action International study gives several ways to solve the water problem. One way, it says, is to find ways to use water for more thanone purpose. Another way is to teach people to be careful not to waste water. Athird one is to use less water ofagriculture.
The report also says long-term way to solve the water problem must include controls on population growth. It says countries cannot have clean water unless they slow population growth by cutting down the number of children people have.
I'm from Orange County, California, where I had thepleasure and honor of serving asa Newport Beach oceanlifeguard. Whenever I could, I got shifts working the Point. The Point was known for its great rip currents. Now and then itcould be very dangerous.
So, late in ashift, I was working Tower 15. Two streets tomy right was another guard namedMike, working Tower 17. Hecalled me, "Hey, I got a couple of kids. Igotta go and give them awarning. Keep an eye on us." I said, "Sure."
And sure enough, as soon as he hung up the phone, a rip current was coming up quicklyunder these two kids, and they were getting drawnout. All I saw was two small noses movingup and down in the water. They were in great danger. Mike was rushing quickly toward thesea.
By now, the mother of the two kids realized what was happening. She was crying crazily.I was also very worried and started running toward her, butbefore I was even halfway there, Mike reached the kids.
Mike swam sideways out of the rip current into the clear water and started bringingthemin. When I reached their mother, Mikewas in waist-deep water. The kids were so tired andafraid that they could not swam back by themselves, so Mikewas carrying them, oneundereach arm.
I turned to their mom, "Hey, it's OK. They're safe." I saw her stop crying and slowlystartto calm down.
She turned back andgot her first good look at Mike. He had a number of really terribletattoos(纹身)on his strong arms and back, and his headshowed the long scars he got froma broken beer bottle. Then a crazy thing happened. I saw a new kind of panic wash over heras though there was some new dangerous thing would happen to take away her kids'lives. Sherushed up to Mike, immediately caught her kids and walked away. Not even a thank-you.
Mike just looked at me and his tattoos on the arms, made a face, and ran back to his tower. Iwatched him with respect and came back to guard my own tower.
If any other guard had worked 17 that night, including me, there would be a veryreal chance that that mother wasn't going home with both her kids.
