Football scarves, shirts and...eggshell art?A retired schoolteacher is making mascot memorabilia(吉祥物纪念品) from eggshell, skillfully crafted by hand.
Nguyen Thanh Tam, 67 years old, spends hours every day making the models. He is driven by his soccer enthusiasm shared by millions across Vietnam glued to the World Cup.
The soccer tournament kicked off in Russia a few weeks ago. Most of his tiny statues are of the tournament mascot, a wolf named Zabivaka. The wolf wears big sports glasses and is kicking a soccer ball. Tam also has plans for models of soccer heroes Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Though not widespread in Vietnam, using eggshell in art is not unheard of. Traditional fine works often feature in laid eggshell that is used to replace white paint.
Tam first developed the unique hobby around New Year in 2002. He was looking for the right material to make a statue with his 13yearold students. He discovered that an eggshell perfectly displayed Saint Nick's round belly. He eventually married his passion(酷爱) for crafts and soccer. He started making World Cup mascots during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Now he has about 1, 000 of the small statues in his apartment. Some celebrate the 2016 Rio Olympics and the Euro 2016 football tournament in France. Others are of celebrities like Charlie Chaplin, Barack Obama and Gangnam Style's PSY. He also does birds and animals. He has his pigrelated series to mark the Year of the Pig in 2019.
Tam says the biggest challenge is to find the right egg shape to fit the creation, so he has expanded beyond chicken eggs to include ostrich(鸵鸟) and quail(鹌鹑) eggs. He has also widened his egg artworks by using up all the yolks(蛋黄) and whites he used to throw away.
Tam doesn't sell the delicate dolls, preferring instead to keep them on display to impress his visitors. He has already received a nod from Vietnam's record center for the most eggshell art created, but he has a global ambition." I hope one day my eggshell art will be recognized as a world record, "he said with a smile.
If you're homeless and looking for a temporary shelter in Hawaii's capital, expect a visit from a robotic police dog that will scan your eyes to make sure you don't have a fever. That's just one of the ways public safety agencies are starting to use Spot, a new robot that runs around with quick movement.
The police officials experimenting with the four-legged machines say they're just another tool to keep emergency responders out of harm's way as they search for dangers.
Joseph O'Neal, an officer of the Honolulu Police Department, said the robot has protected officers, shelter staff and residents by scanning body temperatures between mealtimes at a shelter where homeless people could quarantine (隔离) and get tested for COVID-19. The robot is also used to remotely interview individuals who have tested positive.
The company that makes the robots, Boston Dynamics, says it's trying to do a good job of explaining to the public and its customers what Spot can and cannot do. "One of the most difficult tasks is accurately explaining the state of the technology to people who have never had personal experience with it," said Michael Perry, vice president of the company.
There are roughly 500 Spot robots now in the wild. Perry said they're commonly used by companies to check dangerous areas. Spot is also used to monitor construction sites, mines and factories, equipped with whatever sensor is needed for the job.
It's still mostly controlled by humans, though all they have to do is tell it which direction to go and it can climb stairs or cross over rough areas. It can also operate autonomously, but only if it's already memorized a road and there aren't too many surprise obstacles (障碍). "The first value that most people see in the robot is taking a person out of a dangerous situation," Perry said.
The twilight zone (朦胧地带) contains the largest and least explored fish stocks (储备) of the world's oceans. Ranging from just below 200 metres to 1,000 metres deep, it is an interface between the well-studied sea life in the sunlit zone above and the ecosystems of the darkest territory below. It has a major role in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it for centuries or longer. The twilight zone is also known to the largest migration on Earth. Huge numbers of fishes and zooplankton (浮游动物) move hundreds of metres towards the surface each night to feed, before withdrawing back down at dawn.
Yet the zone is poorly understood — physically, biogeochemically and ecologically. Even the number of organisms that live there remains a mystery, let alone their diversity and function.
It is alarming, then, that this vast ocean domain is at risk in three ways-even before any of the potential consequences are understood. First, the world's growing population has an increasing need for food. Second, sea-floor mining for minerals and metals could release waste into the region. And third, climate change is varying temperature, acidification and oxygen levels in ways that are likely to affect life there.
The twilight zone is hard Io study. Its organisms are difficult to sample and analyse, being thinly distributed, almost invisible and often fragile. They also live at pressures of up to 100 atmospheres, which poses problems for laboratory-based investigations.
Critics might argue that waters near coasts and above shelves are more deserving of study, given the huge environmental pressures there, as well as their importance to societies. And, of course, they need attention. Sadly, however, it is too late to avoid widespread environmental damage to these inshore regions. Instead, research efforts and local policies must aim at minimizing the worst effects.
By contrast, the twilight zone is almost left in its original condition. Moreover, the majority of it lies beyond national administration. This makes it of common interest and responsibility, and means that global agreement is necessary to manage it.

I'm a second-year student of Coventry University. For more than a year, I have been volunteering for SHOUT, a text-based 1 health support service.
This time last year, we all watched the COVID-19 unfold across the country. I had planned to work in the summer vacation, but this became 2 when the first lockdown began. My days became a(n) 3 of watching the news and wishing I could do something. Fortunately, I learned about SHOUT in an email from my university's volunteering team 4 the charity needed more volunteers, due to the increase in 5 they were receiving since the pandemic (流行病) began. I applied instantly.
SHOUT volunteers 6 as a listening ear to anyone who needs support, at any time, with their mental health. The service supports them and encourages self-care techniques to keep people 7 during the pandemic. This service was especially important during lockdown, when clinical services were often 8. As volunteers, we never give advice; often our texters just need someone to 9.
My volunteering 10 have had a huge and positive impact on my mental health. I have been able to gain new 11 from gardening to instructing. In a voluntary capacity, the pressure is off. If I'm struggling, my teammates will always encourage me to rest and 12 for a while. And when I'm feeling strong, I can get involved again and 13 other people in their time of need.
The skills I've gained by volunteering have given me the 14 to successfully apply for an internship (实习生) with Coventry University. I strongly believe volunteering has changed my life, and I encourage everyone to 15 opportunities to change theirs too.

It was a privilege for Eloise to have her grandson Josh living with her while he was attending college away from home. Eloise had struggled to keep herself busy since her husband's death three years ago. But having Josh around was the motivation for Eloise to stay active. Now most of her days were spent baking bread and cookies or with friends and neighbors.
When Eloise returned from a get-together with her friends one evening, Josh pointed to a black-and-white picture lying on the table, and said, "Hi, Grandma. I found this in my closet. Is that you and Granddad?" Eloise looked at the picture and laughed quietly. "Oh, that was a long time ago. I must have overlooked it when I was cleaning to make room for your things."
"That's your granddad and me before we were married. We met at a party. I loved to dance, and he was a good dancer," Eloise smiled, enjoying the memories that came flooding back.
"After we got married, we rarely had time to go dancing. But every once in a while, after the children went to bed, we'd pull out the record player and dance in the backyard under the stars."
Leaning back in his chair, Josh appeared to be enjoying the story. "Wow, Granddad was quite a romantic guy!"
"Yeah. He was very romantic. I still miss him dearly." Eloise shook her head, attempting to get rid of the lonely feeling that was beginning to form. "Well, it's getting late now. Let's get some sleep." "I've really enjoyed hearing the story about you and Granddad," Josh hugged his grandma. Then he went back to his room.
Two hours ago, Mom called to tell him that the next day would be Grandma's birthday. He eagerly wanted to give a special present to Grandma, but he was short of money. After hearing Grandma's words and knowing their story, he got a brilliant idea in his mind.
