The Great Wall Marathon
The Great Wall of China is one of the new wonders of the world, with breathtaking views. In 1998 Soren Rasmussen the idea of organizing a Great Wall marathon. Rasmussen and two running experts chose a route along part of the Great Wall. The marathon has taken place annually in May since 1999. In the initial event, just 292 runners participated but numbers have gone up —in 2015 there were 2,500 runners from over 160 countries.
The Great Wall marathon is considered to be one of the toughest in the world. The part of the route that is actually on the Great Wall includes two exhausting up-and-down sections about 8 km long with 5,146 steps. It's such a steep climb in parts it's hard to walk up—never mind run! The weather is hot and humid, with temperatures of around 30℃, but it can be hotter. Part of the route passes through a dry river bed with huge boulders(巨石). Runners who arrive there later in the day find it challenging because the boulders have become so hot that it's like a sauna.
So who does the marathon? Surprisingly, the marathon attracts both professional and people who want to run for fun or simply do something different. Some runners stop every 10-15 minutes to take photos, chat to the locals and enjoy the scenery! If the thought of doing such a marathon horrifies you, then you can do a half marathon or an 8-km fun run instead.
If you have to work to support yourself through your studies, you needn't think all student jobs have to low-paid, dead-end positions. Opportunities do exist for young people to make some cash during their university years while building up impressive skills and experience to add to their CVs.
Som it's not even necessary to look further than your own campus to find a worthwhile part-time job. Many universities, for example, use their own students for (contact) alumni—past students—for the purposes of fundraising, newsletters and such like. Working in the alumni office might improve your telephone communication skills, and it might also be excellent networking opportunity. Who knows what useful contacts you could make in the business world?
If you prefer dealing people face-to-face, how about offering your services as a campus guide for prospective students and their families? Fulfilling this role will demonstrate your maturity and trustworthiness and may help you to win a permanent marketing or PR position in the future. Don't forget, also, that student unions, shops and sports facilities all need staff, so if you're (interest) in working in administration or the leisure industry, you could make a start in your chosen field within walking distance of your lectures.
Those with specialist skills could find a place for them on campus, too. If you're a computer talent, you could be extremely useful to your university's IT support team, may know less about programming and building websites than you! Working for a college newspaper is always a good idea for would-be writers, alt this tends to be voluntary work. Whatever your subject is, if you have a particular talent for it you may be able to find work as a private tutor with your (young) or less able students.
Even traditional student (job) like waiting tables and bar work can help you to establish a career for yourself, depending on how you present them on your CV. Think about the skills you have gained or improved by serving food and drinks, such as teamwork and cash handling.
Bring back the night
Our lives are ruled by time and we use time to tell us what to do. But the digital alarm clock that wakes us in the morning or the wristwatch that tells us we are late for supper are unnatural clocks. Our biology dances to a more ancient beat that probably started to work in our humans' early life.
The instructions for a biological clock are fixed within our genes, and those of almost all life on Earth. And they also affect our levels of attention, mood, physical strength, blood pressure and much more.
Biological clocks help time our sleep patterns. This marks the passage of approximately 24 hours and controls everything we do. Our clocks are even used to predict the differing demands of the 24-hour day and adapt our behavior in advance of changing conditions.
By contrast, as dawn approaches, our bodies get themselves ready for increased activity when we wake. Few of us appreciate this internal world, however. We are drawn by an apparent freedom to sleep, work, eat, drink or travel when we want.
Body clocks differ between people. If you are alert in the morning and go to bed early, you are a morning "lark", but if you hate mornings and want to keep going through the night, you are a night "owl". Inour first decade, we tend to wake early, but by the time we are teenagers, bedtimes and getting-up times become later and later.
This habit of getting up later continues until we are about 20 years old. Bythe age of 55—60 we are getting up as early as we did when we were 10. This could explain why young adults really do have a problem getting up in the morning. They show both delayed sleep and lack of sleep because they are going to bed late but still having to get up early in the morning.
We humans have welcomed the freedom to do what we want, when we want to do it. Our 24/7 society has affected the night, an apparent victory of civilization over nature. Disrupting sleep actually has a negative effect on our brains and that drives many of us to substitute the rhythm normally imposed by internal time with coffee and sugary snacks to give us energy and keep us awake. But we have not achieved freedom. We have just created a 24/7 timetable which we cannot keep to without damaging our health.
