Flexible, wearable electronics are making their way into everyday use, and their full potential is still to be realized. Soon, this technology could be used for precision medical sensors attached to the skin, designed to perform health monitoring and disease detection. It would be like having a high-tech medical center at your service. Worn routinely, future wearable electronics could potentially detect possible emerging health problems-such as heart disease, cancer-even before obvious signs appear. The device could also do a personalized analysis of the tracked health data while minimizing the need for its wireless transmission(传输).
Such a skin-like device is being developed in a project. Leading the project is Sihong Wang, assistant professor at the University of Chicago. This device would need to collect and process a vast amount of data, well above what even the best smartwatches can do today, and it would have to deal with this data speedily with very low power consumption in a very tiny space. To address that need, the team called upon neuromorphic computing(神经形态计算). This AI technology copies operation of the brain by training on past data sets and learning from experience. Its advantages also include compatibility(兼容性) with stretchable material, lower energy consumption and faster speed than other types of AI.
The other major challenge the team faced was integrating the electronics into a skin-like stretchable material. The key material in any electronic device is a semiconductor. In current rigid electronics used in cell phones and computers, this is normally a solid silicon chip.
Stretchable electronics require that the semiconductor be a highly flexible material that is still able to conduct electricity. The team's skin-like neuromorphic chip consists of a thin film of a plastic semiconductor combined with stretchable gold nanowire electrodes. Even when stretched to twice its normal size, their device functioned as planned without formation of any breaks.
"While still requiring further development on several fronts, our device could one day be a game changer in which everyone can get their health status in a much more effective and frequent way, " said Wang.
Going against the tide of flocking to well-known tourist destinations on vacation, a growing number of holidaymakers in China tend to spend their leisure time at lesser-known attractions. Reverse tourism (逆向旅游) has appeared as a new trend among young holidaymakers in China.
According to data from an online travel agency, the number of rooms booked at hotels in less-traveled cities during the holiday was up 30 percent year-on-year. Bookings for four-star or five-star hotels in less-traveled places all increased ten times at a minimum. Some lesser-known scenic spots posted double-digit (两位数的) growth during the holiday. Baimaiquan Park in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, received 52,100 visits in the seven days, up to 15.78 percent year-over-year.
Besides crowds, some vacationers chose less-traveled places to save on the cost of trips to popular destinations. In addition, lesser-known attractions are not as "commercial" as developed ones and are able to offer more actual experiences and natural encounters.
Essentially speaking, total relaxation is becoming a real expectation for many people when they travel. Changes in demand may be the fundamental reason for the popularity of reverse tourism. COVID-19 is another key factor fueling reverse tourism. As preventive measures continue, traveling has an unpredictable quality. Travelers have thus become more cautious and tend to choose local attractions or places with fewer tourists.
"The rise of reverse tourism is not a bad thing," said Zhengzhou Daily. It means that vacationers now have more options, which brings more possibilities to the tourism market. More importantly, it noted, the trend is set to force popular destinations to improve themselves instead of resting on their past honor.
Jiang Han, a senior researcher, said that reverse tourism will become one of the future directions for the market. To give a real boost to the tourism market, Jiang suggested that more efforts be made to tap the potential of underestimated, lesser-known destinations. It is necessary to dig deeper into the local customs and highlight the local characteristics to improve the quality of local tourism.
D It blocks the development of some popular resorts.
When it comes to settling down young children, parenting advice focuses mostly on one tool: What to say. Parents are taught to say this or that, or even how to apologize to an angry child. While in practice, many parents turn to another means of comforting: Touch their child. But it's not just any type of touch. It occurs at a particular speed and with a particular pressure.
During the end of the 19th century, many European doctors actually advised parents not to touch their children because they said it would weaken them and make them dependent. This idea hit a fever height in the 1920s when the psychologist John B. Watson wrote a parenting book in which Watson advises mothers to stay away, physically, from children. He believed that by not touching young children, parents teach them to be independent at an early age.
