Taking care of the old people seems an unpopular choice for many young people. However, this is what Tashi Wangmo, a 34-year-old woman from Barkam, Sichuan, decided to do at the age of 17.
Growing up as an orphan (孤儿) raised by those around her, Tashi Wangmo had always wanted to give back to society (社会). "Finding that Barkam Nursing Home was taking in new workers in 2010, I thought this was the best way to realize my dream." she said.
Tashi Wangmo's love for the elderly people she cares for has grown day by day and seen her put everything she has into her work. "When I first started here, I was just a young girl while some of the old people were in their 50s or 60s. They had no children, and I had no parents, so we kept each other company." she said.
Gradually, she got a better understanding of the elderly and the meaning of her job. She noticed that the key to getting along with elderly people is that you need to think of them as being a bit like kids. "If you can stand a child making trouble for you, if you are patient enough to teach a child to eat, get dressed and talk, then you can do the same for elderly people."
In 2023, Tashi Wangmo was chosen as an NPC deputy. She said that being an NPC deputy is not as difficult as it may seem. "NPC deputies are a bridge between the country and the people," she said. "I became an NPC deputy by simply doing my job, and I want to bring the difficult situations of the people from the mountains into attention and bring hope back to them."
In 2020, Lily lost her only daughter. She was so grieved that she left her hometown and moved to another city. One day, she met a girl who was living with a host family nearby. They shared the same hobbies and soon became good friends.
A few years later, the girl changed to different host families, and had a hard time. So she looked for help from Lily. Lily quickly welcomed the girl into her home and held a party for her. After the welcome party, Lily unpacked the girl's backpack. It was full of rubbish with only a few clothes. Lily and her husband were touched, so they decided to take the girl for shopping.
The girl was so glad that she got new "parents". That made Lily think about other poor kids who were not as lucky as the girl. She wanted to give them a hand, too. Lily then came up with the idea of opening a shop offering free clothes. She made her plan and finally carried out the idea. The shop is called Blossom, because every child is like flowers. We need to take good care of them. The shop gives out free clothes to anyone in need. At Blossom, families can pickup three full sets of clothes and shoes for free.
Lily hopes all that she has done will bring children more happiness and love. Lily says if the shop is successful, she will think about opening an education center to help the children study.
Li Liyong used to be a yachtsman (帆船运动员)on China's national team. In 2013, he met some autistic( 患自闭症的 ) children in a special education school for the first time. Since then, Li has been trying to make a difference to them.
The ocean and yachting always give Li power, so he thought that they could help those autistic children out of their closed world. Then he decided to organize yachting activities for them. At first, nobody agreed with his idea. But Li didn't give up. In May, 2013, the first group including 20 children and their parents began their adventure (冒险) . Many children were afraid to board the yacht at first. But when they sat and tried to put their feet into the water, they smiled.
A child called Xiaoyu is one of the members. His mother says he has become more outgoing and can hug or shake hands with other kids after the activity. He also shares his happiness with his family. The mother of another child Xiaoxin, says he looks very joyful on the sea. "Seeing the happiness on his face gives me hope, "she says.
Li says, "I hope more people can know, understand, respect and accept autistic children, and learn to treat them like everyone else. "

Going to a movie now has been a part of our life. But have you ever thought of blind people watching movies?
64﹣year﹣old Wang Fokun lost his eyesight in his fifties. He had to give up his hobby of watching movies then. But in the past two years, a theater has helped him to get his love for the cinema back. Every Saturday, Wang travels 40 minutes to "watch" a movie.
It's at Xindeng Theater in Kunming that Wang "watches" the movie. With the help of volunteers, Wang enjoys himself along with many other blind people. The volunteers describe what is happening on the screen, including when the story happens, what they are doing. . . Thanks to the description, the blind can throw themselves into the movie. They laugh when something funny happens and cry during sad scenes.
The task of describing the movie is not as simple as it sounds. The volunteers must be familiar with every scene in the movie. "I watch a movie at least three times and write down every small part, " one of the volunteers said. And they have to practice many times before they do the job. However, they all enjoy the experience. "We're glad to bring enjoyment to the audience(观众), " they said. So far, thousands of blind people have enjoyed more than 100 films described by them. They all agree that the volunteers do a great job.
Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can make a person's life better.
National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is
a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect chance to encourage others to become a volunteer.Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they don't have enough time to do volunteer work.
The following tips can help if you have some of those worries;
Start out slowly.Don't add too much pressure(压力),Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone's life.
Choose an organization(组织)with the same interest and common values.
Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.
Finally,it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience.Remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn't work, don't give up and you'll surely find the right one.
Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people's lives.