A. There are fewer absences and improved results. B. Even our ability to learn and do well in exams is affected by them. C. These include, in fact, increased errors, poor memory, reduced mental and physical reaction times and reduced motivation. D. At this point there is a change towards earlier sleep and waking times. E. But the reality is that our society is replacing a biological order developed over millions of years with a false impression. F. These differences are partly laid down within our genes but they also change significantly as we get older. G. Before we go to bed, our body temperature drops, our blood pressure decreases, and tiredness increases. |

Seahorses are beautiful and unusual fish that have captured the imagination of writers and artists for hundreds of years, and they feature in the ancient mythology (神话) and legends (传说) of many countries. Seahorses seem so magical that, to this very day, many people still believe they only exist in children's stories. But the fact is that these delicate and shy little creatures are very real!
Scientists believe seahorses evolved at least 40 million years ago, and have survived from ancient times with only very small changes in their body structure and function. Seahorses have a special appearance. They have a head like a horse, a pouch(育儿袋) like a kangaroo, and a long, curved tail like a monkey. Because of their confusing structure, for many years, people didn't know whether they were fish, insects or shellfish! Today, scientists know without a doubt that seahorses are fish.
Seahorses live mostly in shallow, warm waters. They are not strong swimmers, using only a back fin(鳍) and a pair of tiny fins behind their eyes to push them through the water. Seahorses spend a lot of time attaching to seaweed or sea grass. They are able to hang on to sea grass and seaweed by wrapping their tails around the stems, which helps them to avoid being swept away by strong currents. While they hang from sea grass, their long, tube-like mouth, which has no teeth, acts like a vacuum(吸管) for food. Strangely, seahorses have no stomach so they can't store their food. This means they have to eat fairly continuously throughout the day.
Another unique characteristic of seahorses is that they (along with their cousins, the pipefish) are the only creature in the animal kingdom where the male, not the female, becomes pregnant and gives birth to babies! The female produces eggs and places them in the pouch inside the male, where they are fertilized. The male gives birth to between 5 and 200 young. Amazingly, just a few hours after the male gives birth, the female will once again place eggs in the male's pouch.
Sadly, seahorses are in danger all over the world. Their habitats are being destroyed by human activities. People catch seahorses for pets and for souvenirs. The most endangered seahorse in the world is the Knysnaseahorse, which is only found in South Africa. The reason it is in grave danger is that it has an exceptionally limited distribution range—it is only found in three estuaries(河口) in the whole of South Africa. Unless these estuaries are conserved, South Africa will lose its only seahorse species for ever.
Seahorses are fish with a peculiar appearance. They have a horse head, a pouch, along and curved tail. They live mostly in warm waters. They can't swim well so they attach themselves to seaweed or sea grass strong currents won't sweep them away. They eat most of the time because they have no stomach to store food. The male seahorse becomes pregnant and babies. Unfortunately, they're in danger because people catch them for . The Knysnaseahorse is in grave danger. If we don't protect it, it will be lost . |
Another factor to young people's unhealthy eating habits is that there seem to be no regular meal times these days. Most people skip breakfast because they don't have time or, if they do have something, it is usually of little nutritious value such as toast and jam or a doughnut. Lunch is also a problem. When they have a lunch break, a lot of people use their lunchtime to socialize and they don't want to spend a lot of time eating. 结果是,午饭时间最受欢迎的食物就是各种零食。 These come in the form of burgers, fries, hotdogs or sandwiches which are usually on white bread with plenty of butter and processed foods, such as cheese or luncheon meats. 放学后,大多数的学生是饥饿的,所以他们用饼干和其他不健康的零食充饥。 If they end their day with a meal of pizza or some other ready-made food, they have not had anything fresh or nutritious to eat all day. Combined with sugary soft drinks the average young person's diet is unhealthier now than it has ever been!

I was acting the previous summer in an amateur theater group. I have always enjoyed acting and the theater, but I never thought I would have the opportunity to part of a real Broadway production. This became out a reality during my practice with The StarwayTheater Group. One evening just before our performance we were telling by the organizer of the theater group that an important Broadway director was from the audience. He was there to discover new talents for his show. We could hardly hold our exciting! Even though I had been performing in the small show all summer, I was quite nervous.
When I went on stage for my first scene, I felt as if I were about to make the fool of myself. I still don't understand that exactly happened, whether it was the effect of the bright lights on me or the idea that I was being watched by a great director, but whatever it was, I gave my good performance ever!
Before the show I was asked to meet with the director and he offered me a small part in his Broadway show. That autumn I went to New York and perform for one season on Broadway! It was an experience of a lifetime!
