(Linlin wants to collect some information about taboos(禁忌) in the U. S. for her blog. So she asks her foreign teacher Sandy for help. )
Linlin:Sandy, could you spare some time to help me?
Sandy: Of course, Linlin.
Linlin:I'm writing about taboos in America for my blog
Sandy:Sure! The first one is using dirty words in conversations.
Linlin: Oh, that is very rude(粗鲁的). We Chinese don't like that, either.
Sandy:
Linlin:Then can I ask a child about his or her age?
Sandy:That's usually OK if the person is very young
Linlin: OK, I get it. I'll add it to my blog.
Sandy:Also, you shouldn't ask someone's salary(薪水) or the price of something.
Linlin:Right. I think those questions may embarrass(使尴尬) Americans.
Sandy:That's right. So it's better not to ask.
Linlin:I remember that.
Sandy:You're welcome.
A. What's wrong? B. Thanks for your ideas, Sandy. C. Can you give me some advice? D. What taboos are you writing about? E. The second one is asking people their age. F. But that's not OK for old people, especially women. |
A couple of years ago, I got off the su bway in Upper Manhattan I was 1 after a long and stressful day at work, dreaming about the warmth of my bed.
I stopped in a 7 11 on the way to my apartment to buy a bag of 2 A man about three times my size stood in front of me at the register(收银台) buying a pack of cigarettes(香烟) He 3 toward me and told me that I looked tired I smiled 4 and became noticeably more alert(戒备的), as a young woman does when a 5 man start s talking to her at night He turned toward the cashier(收银员) and said that he was going to pay for my snack, too I politely 6 and was already taking out my 7 , but this man wouldn't allow me to say no He handed the cashier a couple of extra(额外的) dollars to 8 my popcorn and told me that he 9 my night got better He walked out of the 10 and I never saw him again
The world could use a little more kindness It's so 11 to stay in your own routine(惯例) and everyday personal worries that sometimes we just don't remember to 12 those around us The man 13 paid for my popcorn has encouraged me to continue to 14 those who look like they are in need It feels great to be 15 , so it's a win win!

Zengzi, also called Zeng Shen, became a good student of Confucius(孔子) when he was 16.
Early one morning, Zengzi's wife left for the market. Her little son wanted to go with her. But he was too young and the market was too far.
Then she cheated her son, "I will be back soon. You stay at home and wait for me. If you do as I say, I will kill a pig and make a nice dish for you. "The child went back to the house happily.
When Zengzi's wife got back from the market, she showed no sign of killing a pig. So Zengzi himself prepared to do that, but his wife rushed to prevent him and said, "Don't do that. I just cheated the child. "
"Honesty is the most important thing, "Zengzi said "Children are like blank pieces of paper They understand nothing but they can learn from their parents' actions. Because you have cheated your son, he won't trust you anymore. In the future he will cheat others. "
Hearing her husband's words, Zengzi's wife regretted cheating the child. So she wanted to keep her word. She joined Zengzi in killing the pig, and cooked nice dishes for the child. While eating, the boy was happy and thankful to his parents.
One evening, when the child went to bed, he suddenly got up and ran outside. Zengzi asked him where he was going. The boy replied, "I promised I was going to return a toy to a friend today. But I forgot, so I am going to return it now. "The couple exchanged satisfied smiles, and waited until the boy came back.
① Zengzi's wife went to the market. ② Zengzi's son returned the toy to his friend.
③ Zengzi's wife killed the pig with him. ④ Zengzi disagreed with his wife.
Most people have flown a kite or have seen one fly up and down in strong spring wind. But not so many people know that kites were first made in China thousands of years ago. The ancient Chinese made and flew kites even before they began to write.
Kite flying is an important part of Chinese traditional culture. It is believed that the origin of kite flying can be traced back to(追溯到) the Warring States period. The Chinese made kites to use in wars. They would fly these war kites in the dark. The kites were fixed so that they made strange sounds. Men who were at war with them would he ar these sounds and run away. They thought those strange sounds were made by gods in the sky. The ancient Chinese also flew kites to bring good luck and to make their crops(农作物) grow rich and tall.
