As the taxi leaves, my father stands at the living room window looking out, watching me move off into the
1 , at 4:30 a. m. His grey hair is untidy(不整洁的) from sleeping.
Moments ago, he got up to carry my suitcase(行李箱) for me. At the middle of 2 night, he set it down for me on the front step in the cold air.
He thanked me for my cooking and for having travelled so far to 3 the holiday with him. I told him that I was worried about his loneliness and the 4 emptiness(空荡) of the house, as he went back to bed alone, to wake later, with 5 there.
"I have my own plans, " he said calmly, in the moments before I walked out.
When I arrived 10 days ago, I felt the quietness in the house. It was 6 and lifeless in the house. Then my brothers and I came and7 the rooms. But, now, they' re gone, I am the last to leave.
I watched the lights go off, but my father didn' t leave. 8 he couldn' t see me in the dark, he stood by the window watching, beside the tree. It was a fresh tree. He buys one every year for the new year. Always, it is ready to decorate when we 9 .
Like trees, my father has got through 10 times without complaining: the early death of my mother years ago, and now his children are far from home. The life of the trees is 11 while my father' s is long and strong. But both of them are tall and straight.
I watched him as he waited in the12 , and there we sat, talked, held our parties, watched the news, waited for the beauty of the winter' s twilight (暮色)each late afternoon and said goodbye. He stands still as the taxi leaves. Are there tears in his eyes, as there are in 13 ? I can' t wave from the taxi, as I leave a 14
to loneliness in the early morning darkness.
I leave behind two trees: one is with grey hair, the other is still 15 . But I don' t have the strength of either one. The sunrise today seems to come later than before.

Across from my home, there is a field with two horses in it. It seems that each horse looks like any other far away. But if you get a closer look, you will see the bigger horse is blind.
But if you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell. It is coming from the neck of the smaller horse in the field. It lets the blind friend know where the other horse is, so he can follow him.
As you stand and watch these two friends, you' ll see that the horse with the bell is always checking on the blind horse and that the blind horse will listen for the bell and then slowly walk to where the other horse is, so that he will not be left(落下).
When the horse with the bell returns to the barn(畜棚) each evening, he will stop from time to time to look back, making sure that the blind friend isn' t too far behind to hear the bell.
Sometimes we are the blind horse, and at other times we are the horse, helping others to find their way.
①When you' re trying to make friends, you' ll probably meet someone who just doesn' t like you, though you' ve never done anything to him or her. Well, what should you do? Here' s some advice.
②Gossip (流言蜚语) can make meeting new people difficult, especially(尤其) when people hear something bad about you. It can prevent someone from getting to know you at all. When you' re in a situation(情况) like this, it feels bad. Instead of trying to win them over(说服), however, just be yourself. As time goes by, they will see that the gossip about you is wrong. Or they may choose to believe it. Don' t worry about it and move on by being friendly to the kind people.
③You' d think that your friend' s friends would also become your friends. But it doesn' t work that way. Sometimes people are happy with the friendships they have, and they aren' t interested in adding any more. If someone chooses not to be friends with you just because you' re new to the group, it' s fine. There' s nothing wrong with you or them.
④An even more difficult situation is when someone has met you and just doesn' t like you. Every joke you make is taken the wrong way. Every time you try to do something nice, they find fault (找茬儿). As much as it hurts, accept that not everyone is going to be your friend. Don' t take it personally. These things could happen to everyone. There are just some people you won' t like.
⑤In a word,if someone doesn' t want to be your friend, that' s okay. Don' t get angry with them because it' s their choice(选择). Instead, give your time and attention to the people that are interested in being with you.
Dan and the Missing Dogs
Dan jumped on his bike and cycled out of the village. Dylan ran along beside him. After about five minutes they came to the sign to Holt Farm. Dan stopped. The farmhouse was down a farm road and behind some trees.
Dan put his bike behind a hedge(树篱)—he didn' t want anyone to see it. Then he started walking down the road.
Dylan walked along behind him. Quickly they came to the trees. Dan moved carefully through the trees. He didn' t want the thieves(贼) to see him.
He got near to the house.
He could see the white van(货车) by the side of the house. He could hear dogs barking but he couldn' t see them.
Slowly and carefully he moved round the house Dylan followed him.
At the back of the house he found the dogs. There were ten of them all together. The dogs were all in a small area with a fence(栅栏) around it. Some of the dogs were standing up barking, a couple were playing and the others were lying down.
There was a gate in the fence with a lock on it.
Dan looked across at the van.
"It' s probably best to get my phone back and call the police, " he thought.
"Stay!" he told Dylan quietly.
Then he quickly ran over to the van. The back door didn' t open. He tried the driver' s door. That didn' t open.
Dan sat down behind the van and thought. The thieves probably had the keys in the house. He could cycle back to the village and call the police. Or he could open the gate and let the dogs out first, and then cycle back to the village. That was a better idea.
a. Dan sat down behind the white van. b. Dan slowly moved round the house.
c. Dan and Dylan reached Holt Farm. d. Dan put his bike behind a hedge.
e. Dan saw the dogs barking, playing and lying.

"Why do we have to go to school? " Desi asked Tisha, her best friend. "Getting up early, schoolwork, homework — it' s too much!"
A few nights later, Desi was drawing when her mom came to talk to her. "Desi, you know the new sickness I told you about — the one that' s been spreading(传播,散开) pretty quickly around the world? " Mom asked. Desi nodded, feeling a little . She didn' t like that her mom looked so worried. "To protect students from the sickness, schools will be shutting down . . . starting tomorrow, " her mom said quietly.
"Wait, what? " A smile started to spread across Desi' s face.
The next day, Desi slept in (睡懒觉)until 9:00 a. m. She watched cartoons in her pajamas(睡衣), drew pictures, played her favorite video games etc. She did whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted.
A week later at breakfast, her mom shared, "Your teachers emailed us. I' m going to help you do your schoolwork at home. "
For the next few days, Desi' s mom did her best, but things were different. Her teacher used funny voices to read what characters(人物) said in books. Her mom didn' t. She didn' t use colorful pipe cleaners when explaining the math problem either. Nothing was fun at all. Desi was starting to miss school. It was so boring playing by herself every day.
Two weeks later, Mom shared a piece of news from school. Desi' s teacher would begin holding classes online. Desi was on the screen. It sure feels good to be back in school, Desi thought, even if it is different.
