When I was in Grade Eight, our physics(物理) teacher gave us a challenge to make a paper plane of any shape. The only goalwas to get it to fly as far as possible. I had a lot of skills in making paper planes, so I made the best plane I could, and it flew pretty far.
One boy called Eric made the simplest paper plane. He stood there at the starting line with a normal piece of paper. A minute later, he took the flat piece of paper, made it into a ball, and threw it down the hallway. We were so surprised at what he did. We never expected things to happen like that. He beat all of us easily.
Some of the students got angry and Mary even said that he cheated.
The physics teacher said, "How so? He doesn't do anything wrong because a paper ball is indeed(确实) a shape. I like his idea. "
Yes, Eric didn't cheat. He just finished the task in a different way. In our life, what we have learned turns into our experience. We do everything according to it. However, our experience gets in the way of our development sometimes. It stops us from coming up with new ideas and is bad for our creativity. So it is really necessary for us to learn to think outside of the "box". Then we may think of more and easier ways so that we can have a better result. Just like Eric in the story, we should think creatively.
①There is a famous saying in English "Stop the world. I want to get off!" This saying is actually about a feeling of fear, which makes a person want to stop whatever they are doing, try to relax, and become calm again. "Stress" means pressure. It is one of the most common causes of health problems in modern life. Too much stress results in physical, emotional(情绪的)and mental(精神的)health problems.
②There are plenty of physical effects(影响)of stress. Stress is bad for the heart. It can make the heart beat faster or miss beats, and can also cause high blood pressure. Stress can make a difference to the respiratory system(呼吸系统). It can cause a person to breathe so fast, leading to a loss of carbon dioxide. What's more, stress can also cause stomach hurts. These are only a few examples of problems resulting from stress.
③Emotions have to do with stress. People who have too much stress often feel worried. They may feel tired all the time. When people are under stress they often overreact(过度反应)to little problems. For example, a normally gentleparent under a lot of stress at work may shout at a child for dropping a glass of juice. Stress can make people angry or nervous.
④Long-term stress can lead to different kinds of serious mental problems. Depression, a terrible feeling of sadness and hopelessness, can be the result of continued and increasing stress. Eating disorders(紊乱)are sometimes caused by stress and are often made worse by stress. If stress is allowed to continue, then one's mental health is at risk.
⑤It is clear that stress is a serious problem. It has a great influence on the health and our feeling. There must be many effective(有效的)ways to lowerstress. So, stop the world and rest for a while to lower stress.
People can travel without much money by staying in other people's house. Sometimes the travelers may sleep for a few nights on other people's couch(沙发)for free. This way of travelling is called couch surfing(冲浪).
Couch Surfing. org is an organization that connects(联系) travelers all around the world. Members of it can find a place to stay when they travel or share their homes and hometowns with travelers from other places. In this way strangers(陌生人) can help strangers in order to make the world a better place.
The organization has millions of members in 238 different countries and it has changed the way of travel forever. Jamie from Australia has traveled in this way all over the world. "When I travelled before, I used to find a cheap hotel to save money, now I stay in really nice houses and apartments. But the best thing isn't the free-living condition, it's the people you meet. A couch surfing host will usually cook you a meal which helps break the ice. Then they'll often introduce you to their friends and take you to the places they enjoy. Couch surfing allows you to experience a country and its culture. "
▲ Delphine, an experienced host from Paris, has an answer. "They say that money makes the world go round but I try to help people go round the world without much money!" she says with a smile. So far she has received more than 100 travelers. "I enjoy meeting people from different cultures and I've made friends from all over the world," says Delphine, who is also a cook. "And of course, I like sharing French food with them. Usually, my guests love trying it but I've had problems sometimes. Once I cooked roast lamb for a guest but unluckily, when she got here, she told me she was only used to eating vegetables!"
The idea of travelling the world for free has even been made into a TV show. Alex and Zsolt from the US set out with no money at all. They depended on social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter to ask for help. They say, "Wherever we went, we were always provided with food. All over the world, food is a common bond(纽带). " They travelled sixteen different countries and the results were turned into the TV show Around the World for Free.