Kites are made of bamboo, paper, silk and other materials. They come in different shapes and sizes, such as birds, butterflies, dragons and so on. Kite flying is a popular activity among people of all ages. It is a great way to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.
Kite flying is not only an activity, but also a form of art. People often decorate(装饰) their kites with colorful paints and patterns. Kite flying competitions are also held in many places. People compete to see who can fly their kites the highest and longest.
Kite flying is also a symbol of good luck. People often write wishes on their kites and fly them in the sky, hoping that their wishes will come true. In some places, people also fly kites to celebrate festivals and special occasions.
The biggest secret about inventing is that anybody can do it!Perhaps this sounds crazy, but it's true.
Wrong idea number 1:
Well, inventing means creating something"new", but the idea could come from something that already exists(存在). The Wright brothers, for example, got the idea for building a"flying machine"from watching birds.
Wrong idea number 2:Inventors are born, not made.
There are a lot of factors(因素) that make innovation(创新) possible He was born with a special talent for music. But other factors were also important for his creativity. His father was a music teacher, and Mozart practiced for hours every day, from the time he was in kindergarten. Thomas Edison said that being an inventor was"99% hard work and 1% inspiration"! As one inventor said, "A failure is the right answer to the wrong question!"
Wrong idea number 3:Inventors are always old people.
Here are two examples of young inventors: Louis Braille went blind when he was a child. When he was 15, he invented a system of reading and writing for blind people that is still used in most countries today. As a young man, George Nissen was watching trapeze artists(空中飞人) in a show. He watched how they fell into the net and then bounced(弹起) back up again. This gave him an idea and he invented the trampoline(蹦床).
A. Take Mozart, for example.
B. An invention has to be something completely new.
C. Don't believe that you can't invent something when you are young.
D. Very successful creators don't give up when they get something wrong.
E. Maybe you have the wrong idea about inventing, so read on to discover the truth.
Most tourists don't go to Candeal, a small city in the east of Brazil. But if they're interested in music, they will go there.
Carlinhos Brown was born here in 1962. He arrived on the Brazilian pop scene in 1982 and in the 1990s he became widely known as the leader of the musical group Timbalada. There were more than 100 members in this group, and most of them were young kids from Candeal. They recorded eight albums(专辑)and toured many countries around the world.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Candeal was a very poor area, and Carlinhos wanted to do something for the kids. So he opened the Pracatum Music School. On a classroom wall he painted, "This is the school of my dreams", to encourage the students.
Hundreds of young people between five and twelve have learnt to play music there. They start by playing music on bottles and boxes. Then they go on to other instruments. Many of them have become very successful musicians.
The school has been training young musicians from the area since 1994——and it's been doing it for free. "My musical work started here as a student with Mr. Brown, "said Jair Rezende. "I lost both my parents as a boy and Carlinhos helped me a lot. He is like a second father to me. "
Jair is a teacher himself and he has been working at the music school for many years. "We have been helping kids to stay away from danger and to get good marks at school, " he said.
For some years now, the school has been working together with government programs, and now there is a big project for improving the neighborhood of Candeal. People believe the Pracatum Music School has magic and they love it.
Where does the seafood we eat come from? You may have a quick answer:the sea Xinjiang people may say:"It is not always true. "
Xinjiang is far the sea Now it welcomes a big harvest(丰收) of local"seafood", as shrimp(虾) and crabs(螃蟹).
The most important thing for aquatic products (水产品) is water. Xinjiang has many rivers and lakes with water is from the melting(融化的) snow and glaciers(冰川) of the Tianshan Mountains With the water, fish ponds(鱼塘) can (build)
Also, land in Xinjiang has a lot of salt This is not good for (grow) crops(庄稼) But"one man's trash(垃圾) is another man's treasure" The land makes the underground water (salt) People turn the water into"man-made seawater". They then use it to raise sea fish, shrimp, crabs and so on.
Now, some of Xinjiang's"seafood"goes to many (city) in China It also goes to countries in Southeast Asia.
Many people are worried about the (safe) of seafood because of the nuclear contaminated water(核污染水) Now, Xinjiang's"seafood"is becoming a new (choose) for seafood lovers
