Dear Wang Lin,
Sorry to hear that you have problems in English learning. But don't worry. Everyone has the to learn English well. Here are some to language learning. I hope they may help you.
Listening and repeating is a good way to improve your . Why not buy some English tapes? You can listen to them at home and the sentences again and again until you are comfortable with them.
It's normal to forget some new words sometimes. But I think you can write them down on paper or your notebooks so that you can them in your free time. Another way is to read every morning. Reading is one of the best ways to your vocabulary(词汇).
I know it's really boring to remember rules. But grammar is really useful. Remember to listen to the teacher and take carefully in class. You can them on your own or with your classmates after class. Then practice what you learned by doing exercises. Try to study and remember information bit by bit instead of memorizing a lot once.
Yours,
Gina
I'm Linda. Last year, I studied abroad alone. I lived with a host family in Madrid, Spain. Neither of my Spanish parents knew how to speak English at all, so it was very difficult in the beginning. But as I was used to their way of life and to only speaking in Spanish, we became very close.
My host mom, Concha, was a famous cook and she owned a restaurant. I was very lucky to try different kinds of traditional Spanish meals. Since I studied abroad for half a year, I had enough time to travel. I traveled to Venice, Florence, Rome and Milan with a group of my friends for a week. While in Rome, we visited the Trevi Fountain (特莱维喷泉) . It is said that if you stand with your back to the fountain and throw a coin (硬币) in over your shoulder while making a wish, that wish will come true. My wish was to have a happy study abroad experience that I would never forget. I am glad that my wish has come true and I will do it again if I visit there next time.
While I was studying abroad in Madrid, Spain, I went on journeys all throughout the country. Through these journeys, I was able to see different parts of the country and experience many different parts of Spanish culture.
The woman who first suggested Mother's Day was a famous poet named Julia. She suggested a Mother's Day for peace and against war. Mother's Day became a designated holiday in 1914.
A study shows that the number of phone calls goes up 11% on Mother's Day. So don't be lazy: Your mom certainly expects to hear from you, and not just with a text. Carnations (康乃馨) have already become the symbol of Mother's Day. Many moms hope to get flowers from their kids or loved ones on this special day. If you're thinking about taking your mom out to eat, you might consider which time of the day will have enough open tables. Mother's Day is one of the busiest days of the year for restaurants. Besides, you need to get your mom a gift, clothing, electronics or gift cards, etc.
Many countries have a Mother's Day, though they don't always fall on the second Sunday in May like it does in the US, Australia, China, Japan, and India. Flowers and gifts are a worldwide tradition for the day, but in Thailand parades (游行) are held. In another country, moms are tied up until they give sweets and gifts to their children. What a special and funny tradition!
Paper cups, plastic bags and old newspapers. There are so many single-use things (一次性物品) that we throw away after using only once.
①According to news website Quartz, we are now living in a "throw-away society". Single-use has become a natural way of life and can be seen almost everywhere.
②Every day, we see new memes (表情包), stories and Internet slang (网络俚语) on social media. With so many of them coming out all the time, the lifespan (寿命) of each becomes short - they become "single-use online products". This also means social media users are always searching for the next big thing.
③You may feel frustrated (沮丧) when trying to keep up with these memes and slang, but you just cannot help but keep scrolling(滚屏). It is endless - no matter it's WeChat Moments (朋友圈), Sina Weibo or Facebook.
④While you read single-use content (内容) online, you also produce it. Since 2017, WeChat Moments (朋友圈) has allowed users to make only the last three days of their posts viewable (可见的). As a result, more and more people don't take their posts seriously.
Since it doesn't take too much time and energy to communicate anymore, we now even have disposable (用后即扔的) friendships, according to a story in Fast Company.
A single-use way of life may give you quick pleasure. But the pleasure may not last for long because there is no deep thought behind it. Maybe we need to slow down and enjoy a more thoughtful way of life.
A long time ago, there was an old, poor fisherman who could not catch enough fish for him and his family to eat. One day, when he pulled in his fishing net, he found a bottle inside that looked valuable,But he was also curious to see what was inside, so he took the top off the bottle. Smoke came out of the bottle and then out came a big, powerful genie(怪物).
The genie had been in the bottle for 400 years and was very angry. At first, he told the fisherman that he would kill him and the fisherman had to choose how he wanted to be killed. Scared, the fisherman decided to trick the genie. He told him that he did not believe he could fit inside the little bottle because he was so much bigger than it was. The fisherman told the genie that he had tricked him and then said he would only let the genie out again if the genie promised to help him instead of hurting him.
The genie then took the fisherman to a lake where there were many special fish. The fisherman caught four of these fish and the genie told him to take these fish to the king. The fish were special because they could talk! The king was very impressed by this and he paid the fisherman a lot of money for the fish.
The King also gave the fisherman's son a very important job and married one of the fisherman's beautiful daughters.
A. He thought it was useless. B. So the genie went back inside to prove it. C. They could answer any questions that someone might have. D. He thought he could sell the bottle and make some money. E. The genie promised to do so and the fisherman released him. |
After a busy morning at work, lunchtime gives me a chance to do many things, such as exercise, read or watch TV. One cultural difference I've noticed between Britain and China is what we do during lunchtime.
Here in China, workers have longer lunch breaks, which gives them enough time to take a short nap. Therefore, Chinese people usually use lunchtime to rest. I often see office workers rest their heads on their desks. The room turns into a quiet "bedroom". Once, I even saw workers in a restaurant taking short naps as well. This is also very common for students in China. After lunch, they will go back to their dormitories or classrooms to take a nap. Chinese people believe a short nap at noon can help them feel more energetic in the afternoon.
In Britain, this activity is quite uncommon. British students usually have a one-hour lunch break. Instead of napping, they fill that time by playing sports or talking with friends.
Most workers in Britain don't get the chance to nap. They generally have short lunch breaks—30 minutes to an hour. There is not enough time to have a nap. Because of the shortness of their lunch breaks, it is common for people to work through lunch or just finish their lunch at their desk.

A traveler in South Africa once set out on a long journey. When crossing a wide plain(平原), far from home, he saw a lion at a distance. The lion saw him at the same time, and followed him slowly.
When the traveler walked fast, the lion walked fast! When he stopped, the lion stopped! The man realized that the lion meant to follow him until the dark, and then attack(攻击) him.
He was not able to run away from the lion because the lion ran faster than him. So he thought of a plan to fool it.
He came to a large rock. He hid behind the rock, where the lion could not see him. Then taking a stick which he could find there, he put his coat and his hat on it, in order to make them look like a man. He then placed the stick with the coat and the hat standing in the ground above the rock. He then left quietly.
The lion stopped and watched the coat and the hat, at a distance. At nightfall, it jumped onto the coat and the hat to try to kill the man.
But the traveler was already far away. Before long, he reached his own home.