"But then it turns out that the opposite is actually true," Neuroscientist Helena Wasling says. "Children who get a lot of touch, support and closeness from their parents are actually the ones that dare to go out and explore, as they grow up, because they have a basic safety that they can depend on." And of course, gentle touch can calm and relax adults, just as much as they do children, says Wasling.
After decades of research, neuroscientists are beginning to understand how our skin senses this type of touch and how that feeling lights up regions of the brain to affect our emotions. It turns out that our skin contains nerves (神经) which can sense a gentle touch. And these nerves are part of a system inside our skin that excites the warm, calm and peaceful feeling you have when you're with people who love you. For some kids with autism (自闭症), this type of touch might not feel good, Wasling notes, and may even feel bad. "A child with autism may become over-sensitive towards physical touch." she says. "The relationship between touch and reward (奖励) can be totally different."
By the time she turned 18, Khadijah Williams had attended twelve schools. She had lived in shelters, in parks, and in motels, never in a permanent residence for more than a few months. She had tolerated the blames of students who considered her as "different".
Homeless since early childhood, Khadijah struggled all her life to hide her circumstances from teachers and fellow students. However, academics proved to be a way for her to find confidence in herself again. For instance, at the age of 9, she placed in the 99th percentile on a state exam, and her teacher told her she was "gifted". From that moment forward, Khadijah decided to do whatever it took to keep herself in that category. "I was so proud of being smart. I never wanted people to say, ‘You got the easy way out because you're homeless,'" she said. "I never saw it as an excuse."
By the second year of high school, she realized that she could not succeed in getting the further education she dreamed of without getting help to go beyond what her current school could offer. She talked to teachers and counselors (辅导员) who helped her apply to summer community college classes, scholarships, and enrichment programs. And in 11th grade, when she enrolled at Jefferson High School, she decided to complete the rest of her school career there—a decision that meant taking a bus each morning at 4 a.m. and not getting home until 11 p.m.
Her perseverance and hard work paid off, however. When she poured the story of her life into her Harvard University college application, she was accepted.
Once Khadijah felt ready to tell her story, it won her notice not only from college admissions boards but also from the news media, including Oprah, who introduced Khadijah on her show. Now as a successful student at Harvard, Khadijah continues to use the lessons of her extraordinary life to help and inspire other students.
How to age gracefully (优雅地)
As we age, it's natural to experience changes in our bodies and minds. By taking care of our bodies and minds, we can age gracefully and enjoy good health and happiness. Here are some tips for aging in a healthy and graceful way!
Prioritize self-care
To start with, it's vital that you put yourself, and self-care first! This is important at any stage of life, and you'll thank yourself later for starting early. Practicing self-care can look different for everyone. Self-care can take the form of doing regular exercise, getting plenty of sleep or simply taking time for yourself.
Stay active
Regular exercise is important in maintaining good health, physically and mentally. While important throughout our lives, it can be easy as we age to want to stop exercising. As long as you're getting your body moving, you'll be helping yourself out.
Connect and socialize
We must remember that maintaining social connections is crucial for our mental and physical health. You can consider joining a club or sports team to make friends. You never know who you'll meet, and may find some new like-minded people.
Embrace(欣然接受) your age
Instead of fighting the natural changes that come with getting older, embrace your age and all that comes with it. And don't be afraid to try new things or take risks. It's totally fine to try to keep your skin looking healthy, but remember, everyone gets older!
A. Just make sure you are doing things you enjoy.
B. Remember, this is the time that you should do a workout.
C. Celebrate the wisdom and experience that you have gained.
D. Enough sleep is essential for overall health and well-being.
E. However, aging doesn't have to mean a decline in health or energy.
F. It's never too late to invest more time in your health and well-being.
G. As we get older, it gets easier to separate ourselves from others and stay indoors.
Have you ever wondered why it feels so satisfying to sing in the shower? You are alone. You are warm. The air is moist making your throat feel wet. You're at once relaxed and pleasantly energized by the water. Little can take you away from the simple tasks at hand. You control the speed and pitch. And the bathroom provides wonderful resonance (共鸣).
