I used to hate running. At secondary school I found it very tired to run around the sports field and Iwas always one of the1students to cross the finish line. Then, in 2020, my friend asked me to run with him, My 2was," No way! I hate running".
During the weekend Ithought about his question. "Why do I hate running?" I thought. Inthe end I decided to3it. I told my friend I would like torun with him. He was4to hear that. He advised me to look fora running program on the Internet to5me learn how to run. Therewere lots of running programs on the Internet. I6 a 14-week running program. Iwould attend a match when I finished the program. I had to run three times aweek. At first, I ran for short periods of 7and had long breaks. Then8 the weeks went on, I had to run for longerperiods of time and the breaks got9. I enjoyed following the runningprogram each week. Now I can run for10 than 30 minutes each time! I went from11 running to loving running!
On the day of the12I was both excited and nervous. 13was finally time to put my new skills into practice. My friends andfamily came to support me. It was lovely to have them there. With their supportand my training, I managed to finish the 10000-metre run in 72 minutes. I wasvery 14 of that.
From this experience I15 it was a good idea to trysomething before saying I hated it! Because it turned out that I really enjoyedrunning.

Alice was very excited. One of her favourite writers had just published a new book. She had saved upher money, and she was ready to buy the book this weekend. She talked about thebook with her online chat(聊天) group. Alot of the other kids in the group were going to buy the book, too. . In fact, that was the main thing everyone in the chat room was talking about oneafternoon.
All of a sudden, Alicegot a chat message from Ella, one of the kids in the chat room. The messagesaid that Ella wanted to meet Alice at the bookstore. Then they could buy thenew book together. Alice told her mum about the message, and her mum asked,"Do you know Ella from school?"
"No," Aliceanswered. "We've only chatted online. I don't think she goes to my school."
"Listen,"Alice's mum was anxious and said, "I want you to have friends, but sometimes, people online aren't who they say they are. And when you're online, you can'talways tell. So I don't think it's a good idea for you to meet this person. "
"But, Mum," Alicesaid," what if it is just a kid named Ella who wants to buy a book with me?"
Alice's mum consideredthat for a moment. Then she said. Let's do this. Dad and I will go with you tothe bookstore to buy the book with Ella. If Ella really is just a kid who wantsto meet you in person, that's great. If not, ▲ .
Alice didn't like that idea. It made her feel like a baby. But she knew her mum was right about safety, so shefinally nodded. Then she answered Ella's message. She told Ella that she and herparents would be at the bookstore the next afternoon.
The next day, Alicewent to the bookstore with her mum and dad. When Ella never showed up and thendisappeared from the chat room, Alice knew her parents were right. She was gladthey were there to be with her.
Most people ride thebus to get from point A to point B, but riders taking a new route in Hong Kongare only interested in sleeping. Ulu' Travel Agency, a tour company in HongKong, has designed a five-hour bus journey especially for passengers to sleepas much as they want. Tickets for the first tour on Oct. 16 sold out right away,The Washington Post reported.
Many people find it easy. But why? According to a website, there are several possible reasons.
White noise
White noise is a kindof noise made by sounds with different frequencies(频率) together. Buses are often crowded every day with people going toand from work. Therefore, they are the perfect environment for white noise. Theymake continuing noises. White noise makes people feel relaxed and helps themsleep.
Rocking movement
Another popular viewon why it's easy to fall asleep on buses is because of the rocking movement."The movement of buses feels like a mother shaking a baby in her arms. It isvery comfortable," Frankie Chow, the founder of Ulu Travel Agency, told The Washington Post.
When you were a baby, you were rocked to sleep. That makes you connect the rocking movement withsleeping. Sitting on a bus gives people similar experiences. That's why youwant to sleep. It's the rocking movement that induces sleep.
Long periods of inactivity
Onbuses, you don't move around very much. You just sit down and enjoy the sceneryas the bus moves along the road. Basically, you re away from the things that keepyour mind and your physical body busy. This inactivity also slows your brain activitydown because there's no stimulus(刺激物) to keepit awake.
Increase in carbon dioxide
Buses often get crowdedwith people going to and from work. Carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) increases when there are lots of people in a small place. Thethinner oxygen (氧气) slows the brain down, causingpeople to feel sleepy.
Watson entered Mr. Smith'soffice. The boss was a hard man. He fired people who didn't do well withoutgiving them a second chance.
"Watson,"said Mr. Smith, "this past year your department (部门) hasn't earned money. We're going to drop that department. It'sfinished. I'm sorry, but you will have to go now. ""But, sir if Ijust had a little more time. For the moment I need the job to keep my son atRiverside.
"What'sthat!!" said the boss. "Riverside! I didn't know you had a boy there. That's an expensive school for a man with your salary(薪水). ""I know, sir. But he likes it there so much! He's astar athlete and the best boxer in the school. The boys call him Champ there.
The boss sat seriouslystill for a long time- a faraway(恍惚) look inhis eyes. Then, suddenly, he said," We've got to close your department,Watson. But you'll take over a new job in another department. It means longerhours- maybe more pay. Now get out. You're here for life.
Watson got out, withsurprise on his face. Then the boss took a letter from the top drawer of hisdesk. It was Herbie's last letter from Riverside School written a few days beforehe died. He had read it over and over again with sick pain. The letter read:
Ican't say the boys here are any nicer to me than the others were. I guess it'sthe same everywhere when you 're a cripple(跛脚的人). But don't worry about me,Dad. And there's one boy here who is really great. He's a track star and boxingchamp (冠军)and just tops in chemistry. The boys call him Champ. He made them stop throwingmy books around. And he knocked a boy down who hit me. He is the best friend Iever had. Dad, I am so grateful to him. When I grow up, I want to do somethingfor Champ. Something big- that he won't even know about.
Your son,
Herbie

T:Hello, everyone. Earthquakes always happen suddenly, so it is difficult to warnpeople about them. Usually people have little or no idea about what to doduring an earthquake, so today let's talk about some advice. If you havequestions, just put up your hands and stand up.
S1:If we are inside the room, what should we do?
T:You must keep calm. When the land stops shaking, leave the building quickly.
S2:Don't use the lift when we leave the building.
T:Quite right. And you mustn't jump out of high buildings. If you can't go out at
thattime, you'd better hide under a firm(坚固的)table.
S3:Should we go inside the building to help people in danger?
T:No, never. When you are outside, never go inside again. Just move away from
buildings, because parts of a building may fall on you.
S4:You mean we find an open air and stay together.
T:Yes. You must stay away from bridges, trees and other tall things, like street lightsand power lines.
S5:We should protect our heads when running to a safe place.
T:Good idea. In short, follow "what you've learned in school. Be brave. Youcan be safe.

Dear Editor, As you know, the "double reduction" policy has had a great influence on children's studies and lives. My son used to take lots of after- school classes, but now he has less homework and seems to have nothing much to do on weekends. I'm worried about him. Here are my problems. Could you help me? 1. Should I give him other homework to do on weekends? Why? 2. Should I encourage him to take up a hobby on weekends? Why? I'm looking forward to getting your advice. Yours, A worried mother |
