AI is a double-edged sword. It can help us, but also cause us harm. Who is using AI? Is AI replacing humans? What should we do to avoid the risks and dangers that AI might bring?

Artificial intelligence is set to benefit mankind in many ways. It will make everyday tasks easier and bring efficiency to various industries. It might just prove to be one of man's greatest inventions.

And yet, like any other technology,      ▲    . In February 2018, a group of AI experts got together to discuss the possible misuse of AI. What they found was that "Every AI advance by the good guys is an advance for the bad guys, too," according to Quartz.

Their biggest concern was that criminals (罪犯) could use AI for wrongful purposes. One of the areas they looked at was the use of AI to create websites that could be used to steal people's personal information. Another possibility is that AI programs could be taught to hack software and break into computer secure systems.

There are some other concerns as well. It is possible that AI could be used to create fake images and videos. Chinese tech giant Baidu, in fact, has developed a program called Deep Voice that can "clone" anyone's voice by studying a 3.7-second audio sample.

Many leading figures in the tech world have expressed concern about AI. People like Bill Gates and Elon Musk have called for the industry to be more strictly regulated, as there are few laws right now on the use of AI.

However, this is set to change. In March 2018, the European Union plans to set up a group that will discuss the moral and ethical dangers of advanced AI – and hopefully, suggest some regulations that will help us keep it safe for mankind.

Artificial intelligence (人工智能), or AI in short, is the science of giving computers and machines ability to think and work like humans.AI scientists and engineers have made a lot of cool technologies.

AI is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. As a result, facial recognition (识别) is used a lot in the world. Chinese police use this technology to identify criminals (罪犯). Once they caught a criminal when he attended a concert. It also checks the ID of ride-hailing (网约车) drivers and lets people pay for things with a smile.

AI is also used in self-driving cars, which are believed to be the future of driving. Most drivers may wave or nod at passers-by to let them cross the street, but self-driving cars don't have this ability. Car makers are testing a light signal system to help them "speak" to humans. The system can show what self-driving cars will do. For example, if a driverless car is yielding (让路), it will flash two white lights side to side. A rapidly flashing light tells passers-by that the car is about to speed up.

Service Robots also show you how powerful AI is. Imagine this—you come back home from school and your robot housekeeper is waiting for you at the door. After dinner, he teaches you to play the piano, just like a real music teacher. Such thoughts will soon happen in the real world. In the future, more and more service robots will become good home helpers.

AI is so powerful that it can help human beings and even replace us in many jobs.

      A . driving cars B . making people smile C . calling the police D . checking people's information
    2. (2) The underlined word "identify" probably means____________ in Chinese.
      A . 减少 B . 鉴定 C . 消灭 D . 帮助
    3. (3) In the future, a self-driving car may communicate with humans by ______.

On October 25th, 2018, Christie's (佳士得拍卖行) had a very unusual sale. It sold the first piece of artwork created by artificial intelligence for $432,500.

The painting was created by an AI program written by Obvious, an AI research studio in Paris. Soon questions rang through the media: Is this art? Who is the artist? How about the owner? Are machines now creative, too?

All good questions—but too early. The technology is far from advanced (高级的), as Obvious suggested, because the public is completely confused about what AI is, and what it is able to do.

In fact, the painting was just one of the countless artworks AI could produce. It was the team behind Obvious that chose this one. The team first programmed the AI, and then they chose 15,000 paintings to train the software (软件). Connecting the painting with the algorithm (计算程序) was just a clever marketing tool. AI did not produce the painting on its own at all.

Lots of artists are using the same software as Obvious, but none of them are worried about losing jobs because of AI. As they build the machine themselves and work with it every day, they know how limited it is. What interests the artists is to create works together: the way AI lets them go beyond their natural ability.

Artists also laugh at the idea that AI is creative. It certainly creates things, sometimes in new and successful ways, but it does so without a purpose. It is the artist who shapes its output. "You make a fire and it produces interesting shapes, but in the end the fire is not creative. AI is a glorified (被美化的) campfire," said one of the pioneers of using AI in art.

    1. (1) The underlined word "confused" in Paragraph 3 probably means _________.
      A . easy to understand B . angry C . unable to think clearly D . certain
    2. (2) Paragraph 4 mainly talks about ________.
A . what the painting was created for B . how AI learned to paint C . why the painting was connected with the algorithm D . why the painting was not created by AI alone
    3. (3) According to the article, the AI technology makes artists able to __________.
A . paint on the computers B . come up with new ideas C . improve their painting skills D . save time and money
    4. (4) We can learn from the article that the AI technology __________.
A . can produce countless artworks B . requires no programming C . can think for itself D . makes artists lose jobs

What is the future of AI (人工智能)? Will it be a good thing? We asked four students what they think.

I think AI will be more useful in our future lives. It's now used in many fields, like phones and medicine. No one really knows what will happen if machines become smarter than humans. However, I'm sure AI will help us solve many problems.

    —Tina

I am worried that people create something that can be better than themselves. In the near future, AI will develop at a high speed. Humans may be replaced (取代) because AI robots will do lots of human jobs.

    —Bill

I really think that AI will change the way we work, the way we live, and the way we think. Imagine if we could put a CPU (中央处理器) into our brains! Soon we'll be able to improve our math and memory. How exciting!

    —Mary

Think of what's happening right now: Some robots are used to kill animals under human orders. So I think AI will be very dangerous for humans. We need to be careful about what we ask machines to do.

    —John

    1. (1) John thinks that AI will be ____________.
      A . exciting B . surprising C . helpful D . dangerous
    2. (2) Who thinks AI will help us solve many problems?
      A . John. B . Bill. C . Tina. D . Mary.
    3. (3) Bill thinks humans may be replaced because ___________.