Now imagine singing while driving. You are sitting, stuck by a tight seat belt that limits airflow. Without any warm-up, you probably start right in with the first song you hear. The air is drier. And to stay awake, you may be drinking coffee, which can make you thirsty. While singing along to the radio, your voice may get lost in the noise of the song and the car.
From my personal experience, I realize the importance of not only focusing but also setting the right conditions during practice. This is why some argue against baseball players practising hitting before a game. They try hitting different types of throws, even slower ones that they wouldn't see in a real game.
To warm up, I practise deep breathing exercises and relax my tongue with "blah blah blahs." Brightening my face helps make my sound more energetic. My voice becomes richer and stronger when I practise opening up my mouth by yawning, imagining the back of my mouth expanding like a frog's. I also adjust the way I stand.
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. You are standing up straight.
C. You are loudly clearing your throat.
D. Poor training may lead to poor results.
E. The stress of driving and staying safe keeps you tense.
F. After all, an upright guitar wouldn't sound right if it was bent.
G. I always try to recreate the great feeling of singing in the shower wherever I am.
Why You Should Schedule Some "Me Time" Every Day
Most people in our culture feel the need to be going all the time. if we are not working and putting our energy into something. We feel taking time for ourselves is a waste. And to some extent, it's true—pushing yourself nonstop may bring some measure of success. However, going for long periods without time for yourself may cost you a lot in the end. Stress and the inability to enjoy a little time out have very real health and psychological effects, such as headaches, heart attacks, depression and poor concentration.
So, the biggest reason to take a little time out for yourself is to avoid these negative consequences of not doing so. More than that, "me" time can make you a better person both inside and out. Specifically, taking some "me" time can help you avoid bad mood and enable you to control your emotions. If you live with someone, like a spouse(配偶), children, or even a pet, they may not understand your need to take "me" time but they certainly will appreciate the way your mood has improved. Contrary to this, the lack of time to yourself can cause you to build up anger. .
It might seem easy to schedule a little "me" time, but often it isn't. So you must give yourself permission to take at least a half hour per day, even if it's divided, just for yourself. If you have to, set the alarm, schedule it on the calendar, or put it on your "to-do" list for the day. . It can be as simple as sitting on the deck, reading a book, and watching the sun come up with a hot cup of coffee. In addition to that, setting boundaries is important. Realize that there are limits to what you can do, and build your life around that. Also acknowledge that you need to limit the demands that other people can make on your time.
Taking a little time for yourself refreshes and re-energizes you. . You come to realize that you are important and deserve to have a little time to yourself. If you engage in something you enjoy during your time out, you also have the satisfaction of reading that book, or writing that poem about that. and don't push yourself to complete anything. Simply enjoy the time out.
A. We believe we are wasting time
B. You may need time to make preparations
C. That can harm both you and your relationships
D. Whatever you have to do, make it happen every day
E. But you should try to do something meaningful and valuable
F. It allows you to think more clearly and make better decisions
G. But be careful that you use your "me" time for leisurely activities
In celebration of the Chinese New Year, fell on Feb. 10 this year, an exhibition was held at a store in London. The showcase, running from Feb. 10 to Mar. 3, featured several female artists sharing Chinese heritage.
(organize) by Gemma Williams, author of Fashion China, the exhibition highlights the works of five artists from various parts of the world. Through their art, these talented individuals offer unique and thought-provoking perspective on femininity and Chinese identity in the modern time, titled The Woman and the Moon. These artists are from different places, with (locate) ranging from Chengdu to Taibei, San Francisco, and London. Their art (go) beyond traditional boundaries of high and low culture, as well as national and global perspectives. Taking advantage of diverse mediums, their work gains inspiration from the ordinary aspects of daily life, giving them (poet) significance. Their artistic creations (feature) female figures can be discovered in publications, connected to famous brands, showed in galleries, pushing the limits of art's engagement with society, popular culture, and fashion.
