Once, in a small village, lived a family with eight children. Two of the children loved1 very much, but the family was so poor that it was impossible to send 2 of them to study at the art college at the same time. After many discussions, the two boys finally 3 a plan. They would toss (抛) a coin. The loser would go 4 into the mines (煤矿) and, with his earnings (赚的钱),5 his brother studying at the college. Then, when the brother who won the toss finished his studies, after four years, he would support the other brother studying at the 6 .
James won the toss and Jack went down into the mines. James worked with all his heart and his paintings were much 7 than those of most of his teachers, and by the time he 8 , he was beginning to make a lot of money for his paintings.
9 James returned, the family held a big dinner for his great success. Soon after the meal began, James 10 up from his seat to drink a toast (敬酒) to his dear 11 . He said, "Jack, now you can go to the art college and your 12 will come true. I will take care of you."
But Jack said 13 , "Brother, the four years in the mines has done too much to my hands, so it's too 14 . Now I can't even hold a glass."
To show his great love and respect James drew his brother's 15 with fingers towards the sky. He called his drawing The Praying Hands, which became very famous years later.

During my last year of junior high school, our teacher, Mrs. Debby, gave us a quiz (测试). I was a hard-working student and I did well in all subjects. I finished the question successfully until I read the last one: What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?
Of course I thought that must have been a joke. I saw the cleaning woman every day. She was short and about 50 years old. She had dark hair. But how could I know her name? I had never talked with her before. In fact, I'd never even thought about talking to her. I looked at my paper and started to feel rather guilty (内疚的). Finally, I handed in my paper, leaving the last one unanswered.
Before the quiz ended one student asked if the last question would be counted in our grades.
"Of course," the teacher said. "In your life, you will meet many people. They are all important. They deserve (值得) your attention and care, even if all you do is to smile and say hello."
I've never forgotten that lesson. Everyone deserves my attention and I should get to know all of the people who work and live around me. That was, perhaps, the most important lesson in my life. Later, I also learned that the cleaning woman's first name was Hannah.
Pyramid Surprise
Linda and I were born only a few days apart, so every year we plan a birthday party together. This year, our birthday theme (主题) was "Discover the Pyramids".
"What about inviting Mary?" Linda asked.
Mary was lonely, and hadn't made many friends, but she was better at math than anyone else in class.
"Hmm, she wears the same old trousers every day. How could she even afford a party dress?"
After school the next day, Linda handed me a box. "What's that?" I asked.
"My birthday gift from my aunt. I thought it would be nice to give this to Mary," Linda said.
I opened the box. Inside was a gift certificate (礼品券) for our favorite clothes store.
"Wow," I gasped. We both knew how many cute clothes that would buy.
"So, are we going to just hand it to her?"
"How embarrassing that would be!" Linda answered.
She was right. Mary would be totally embarrassed if we gave her money for clothes.
"What if we ask our teacher…"
"Wait a second. I have an idea." Linda said.
"What? What?"
"I'm not going to tell you!"
On the day of our party, Mary arrived, with—no surprise—the very old brown trousers.
We sang, danced and ate biscuits. "And now for the big prize game," Linda said. Big prize? My mouth dropped. This was not in the plan.
"The big prize game is like this: Tom and Sam were building pyramids... If their pyramids had to be 60 feet high, who would finish first?"
A math game. Of course! Linda winked (眨眼示意) at me. No one was surprised when Mary came up with the answer before anyone else and walked off with the box.
The next week, Mary wore a new pair of trousers, and even a new dress. The whole time she had a big smile on her face.
And so did we.
You are always told to wash your hands before you eat. You know you must wash your hands after going to the bathroom. You should wash your hands many times during the day. Do you know how to wash your hands correctly?
Always use soap to wash your hands. After turning on the tap (水龙头) and wetting your hands, you can rub (摩擦) your hands with soap. Soap may not kill all the germs (细菌), but it can wash away the oil on your skin. As the oil is washed away, the germs will leave your hands and go away.
You should wash your hands for 15-20 seconds. How do you know the length (长度) of 15-20 seconds? You can sing ABC Song. By the time you get to the last note, your hands will be clean!
Rub your hands together. You can use one hand to rub the back of the other hand and then exchange two hands. You also need to rub between your fingers. Don't forget to rub under and around your fingernails.
Maybe your hands don't look dirty, but there are germs on them. Germs are too small for you to see. They are on your hands all the time. Many illnesses are caused by germs, so you should often wash your hands.
Now there is a family problem. In fact, we are probably 15 or 16 years old. In their eyes, we are always little ones and often do wrong things. For example, when we need to stay at home alone, they always worry about us and our life without them.
Most parents always think that they have offered the best things to make their children live in a comfortable world. They buy their children pretty clothes, cool shoes and expensive school things. They think that they have done everything that they can do for their dear children.
But why still can't we understand our parents? Does it mean that we still want more material things? No. Actually, what we want is a true family. I think it means a place where we can hide ourselves from the cold world outside. From here, we can get warmth, we can get consolation (安慰), and we can get happiness. And one important thing is that we will become stronger and more confident in the outside world because we know that we have a true family.
I think that parents should sit down to talk with their children to let them know that they have a happy family, so the children and their parents can understand each other better and better. That's what we really need from our parents.
A. What does a true family mean?
B. Nearly every parent says that we never grow up.
C. Then, parents will not treat their children as little ones.
D. Not everything can be transmitted (传达) through materials.
E. In return (作为回报), they only want their children to get good results in the exams.

Save the Sharks!
Many have heard of shark fin soup. This famous and expensive dish is especially popular southern China. But do you realize that you're a whole shark each time you enjoy a bowl of shark fin soup?
When people catch sharks, they cut off fins and throw the sharks back into the ocean. This is not only cruel, but also to the environment. Without a fin, a shark can no longer swim and dies. Sharks are at the top of the food chain in the ocean's ecosystem. their numbers drop too low, it will bring danger to all ocean life. Many believe that sharks can never be endangered because they are the in their food chain. But in fact, around 70 million sharks are caught and in this industry every year. The numbers of some kinds of sharks have fallen by over 90 percent in the last 20 to 30 years.
Environmental protection around the world, such as WildAid and the WWF, are teaching the public about "finning". They have even asked governments to develop laws to stop the sale of shark fins. So , no scientific studies have shown that shark fins are good for health, so why eat them? Help save the sharks!