Nowadays we often work as a team. But leading a group of people can be difficult. People want team leaders they can trust. Would you like to be a good leader?
Ask to know your team.
Learn about each person on your team. You can't be a successful leader unless you know your team. Be a "learner" instead of a "knower" as you don't have all of the answers. For example, as you pass someone, you can ask, "Hi! Do you enjoy doing these projects?" or "Do you have any ideas about how to do it better?"
Be as active as you can when you stay with your team. It's a good practice to talk actively with everyone on your team. Tell them what you're thinking about and what new projects you're considering. The more you talk to them, the more comfortable they will feel when they give you their opinions.
Listen to your team.
Let your team feel you're a good listener. Be patient and never try to interrupt(打断) them. Make your team feel they can talk to you.
Care about your team.
Show your team you care about them as you are friends. People will work harder for their leaders if they feel they are really cared about. That will make your team trust and respect you more.
A. Talk to your team. B. Keep silent to your team. C. Here's some advice for you. D. Listen to what they want to say. E. Try to get close to them by asking questions. F. It was a lovely spring afternoon. My classmates were playing happily on the playground when I cried "Ow! Ow! Something in my shoe is biting(咬) me. "
Everyonewasshockedbythecry. They took me into a classroom and were abouttotake offmy1 . "Which foot is it?" One asked. "Let us have a look. "
Suddenly, I remembered the holes in 2 socks. My family was very poor during those years. I wore welfare socks, which cost only a little, but those 3 welfare socks didn't last long. They soon had4 at the bottom(底部).
I refused to take off my shoes. I 5 stand others seeing the holes in my sock. I tried to hold back my tears. Yet, each time the thing 6 my shoe bit me, tears ran down my face.
My teacher, Miss Diane, hurried into the 7 . "What's wrong?" she asked.
"Something is biting her right foot, 8 she doesn't let us take off her shoe. " One of my classmates answered.
Miss Diane lived next door to me. She 9 everything about my family. She put both hands on my shaking body and 10 into my sad and nervous eyes.
"Oh, yes, it must be a sock-eating ant(蚂蚁)," she said. It seemed that she had11 seen the thing inside the shoe. "I had a bite from one of those ants. It12 almost the whole bottom off my sock. " My classmates nodded (点头) while they were listening to the teacher 13 .
Miss Diane took off my right shoe and sock and shook them over the dustbin(垃圾桶). Two red ants14 it.
"Just what I thought. The ants have eaten part of her sock. " When she stroked an alcohol cotton ball(酒精棉球) on the bites, she added," You are such a 15 girl to take so many bites. "
The alcohol felt cool on the bites butthe little girl felt warm and thankful in heart.
As an old saying goes, a good book is like good friend. If so, my best friend must be The Old Man and the Seaby American writer Ernest Hemingway.
In my eyes, Ernest Hemingway is probably one of the (great) writers in the 20th century. When he was 19, he volunteered to go to war(战争) because he wanted to take risks. However, he was badly hurt in the war and (get)back home. In Hemingway's life, this experience was important. He wrote several books about the war (show) how bad life was for the young men who had to fight.
Hemingway liked to write in very short sentences with simple words. This was because he wanted his readers to feel the emotions(情感) of his stories (clear). The Old Man and the Seais one of his famous books. I (read) it twice. I learned a lot from this book, especially the spirit of the main character, Santiago.
The Old Man and the Sea is a story about an old fisherman named Santiago who fights with a big fish by himself in the sea. He experiences many ups and downs. He (have)no water, food or people to help him. But he never stops fighting with the big fish, dangerous animals, rough sea or even his own (ill).
Although the story is short and simple, it is still very powerful. It tells us that a man can be destroyed(摧毁)by life, can still be a good and strong man. That's why I like the book most. Every time I read it, it cheers (my) up. I hope I can be like Santiago.