The Gallery's director, Williams, who has been actively promoting Chinese creations 2015, shared her opinion, saying, "Over this period, I (witness) a silent change of what it means to be a woman and the spaces women occupy in China today."
Hangzhou City is a charming mix of the old and the new. It was capital city of the Southern Song Dynasty in the (twelve) century. Even in those days, it was an (extreme) booming (繁荣的) urban area with a population of about one million. The West Lake Scenic Spot takes one back to ancient times with the reconstructed Leifeng Pagoda (塔). The original pagoda (build) in 975 AD. When it was destroyed, an exact replica (仿制品) appeared in its place.
(compare) with other tourist cities, Hangzhou City is well-known for its beautiful scenery. Almost everyone will be attracted the West Lake Scenic Area when visiting Hangzhou City. The West Lake Scenic Spot consists of several smaller scenic areas like Guo's Villa, Orioles Singing in the Willows, Su Causeway, Fish & Lotus Pond, etc. The lake is so vast that there are many unique is lands in (it) waters, classic Chinese bridges, flowering gardens, ancient trees and more. There are (bench) near the Broken Bridge so people can either just sit and admire the beautiful sight walk along the path. There is a ferry (摆渡) service that takes visitors all around the lake, so one can spend a wonderful day (explore) all its treasures. Visitors also choose the boat ride around the lake.
I walk into Prince's Hot Chicken, and order hot fried chicken legs. "Oh, enjoy it," says the hostess. Her reply is a commonly (hear) Southern expression.
My chicken arrives and is too hot (touch), but I don't care about it. As I take a bite, the taste hits my mouth. It's (horrible) spicy. There's sweetness before the heat hits. The taste is surprisingly amazing, as the spices dance inside my mouth. Although I'm sweating (出汗), I can't stop (eat).
How does a dish so challengingly hot become well-received? Like so many Southern foods, fried chicken has a long history. Hot chicken first appeared in the 1930s, when a man is named James Thornton Prince (begin) serving it at his BBQ Chicken Shack.
After a few years, restaurant moved close to the Ryman Auditorium, where it became popular the city's country music stars. In the following years, Prince relocated his restaurant several times around the city, eventually changing (it) name to Prince's Hot Chicken in 1980, when André Prince Jeffries, his great-niece (侄女), took over.
These days, you'll find hot chicken all over the city. I feel at home with the (taste) food as it is a symbol of the city's culture.

Life can change in the blink of an eye. While Bridgette was in the parking lot, together with her kids, a car hit them. This left them1 beneath the car. Thankfully, the driver wasn't going very fast when she hit them. In that moment, she was2 by the sun, which is the3 cause of the accident. However, as soon as she could she4 out of the car to help.
Soon, Chris Crowder, CEO of the school, joined her. Without delay, he5 a group of students to help. "It was6 ," Chris recalls. "I immediately just7 the building because I knew I had to get a lot of people to lift this car. We have about 220 domestic kids and over 300 international kids at the school. They just heard me8 . All these kids from different countries just come running out and lift it up."
Still, this wasn't an easy9 . "The car was heavy," says student Junier. "We did our best, and the moment I heard the kids crying I was like, ‘Oh, thank God, the kids are good.'"
The mother and kids were10 to the hospital. Although Bridgette suffered the most of the injuries, all three of them are expected-to make complete11 . A GoFundMe has been made to help the family with12 :"Thank you for your support of this amazing mother and her beautiful children as they13 from this tragic accident," Keaton Speaks, creator of the GoFundMe page shares. "We also have the14 husband and father, Andrew Ponson, in our prayers as he takes care of his family wholeheartedly day and night."
In addition to being grateful for Bridgette and her kids' safe rescue, the heroic students who helped are also getting their15 praise.
